I'm actually going to log off and take a break from the forum for a while I think! Following on from a few recent issues lately including:-
The attitude of a couple of longer standing members, including one who feels it's appropriate to tell another lower post count member to "p*** off" several times.
The full circle of vultures hovering over a newly ex-member who was certain of their opinion and spoke their mind.
This is first and foremost a car forum. I try my best to help out where I can but this is just not what this place should be about and quite frankly I don't need it. This is no reflection on the admins at all, it's merely a minority of members acting as if they are in charge and never wrong.
I'll still pop on and check my PM's but that's it for a while. Members such as Josh, cruisetopoland, NickV6 and MarkMV6 know how to get hold of me if you are desperate.
Be back soon hopefully!
P.S. TB I'll get the last 3 calendars and the postage receipts out to you in a jiffy bag tomorrow :y
-
Good luck mate, & thanks for your kind comments recently ....
All the best & be back soon .......
Rob

Yes, I did tell him to piss off several times, why did I though because he was calling this place rubbish. I'll refrain from saying anything like it again then as it obviously offends people.
Do come back soon though Lee the post wasn't meant to offend anyone at all but, it annoyed me the way he was saying everyone was no help after just a couple hours of waiting.
-
Sorry you feel that way on a number of levels. Firstly I have benefited from your expertise despite never having exchanged PM's or meeting face to face. That being the case so have many other members. Just one example has been using any of your posts to find the paperclip link!! Secondly that the generally friendly banter has degenerated to a point that has got to you.
Hope you are back soon

Sorry to hear this mate - always thought your comments constructive!! Good luck mate and hope you are back soon :y

A break always does good, but do not leave it too long before you return Welung! 8-) 8-) You will be missed in the meantime :( :(

I`m sorry but i gotta say that lee has been a really good friend to me since i got to know him he has been willing to drop stuff that he needs to do and assist me with the NCC-1701-A....You`ve been a solid and good person lee and this forum will be losing a sound bloke with some good knowledge...Please dont stay away too long :'( :'( P.S. i`ve got ya number and we really need to sort ya clutch out i`m free and ready to help ( I make a good cuppa ya know...and will supply the Hob Knobs...)....Bertie Basset britains greatest assest.... ;D ;D

Unfortunately, I can see several people following Lee's route ... there is a certain antagonism and a lack of "politeness" - for want of a better word - that has become prevalent. From pure spite at times to foul language ... "masked" or not ... and if you dare to disagree with a point of view ....... :(
I find I "skip" many sections/threads now simply as I'm pretty certain what will be there, whereas I used to read them all .. and if there was an "ignore" facility it would be well used by me !!!
Just my views on how the forum has changed ... and not for the better ... nowt else .. :)
-
Sad that you feel the need to step away from the forum but, that said, I know the same feeling..... :-[
The more you become involved in something that interests you then, when it changes in a way that you do not perhaps agree with, it can become a chore to continue.
As said, OOF has evolved exponentially from what it was originally perceived to be and both good and not so good is the result, IMO....
Nostalgia...... Its just not what it used to be..... ::)
Good luck, and don't be a stranger... :y

I know exactly how Lee feels. I have stayed away over the last few months since I felt the forum had become somewhat unwelcoming. Each time I have peeked back for a look see I have discovered the situation getting worse.
Yes, OOF started "life" as an Omega (not car) forum -- then it grew into a community -- something more than a car forum. When exactly this went belly up I cannot say -- but the sense of community has well and truly died . I notice that many of the earlier, active, "community minded" members have fallen silent, some have even left entirely.
I no longer have my Omega, but stayed on here for the company of friends I had made ---- this no longer seems worthwhile, so I, too, shall again fall silent.
I wish you all well in whatever you do and wherever your endeavours take you. Drive safely and may whatever you believe in bring you comfort.
I know some here will deride this last comment ... May your God go with you.

one reason i never get involved in some debates, all it does is cause ill feeling as some people cannot accept other peoples views. and all this does is divide people and that should not happen. if i gave my views on a lot of things that other people have said i would be hounded off of here. i say what i feel but on here its just not possible.

I dont think it has changed all that much to be honest.
There are bound to be things that provoke heated responses, but thats life....
To leave any forum is a personal decision, and those who go will, I am sure, be missed.
But life here will go on........

Have nearly turned my back onthe forum a few times now, after haveing a little chat with one of the ladies who left on here, it was her that convinced me to stay in a round about way. So as most of you have probably noticed I dont spend a great deal of time posting any more but at least am still here when my mood suits,
It's just a shame that there seems to be a few members that feel it's allright to go on the attack when someone is haveing a bad time with life. Sadly having a "Real" life is not that simple, and especially not that simple for some of the ladies.
Ah well, let's hope that Admin dont get pissed off and dump the forum (Because of some of the hassle ) - Then what you gonna with your spare time.

I must, I'm afraid, strongly disagree with you here ... I've been around the forum a while .. not as long as some .. but longer than many...
When I first joined there was never a need for a "profanity filter" .. or "NWS", and many wives/girlfriends posted on a regular basis.
Now we have folks deliberately masking or misspelling to get around the "profanity filter" .. we have .. and I would not normally use these words.. but I need to make the point ... "break" .. "idiot" ... people are told to "break off" on a regular basis... now some will say it is "banter" .. no it is not .. it is foul and rude language .. quite simply.
Hardly surprising many of the ladies have left ... the forum has changed .. and please, don't use the excuse that the "car world is a man's world" .... many men can express themselves fully without descending to the gutter.

I totally agree with you Entwood, in the couple of years I have been here I have seen it change a lot.
I am probably guilty of a lot of the NWS requirement, but hey, it was in big demand by mebers old and new. But as you may notice, it went through a phase, which hopefully some of the current problems will done the same.
We all suffer moods and day to day hassles, yes it greant to come here to have a "Rant", many of us have done, but tearing people appart for thier problems or oppinions is not on, a debate about them, yes, agro for it, then no.
When I started with a selection of others it was mentioned the forum was changeing then, obviously the more members the more variation there will be, but the fun seems to have dissappeared. Maybe one day it will return to a nice balance of characters and conversations. :y

Sorry mate but I fail to see anywhere in my post that I said this is a mans world..........??
As for the swearing.....yep, I agree and hadnt noticed that to be honest, but we are all adults and I dont see the problem.....
:y

I dont think he meant it like that, i think women who are into cars are in the minority on car forums, its predominantly a male domain.
Have to agree with Lizzie as well, ive been on car forums for years and am hardened to most things (swearing , rude avatars etc) but some of it goes a bit far

To be truthful the more members you get the more differing opinions you're going to get thats something that will happen on any forum. I don't think this forum has changed much apart from a few people seem to be getting very upset about what someone else says, you used to be able to give an opinion on here or say something but now it seems, you can't say any bad word or anything that doesn't agree with other people without getting shouted down for it. People keep leaving for no apparent reason or because they're offended. Now one thing is that we're all supposed to be adults on here and you're going to get differing opinions and things said that you don't like but that is life. There is absolutely no need to leave, if you want to then no problem it's your decision to do so but, as we are all adults do something else go and make a cuppa watch the tele or simply let it go over your head. The biggest problem is the fact people keep leaving and going away for a while or for a break which makes things seem a lot worse than they actually are. I also can't understand what Lee says when he says a few that think they're in charge. Everyone knows who is in charge and, personally, I don't see anyone who comes across as if they think they're in charge. (Apart from Steve obviously ;) ;))
Thats just my two pennies worth.

This forum can be a bit tough these days.
Personally, I have been accused of being a "nutjob denier", "a true little englander" and having a "blinkered outlook"...and that's just in the last 24 hours!!
I have thought about taking a break from the forum myself as I get bored of having to deal with abuse. I'm still here for now, though. :y
But, if I ever did leave, I think I would just not visit. Easiest way would be to remove OOF from my bookmarks. I'm too lazy to type in addresses! ;)
I rather think I wouldn't be missed anyway. :-/

Hope you're not away too long Lee. I may not log in very often but I read the Forum every day, mainly General Chat seeing as I don't have an Omega. So it may look as though I have left but I haven't, I just watch from the sidelines. I had the pleasure of meeting some of you at Newent 08 so I do enjoy reading what you all have to say... most of the time :)

But, if I ever did leave, I think I would just not visit. Easiest way would be to remove OOF from my bookmarks. I'm too lazy to type in addresses! ;)
I rather think I wouldn't be missed anyway. :-/
.......I'm tempted to say something.....but...... ::) ::)
So I will say something instead.
I wonder how long would go by before we noticed you hadnt posted opetimist, I reckon it would about 6? ::)

2nd & 3rd paras I agree with -- probably the best way.
I doubt the last is true though !
Anyway --- last time I looked there was a delete account button on the login page --- where has it gone ????

Hope you're not away too long Lee. I may not log in very often but I read the Forum every day, mainly General Chat seeing as I don't have an Omega. So it may look as though I have left but I haven't, I just watch from the sidelines. I had the pleasure of meeting some of you at Newent 08 so I do enjoy reading what you all have to say... most of the time :)
Oh Jo!, you are an absolute cracker! (and your mum's not a bad looker either!) ;D ;D ;) :y
I hope no offence was taken Jo? as none intended ;) Nice to meet you, so to speak :y

I speak as a relative newbie here, I really like the forum and have the utmost of respect for the longer-standing members like Lee who give up their precious time to offer advice, virtually or physically, to other members, whoever they are.
This is the first forum I ever joined, but have looked in on others for other car makes - none of them compare to this one - the swearing filters are tested to the limit and the amount of pure drivel people write is not worth the bother. And if you have a problem, forget it.
If Lee and other senior members can see standards deteriorating, then we should take note I think, these are the people that make the forum what it is, and I for one would be a lot worse off financially without all the help and advice I've received.
I started off on the wrong foot with a few people and was 'put in my place' by a couple of people, so it will happen from time to time, let's just make sure we don't lose sight of what this forum's supposed to be about...

Here, Here, I echo those sentiments, well spoken Jon. :y

I thought I was sensitive :-/ :-/
yep.. sometimes the tension goes up.. and even the debate level drops below acceptible.. but dont forget there are many members with highly varying ages, experience and different life standards (even we all drive omegas) and expectations ..(for example I envy Mr Skruntie for his monster engine cars ;D)
and of course some reflect their problems and psychological state to the forum or members more than the others..
but we are all adults (except some ;D) and can survive against some negative conditions.. and I dont believe any of the members here live in closed vessel..
I personally live as a member here and there on various forums.. and see that OOF admins try their best compared to many other forums..
and for the language used; can you force all the people around you to talk in the same style.. nope..
but if it becomes disturbing and arrogant admins are there..

Very true and wise observations, Cem. I believe there must have been something in the air over the British Isles lately, that has affected everyones perception of reality ::) :y

It seems that I have only managed 8 posts in the past 5 weeks.
Wanna know why? This part of the forum has become exceedingly boring.
Too much slagging off of others, too many private jokes, too many "conversations" from which the majority of members are necessarily excluded as they have no idea what it's all about.
We can't all get to the meets, we haven't all got the mechanical skills that are frequently taken for granted, and although we take an interest in matters automotive, we may not be able to contribute very much other than to the social pages.
I'll continue to read it, just not so often. And I'll continue to use OOF as the best source of information on my favourite car. Until said vehicle falls apart, that is... :)

It's not a case of not being able to stand the heat, my friend. This place is simply not the place it used to be. As for all being adults ... it's getting more and more like a school playground ... it's not "heat" I will be leaving behind (in the real world I have taken ( and given ) enough of that to make any row on the forum a walk in the park :-X ) it will be the kids.
Incidentallly -- several members have made the comment that we are all adults here and so should be abble to put up with insulting behaviour and gutter language --- this is an open forum, kids and wives read it. A few boobs here and there are not the problem, but some of the opinions expressed and language used is beyond the pail.

When I commented on that we're all adults, I didn't mean that we should be able to put up with insulting behaviour or gutter language, what I'm saying is, if something offends you tell people, don't leave the forum or 'have a break' it's just stupid. If you feel thats the best thing to do then do it but, it is like a kids playground oh he said this so I'm taking a break they said that so, so and so left. I mean get over it if someone leaves it's down to them and shouldn't bother anyone else but them. With over 7000 members there is bound to be things you don't like as there is in everyday life but we can't take a break from that can we? Kids and Wives may read it yes, everyone understands that but, if we can't say stuff because someone may read it then whats the point of us having a general discussion area where on a male orinentated site there is bound to be some foul language etc. If you feel so strongly that people are doing something that is bugging you tell them via PM or whatever don't leave or take a break, this does actually blow a whole load of situations up.

Just because other forums have no standards does NOT mean this forum should be the same. The whole raison d'etre of this forum being established, (before my time, but if you read the history of the forum), was because of the "behaviour" on other forums.
This forum IS different .. that's why we are here .. and I, for one, wish it to remain so.... the day it does not ....... :(

Del Boy -- I can't argue with what you have said.
Penfold -- the rubbish posted on other forums is irrelevant -- if I wanted to read that I would join the Corsa forum ( unless I had to own one first!)
The moaning is because this forum is in danger of following the likes of the Corsa forum down the same pan.
This was ( still is -- just) a great place to be, but is in danger of degenerating. Like our ancient friend, Jereboam, I have little technical expertise, and I am guessing no-one will give a rat's if I stay or if I go. Should I choose to leave it will not be a dummy spitting exercise, but a calm and long thought about action, simply because this has become somewhere I no longer wish to be.
However, I defend my right to express my concerns and try to protect what I cherish ... the old camraderie that used to exist.

TBH, I do find things sometimes get out of hand and I have been known to stop posting because of things I have read. But, I'm here because I enjoy the banter and the people I have met through this forum have, generally, been the sort of people I would befriend in the "real world"

Well to be honest I think this forum is very well spoken considering the variety of people on it and I think nothing is ever said that cant be sorted out without need for personal attacks......
And the Corsa posts arent irrelevant at all, the fact is that they disprove the theory that this forum has gone "down the pan"......
OOF is FAR FAR better language and topic wise than MANY other forums out there so why dont we all start to realise that a bit.......???????

Agreed :y :y
I've only been a member for a couple of years but have noticed a bit of a cycle in the general feeling. I have noticed some posts (and people) are a little 'less acceptable' than normal but I just ignore them if I feel that way.
It is important to remember that a lot of members here a "family" (wo)men and lots of members surf here with a young person sat on their knee :y
-
Del Boy ... to a certain extent I accept what you say ... but you quote "7000 members" ... in reality there are less than 200 (probably less than 100 ??) regular posters, and around 50 "prolific" posters .... so why do the newcomers not join in ???
Perhaps they get put off by reading a thread where 3/4 folks are having a slanging match involving "break off" "piss off" etc etc etc. You might say that those people have the right to say what they want .. but this forum is supposed to be for ALL members .. not a few private conversations.
The argument is "it's only banter" .... no it's not .. after 38 years in the military I know what banter is, likewise I know what bad language is. The major point is I also know when, and where, to use either.
And a public forum is not the place.
As others have said .. far more eloquently than I ..... the "moaning", as it has been called, is actually an attempt to save the forum from disintegrating ... we either say nowt and leave... at which point the forum will, eventually, fold .. or we speak out and try and correct things.
The Admins do a fantastic job ... but, IMHO, much of what they now have to do should not be neccesary, if people actually considered the way they behave.
Just my views, nowt else.

I realise what you are saying Penfold. Yes, OOF is far far better. But it has been far far better than it is now. But, then, I am one of those sad old goats that oft harken to the "good old days" (albeit only a year or so ago !!! )

Fair enough HC
Do we not all have to accept though, that as a public forum, all kinds of people using all kinds of language will post on here......?
And as mentioned before it isnt just members that swear on here.......!!!
Just needs putting into perspective a bit, and if you know OOF contains swearing, maybe its not a good idea to view it whilst a little un is sitting on your knee.......?

I totally accept what you say mate :y But any new member must realise that a public forum will have swearing etc, if they don't do it then thats fine but don't stay away because somebody else does it. If I swore half as much on here as I do in 'real life' I would've been out of the door years ago, I'm not a huge swearer (is that actually a word?) on here anyway but I do, do it occasionally if it offends anyone then tell me and I'll put a stop to it there and then. As you said though it is for all members so, if people on here want to swear (obviously within reason, and not overly excessive) they should be able to do so, as should members who don't like the swearing be able to stand up and say something about it.
-
Entwood sums it up very well :y
Thank you for the welcomes back (welcome backs??). I have been in purdah for the last few months (as in being shut off from the world as opposed to the more correct definition of hiding of women from the eyes of men).

"welcoming me back"

Fair enough HC
Do we not all have to accept though, that as a public forum, all kinds of people using all kinds of language will post on here......?
And as mentioned before it isnt just members that swear on here.......!!!
Just needs putting into perspective a bit, and if you know OOF contains swearing, maybe its not a good idea to view it whilst a little un is sitting on your knee.......?
:y
But ... this is the point !! Not too far in the past you could vbrowse the forum with the kids on your knee --- indeed several members kid's actually signed up! It WAS a "safe" place to visit. Yes, we "grown ups" can all ( and do) use some pretty colourful language in certain circumstances -- but we all know where to leave it out and the forum WAS a "family" forum where kids could roam.

Heh, heh --- thank you Penfold. English is my first language -- but senility often gets in the way these days ::)

I am sorry HC but I cant see this forum ever being 100% "kid friendly".......especially whilst Skruntie is posting up his "NWS"'s..........!!!!
And I have been aware in the not so distant past of Admins using langauge too that I wouldnt want my lads to read.....
So i dont let my lads on here........one is 12 and the other is 4

Like many others, I was here at the inception of this great forum. Unlike many others, I had no advice or knowledge to offer, but was 'willing' to take advice and guidance from others in order to keep my Omega going. Without this help and community spirit I would have floundered, and not been able to maintain the car, either financially through a dealer, or physically by carrying out some of the jobs myself. I have been absent of late too for various reasons, but having returned I have noticed that some things have changed. For a start, the forum is much bigger than I remember, and that will bring some of the problems mentioned above. On the whole though I still think it is a great place. I know I don't often say much, but I still need guidance and help that you just couldn't get anywhere else, so hopefully I'll be staying. It's a shame that some members feel they have to leave due to some behaviour on the forum, but their wishes have to be respected, and hopefully they can return in the not too distant future.
In the meantime I would like to wish all members (past, present and considering their options) all the very best :y

I don't believe anywhere is 100% kid friendly. Yes, there has always been a modicum of bad language ( the forum is, after all, a reflection of the real world) -- but, of late, things have got downright offensive at times. I have done some "interesting" things in my past that have exposed me to pretty impressive levels of foulness and have still been offended at some of the things going on here lately.

The use of 'language' is oft discussed on here. What is currently deemed acceptable is somewhat different to that previously accepted/tolerated and, I surmise, substantially more 'Sunday go to Church' than on, for example, BarryBpys, Corsa forums et al.
What is acceptable to one person is horrendous to another.
Admins/Mods can and do loose patience as we all can and this does reflect in post content. Sadly, this does open the gates for others.....
As always, all that is asked is that posts do not offend public decency. The addition of NWS to a header was a hard fought battle once it was realised that the flood gates to assorted 'colourfull' postings had become acceptable to the general concensus. Whether that standard was acceptable to the Old Guard is, obviously, open to discussion yet again but, personally, I fear we, as a forum for things Omega, has somewhat lost its path.
If we want to discuss general smutt, inuendo, soft porn and other near the knuckle things on what is intrinsically a car forum then, I would rather spend my time elsewhere sometimes....
A personal opinion, and not off Admin as a whole.... If WE (and that is the regal we, meaning ALL OOF members) do not get a grip on what WE want of the forum then, I fear, the gates of Hades are creaking open......
If this is considered a wee rant by some then so be it. But its not meant as one. just an observation........ :)
-
Well said Broocie :y :y
The members are (essentially) the people who have to decide what is wanted... But there are definitely people (myself included) who would reduce the time spent here if it went the way of Barryboys/Corsa forums etc
-
If the language on here is so bad (which i dont think it is at all) then is it not right for the Admins to police it and take action against repeat offenders.......??
There seem to be no formal rules on langauge on here and to an outsider there is no visible policing of it either ?

Yet!
And it takes one heckova input by mods/admins to try and stem the tide!
Perhaps if some of those members who are longer of tooth could also pitch in and say 'Woah' as and when some comments etc posted offends their sensibilities? :-/

Yet... They probably started at the top of a slippery slope too. ::)
I find the language used and "abuse" thrown at people seem to vary and, as I have already said, just spend less time here if it gets on my nerves ;)

There's a bit of blue blood in my veins -- but none, as far as I know, from King Canute --- trying to hold back the tide was beyond him, as it is me.
Anyway ---- Ovaltine calls --- time for this coffin dodger to be tucked up in his warm quilt.

Trouble is, some of the "offensive posters" just scoff if that happens and get even worse... I know, I've experienced it in the past ::)
(oh... And I'm certainly not "Long in the tooth" but do feel quite strongly about some things)
-
I have obviously missed something ::) but I agree, I feel there has been a general degeneration over recent months, many threads I just choose to keep out of. I also have to be increasingly aware that Miss Vamps often watches the forum over my shoulder and have been pleased with the NWS warnings so that I know what to open or not.
I think Entwood's comments are fair and we should all take the gypsy warning......... :)
-
Anyway, I am off now too, work at 7am.
Good discussion tonight, plenty of opinions and all said in a polite and well spirited manner.......

Just wanted to say, Lee, you will be sorely missed mate. I used and abused you for a good couple of weeks when my HG went kaputt. You went over and above the call of duty to help me out and I hope you realise just ow much I appriciated it. Top Man!

if i can find a car forum that allows bestiality pictures - that will be allowed here ? :o :o

:-/
seems odd in too many ways, a contributer such as Lee, very helpfull member is unhappy, seems unfair nobody asked exactly why? although i've obviously missed it, maybe you all know whats going on?
The guy bends over.backwards it seems to me, which reminds me i havent ordered a boody calender yet.
That aside, i'd like to add a coupke of pence worth, i find general chat irritating! i just do, its an unfair opinion obviosly, i dont udually raise the issue for that reason, its all within forum giuidelines after all, and my hard luck that i feel that way about it.
Some might say that its a bit rude to hang around on a car forum using up server space talking about polotics, global warming, knitting, cats dogs birds sheep but never contribute to any of the help sections. I see several long time members who never venture to help anyone afaict, but then get a strop on and involve themselves in argument for good measure.
I agree the forum seems...well, divided? lost? lacking direction? to me the direction is cars, and the importance they play in our daily lives, not to mention thier cost in difficult times.
With that in mind i find it odd that 8 posts on 4 pages have no replys in general help, yet we have general chat overflowing with, what i refer to as clap trap, (unfair i know, just my opinion ) a lode of winging and whining and high hoarse rubbish about whats wrong and right with the world. All fine and above board, but how does this contribute to the forums direction, or my version of the forums direction at least? maybe its not a car forum but a bitch and moan forum? (Lee's issues aside obviously)
Some might say the community is the direction, without that we have nothing.
Some hypocracy here on oof too, imo, how does it help to jump on new members for asking about another members pet hate, like cup holders for example? Danny from belgiums thread sticks in my mind there.
And "your item in the for sale section is too expensive" type posts, how incredibbly rude is that.
ok ok i'm goung off on one, basickly it seems to me, for what its worth, at the end of the day, when alls said and done, its got dark etc etc, be helpfull, obay the rules, repay the admins for the help we all have had from them, dont be a pita...but above all accept the fact its an open free to join web site, as in life we wont get on with everyone we meet, doesnt meen we should not try though.
...fair comment? or not?

I'll put my hand up for this - I'm more than happy to respond to idle banter in the GDA, but won't respond in any of the OH sections unless I can actually help or advise

could just bump them, not against forum rules i'm fairly sure...? no knowledge or experience required. Although there will be occassions when nobody knows, i'm sure.

-
I'm glad I logged off early last night. I might have been tempted to interject with a few vulgar expletives ;D
-
As a relatively new member on this forum who joined primarily because of the car information available, and the ability to contribute my small amount of specialised experience in return, I am not offended by bad language ( I am 49 yo, have worked in workshops and onsite for most of my working life, and it is heard everyday) HOWEVER.....
there is a time and place for it, minors DO log in as guests (my neighbours son loves car forums as he is car mad, and he is 11) perhaps a lot of things posted on here could be put in a section that is passworded, and can only be accessed via a PM to a moderator,(who will know if you are over 18) then you can say what you like, safe in the knowledge that anybody who CAN access that part will know ther may be profanity, NWS jokes and pictures, etc. If you don't want to see it, don't go to that part of the forum, simples. LOTs of very nice, helpful people are on this forum, and I have benefitted from their time and advice, and for that I thank them profusely. There are a few "characters" too, no names, no pack drill, but MOSTLY we share a love of a particular marque, and help others with problems on their cars in whatever way we can.
I really like this forum, and the people in it generally are decent people who just "stray from the line" a few times.
Can I respectfully suggest we are more tolerant, and perhaps think a bit more before we post, lest we alienate those that came here like me for a bit of sameness and knowledge. Mr Boss of the forum, and all the moderators don't really want to spend their time acting like teachers and headmasters telling off bad schoolchildren!!
Without prejudice and with respect to all.
Mike.

All inter4esting stuff.
Just read Chris's reply and yes I would say after coming here for Omega help they end up in GC, I must admit it's my favourite section on most days of the week. I choose what I read or/and reply to, not into politics so you will very rarely see a reply from, but is of great interest to others, one of the biggest threads is the climate one, not sure if I have posted in there yet.
When I started I was actually scared to post but that was me being shy, now look at me, this is post 19,000, what made the differemce, simples, I posted a "Hi, I'm new to the forum, and got 4 or 5 welcome messages. That was 2 years ago, All I used to do in my spare time was play Yahoo pool, amd at that I had played 10/12 thousand times. Havent played a game since.
I try to welcome all the newbies as do a dozen or so other members, I honestly think it makes a difference, it did for me.
Help sections, I flick through them every day, at times I generally feel out of my depth, but will input where I can, my knowledge of the Omega will never be as good as some members but at times it's good enough to help others.
The thing is it's a varied forum, with varied attitudes, and if you dont need help, or unable to help then what do you do, well it's obvious, you nip into general chat so the Steve the resident baracle can take the pee out of you. ::)
Lauguage, is'nt a problem if used in it's context, blatent misuse of it is becoming the down side of the forum. I swear all the time during my daily routine, but dont swear that much on here, others swear a lot, but you have different attidutes to the ones that do. 2 of these members have actually left, but I am glad to say they both came back.
The thing is, if you dont like someones attitude, and voice your opinion, it doesnt really help the situation when your attitude becomes worse that the one that is supposed to have started. :-X
-
I have been on quite a few forums in my time involving various pursuits (mostly music related), i have been called a jerk (or worse) for expressing an opinion or belief to some less enlightened members from certain corners, but OOF has been the least pretentious and rude forum i have encountered, and taking the view as a newcomer to the world of Omegas the most helpful - i have found all the members here on this forum to have been friendly to a fault and very keen to offer their advice, experience and earthy humour ::)
It would be a shame to lose any valuable experienced members over recent silly misunderstandings, this site is just too precious for that...i should knock your bloody heads together ;)

Totally agree with everything said here Chris :y
I joined the forum primarily to get help from the most knowledgeable people around for my car. I am not the most skilled mechanic and the help and support received has been priceless.
However I tend not to reply too much in GC. This is not because (as has been suggested earlier in this thread) I don't like the language. It is more because I find I am out of my depth in certain areas (politics being one) and so do not wish to be "shot down" by someone with a little more knowledge. Also I find there are a lot of private jokes and it sometimes seems a bit "cliquey". There have been times when i have made a genuine point on a thread and it has been completely ignored.
I am not moaning as I enjoy most of the forum and could not keep my car going without the help and support but I just wanted to offer my opinion why people may find they need a break or to leave.
-
Personally, as a forum user, I do think that the language is often too bad. You wouldn't swear loudly whilst talking to strangers in a room, and shouldn't here really. Its rude.
Now, I am as big an offender as anyone I guess. I work in a Blokey environment, I was brought up with 3 other brothers (all older than me). I do swear all too frequently in everyday life - a particular trait I do try hard to change, but that irrelevent here. I do suffer a short fuse, and when tempers fray, the language degenerates.
I will try to refrain in the future. :-[ :-[ :-[

I agree with you fully there Chris, and fair comment! :y :y
I for one will, and do, always give advise in the "Help" sections when I can, using my mechanically training and experience, but I am sure that there are many members on this forum who cannot do so due to their lack of knowledge and therefore are the ones that need help. ;) ;)
We can all get on together, but it is the rudeness and attitude of some that can spoil it all :'( :'(
Still a great forum though, and when you look at others you soon appreciate it even more!! 8-) 8-) 8-) ;) ;)

ok ok i'm goung off on one, basickly it seems to me, for what its worth, at the end of the day, when alls said and done, its got dark etc etc, be helpfull, obay the rules, repay the admins for the help we all have had from them, dont be a pita...but above all accept the fact its an open free to join web site, as in life we wont get on with everyone we meet, doesnt meen we should not try though.
...fair comment? or not?
That is a common feeling for most of us and can make you feel paronoid, with a feeling of "why do I bother"! But never forget Scottie that many members do read all the posts, taking the points on board, but likewise they may not wish to ever make a posted comment on here due to many and varied personal reasons. For some it is just too much of a daunting experience! ;) ;)

I personally dont offer assistance or advice as i`m not as computer or mechannically minded as some of my fellow oofer`s on here and i would not like too muck about with somebodys car if i did not fully know what i`m doing...But i will offer to help if i`m in the company of somebody like Lee or at a cambelt party cause i know that helps there if needed....Sorry but my twopennys worth.... :y

Maybe to bring this particular thread to a conclusion I would like to make the observation that this whole discussion was conducted courteously and in a friendly manner .... somewhat in the way it used to be.
Nice one, all :y

Personally, as a forum user, I do think that the language is often too bad. You wouldn't swear loudly whilst talking to strangers in a room, and shouldn't here really. Its rude.
Now, I am as big an offender as anyone I guess. I work in a Blokey environment, I was brought up with 3 other brothers (all older than me). I do swear all too frequently in everyday life - a particular trait I do try hard to change, but that irrelevent here. I do suffer a short fuse, and when tempers fray, the language degenerates.
I will try to refrain in the future. :-[ :-[ :-[
Generally i dont agree, yes some instances go too far, but we're not at Church....are we? koz i'm off if we are!
