Title: Ebay caution
Post by: Ronald_McBurger on 10 April 2007, 08:12:45
re: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120106874773&sspagename=ADME:L:RTQ:UK:1

I emailed this guy a couple of questions and pointed out that the cambelt was 3k overdue changing as he proudly stated that it had been changed at 66k (mileage now 109k). He then edited the listing so as to conceal this and indeed imply it has recently been done with his new wording. He then sent me the following:

look wisecrack if your not having the car stop bothering me, its irrelevant to me

Just thought you guys may want to be aware of that in case you were thinking of buying it.

Being x-plod be cloth seats so he has sourced pre-facelift leather by the looks of things.

Front and rear seats are pre-facelift leather, car is facelift. So what happened to the front seat airbags?
Not aware of any way to connect old seats into later car so would guess that he has removed the airbag warning bulb and I think that means that the whole airbag and seatbelt tensioner system is inoperative.

If he knows this and is selling an unsafe car then he is breaking the law.

Mine's a 99 MINI face lift but has seats with pyrotechnics in. Are they the same (electrically) as face lift cars' seats?

Yes, though not sure if connectors the same.

Pre 98 cars had mechanical type pretensioners (and no side airbags)

i think any of us would be well within our rights to report him for his listing, explaining about his responses to our questions, the more the merrier

after all, we're only gonna be looking out for the future owner who's engine will fall apart within the next few hundred miles unless s/he gets the cambelt done him/herself upon purchase!

hundreds of miles? A bit alarmist!  :-?
The car might very well go for another good few thousand miles as it is. The belt and tensioners on mine was changed nearer 50 000 miles on mine - I just couldn't find the time to change it at exactly 40 000.

I have seen too many belts go... its not worth the risk, it only costs around £100 and 2 hours....

Mine was changed after 15k as it did not sound right (dealer fitted) for someone with less knowledge it could easily let go.

I personally will change mine every 30k now....

Not when the chains and tensioners cost the same as what i paid for that car....

My point is that Omega's which are worth far more than my Senator, for the sake of £100 it can be changed more regularly...
