Title: Question about Open Office
Post by: holtender on 04 April 2010, 23:40:57
Does anyone know if it is possible to somehow read Microsoft Office files in OpenOffice?

I have no problem reading OpenOffice files in Microsoft Office, but I cannot get it to work the other way round,

Help please.

I would expect it to be the other way round. In my experience OO does a pretty good job of reading office docs although you'll get the odd difference in the formatting.

You might have to check that you've installed conversion filters for the office documents though.

Check versions ... latest MS office (2007) files end in .docx or .xlsx etc your version of OO may not recognise those types ??

2003 MS office files ended in .doc  .xls

OpenOffice should open MS .doc files by default and one IT guru I know claims that it respects the MS spec better than MS does so they use it when an MS doc won't open in MSOffice.

As said, if you have inherited a .docx or xlsx file you may need to convert it before OO will read it.  Having said that, I have just opened a .docx with v3.1.1 of OO.  Do you have the latest?
