Very interesting! ;)

A major flaw in the argument concerning the Pope not being the head of a Soveriegn State is the fact that he is, as the head of the Vatican City State!! ::) ::) ::) :D :D ;)

He said that the Vatican was declared to be a state by Benito Mussolini, but this had no standing in international law.

The Vatican is still internationally recognised as a Sovereign State ;) ;)

Is the Vatican a SOVEREIGN State ?  More a Papal State.

As for the "Roman Catholic Empire", this is actually the Holy Roman Empire, to which I believe you are referring. The Empire was formally dissolved on 6 August 1806. The only vestige is the hereditary titles granted during it's existence still exist (albeit in "honourary" form).

I don't think he'll show his face whether he fears arrest or not. There will be plenty waiting to show their displeasure.

Yes it is HC (lovely to have you back :y :y :y), having been recognised as a nation state in 1929.

It is now the World's smallest nation state, with it's own powers and security force.

http://www.un.org/apps/news/story.asp?NewsID=26384&Cr=pope&Cr1=

Note "Vatican City is the world’s smallest fully independent nation-state, with a total area of 110 acres surrounded by Rome and a population of some 800."

I do not know who was talking about the Roman Empire in this context, but certainly it can be debated by some within the history field that this, and the Roman Law that still exists in Europe can be considered as the last surviving living vestiges of the great Roman Empire!  In all other respects the Roman Empire ceased to exist in the West in around 476 AD, which by then had its capital in Ravenna,  and in the East, with its capital in Byzantium (later Constantinople), lasted until the final Roman Emperor of the East fell at Byzantium to the Turks in 1453.  ;) ;)

Anyway back to the issue of the Pope; whatever his legal status, can you imagine the political and diplomatic implications of him being arrested in Britain? ::) ::)  It cannot happen! :D :D ;)

Yes maybe Steve, but can you imagine what the outcome would be of a Protestant in Northern Ireland killing the head of the Roman Catholic Church?  Surely no-one wants a return to the days of civil war! :o :o :o  Just imagine that!!! :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

You're missing my point. I don't think any protestant would ever dare do it to make a religious point, I'm talking about a relative/friend/person who has been abused and then ignored. It's an unsavoury mess and it would only rub salt in the wounds if he starts parading around the country.
