Due to the ammount of slating and piff paff on the posts, would it be unreasonable to have some new rules for the sale section:
List all the details incl mileage cam belt and price,
a photo and brief description, then leave it as a solid item, if someone is interested, the pm you?
Its realy frustrating on here sometimes as someone wants a genuine answer, and others play hide and seek with the facts and informations etc..
I am not pointing at anyone, but thought it might be a nice refreshing idea, to see an advert without an argument, an offensive remark, or a load of stupid remarks about it looking clean, which dont help it sell.
no offence, just trying to air my views to try help the site move forward in a constructive way?
your thoughts bellow, please dont delete admin, its a pretty shared view i feel.

I think there should be a template. I know it is impossible to implement a 'mandatory' set of fields for sellers to fill in on the forum, but a Sticky Topic with a FOR SALE TEMPLATE.
A nice list of what *should* be in an advert for selling a car with all the details an Omega buyer will need. Will save all the "How much ticket is left?" questions.
A seller will enter the template thread, COPY > PASTE into their own shiny new thread and fill in all the details for their car.
Anyone trying to sell without the template, the thread gets deleted. Simples, as the Meerkats would say.

It is a fair comment IMO, these posts do tend to go off at a tangent at times, drawing the interest away from the OP's initial Ad. ;)

Hi
That sounds an eminently sensible idea, I'd go along with that.

There were cases where all sorts of random chat and critical comments were being posted on 'for sale' threads to the evident frustration of the sellers.
Maybe there should be an option where the OP can lock a thread when they have added all the information?
If someone feels that there is information missing then the OP could add it to the advert.
If someone else wants to post chat or abuse then they can post it in a different section.
-
ive seen a lot of simons sales being slated as he says its a for sale section.
as in ABS a sticky topic or for sale template should apply and know one can post replys except admin :y
-
Afraid I don't agree.
It annoys me when people just join the Forum to sell their cars etc....
This is not ebay or auto trader..... if you ain't happy advertising your items for free on here, then don't.
If you sell shit expect to get some sort of negative response.
Most people do put a picture of their car or whatever they are selling.
If they have not cleaned it, then someone stating the obvious may well help them with a sale.
-
I agree with Darth... although, a little more structure to the initial "for sale post" would be a good idea.. Some sort of template sounds good...
-
I think there should be more info than is often posted.
However, on the other hand it drives me mad when people say "id buy it if it were a saloon", or "i prefer them in red".
Hey, it's an Estate or it's actually blue guys - so why make the comments.
IMHO
-
There was a bit of a discussion on this subject today at the Essex meet. Seems a lot of people get annoyed by people starting longwinded rants about peoples cars and adverts etc when they have no interest in buying the car. I mentioned that iirc H21 did a bit of banging heads on that very matter a while back and that I thought things had improved somewhat.
Looks like I may have spoken too soon. ::) Maybe he should have banged them a bit harder. ;)

Agreed, I particularly like those posts, along with the "If only you were closer" ones........

so, a basic template, with all the information, and leave it at that, with a pic, it gets it seen, and oof members can view them and see if they are interested then i guess.
ITs just frustrating to see adverts without prices and pictures then get told to make an offer, or guess what its worth, and loads of people talking about ah, id have had that if it was an estate etc..
it will be mixed opinions, but its very much like a playground sometimes when it all kicks off, i stay out of it as best i can, i use the main media for my advertising, but as others on here will testify, i reduce the price for OOF members and have supplied a few happy members on here with cut price cars to help them out as enthusiasts.
without the advert on here they wouldnt have got the deal. and someone would have bought the car and put 6 dogs in the boot and thats the end of that clean estate!
Its good to ask questions, but why not pm the buyer? or limit the replies to constructive ones.
anyhow, up to the owners of the site, and will always be varied opinions with 7000 members or whatever someone said it was, but at least it would make it look more profesional, than an outsider looking at the sale section and seeing a massive thread of spam, arguments and nonsense.
as i say up to the people who run the site, but it seems to let this fascinating site down a lot of the time, thie site is full of handy stuff and we all value it.
-
No. No. No. I much prefer the threads where everyone joins in and rips the seller to bits. You wouldn't deprive an old man of his entertainment, would you?

Your distaste for the general car buying public(including oof members) is evident in most of your comments. You want to have a brief ad then straight to pm and so avoid answering investigative questions in public on a forum .You regard yourself as doing a favour to oof buyers for `allowing` them the privilege of buying a car from you at a discount! I think i might be sick, you are in it for the money,FULL STOP,and therein lies the motivation for your posts on this thread.
The evidence on this forum shows you to be rude and contemptuous to folk unless there is a sniff of pound notes coming your way.
The moderators recently have `policed` the for sale section and made it quite clear to members not to post on a vehicle for sale unless interested in buying. The section doesn`t need anything else imho.
I certainly dont think it needs suggestions from a `car trader` on how to appear professional. As you well know Omegas are not an easy car to find buyers for . The `trade` in general don`t want to know them unless they are for nowt especially `ex plod`.For a trader to discover a forum of omega fans such as this and be able to advertise for free is quite amazing and you ought to be more than thankful that this is still the case without resorting to posts on the subject which i feel are patronising and condescending to members, this one anyway.

Noticed that myself a few times, kinda put me off wanting to buy owt from him, plus he doesn't reply to PM's.
Well, not to me anyway..........
But back to topic:
I'm trying to be impartial about this, but have to agree with Guncharmer about a trader finding a free outlet to advertise his wares - not many forums would allow that, there would be some kind of fee involved - but as Simon said, he does offer a discount to OOF members.
The "If it was a saloon" or "That's too much are you having a laugh?" type comments do not help either the thread or the forum IMHO.
Things tend to kick off and it's more work for the admins, surely?
I think VXON have it right - only replies to the thread if interested in what is for sale and silly, pointless comments are not allowed.
That's what the PM system is for. :y
-
Moved to the general discussion area as thats what its for, not actually offering something for sale in the sales section..... ;)

Simon - I see the merits and demerits of what you propose. Ultimately, however, its upto the seller how he/she constructs their add. OOF is not E-bay or Autotrader. Plus, its free and targets a customer base that are actually interested in the car for sale....
It annoys me when people just join the Forum to sell their cars etc....

DLK - I agree. It is frustrating to see folks who post up items for sale - be they cars or parts - and contribute approximately the square root of naff all to the forum otherwise. Nothing even in the general discussion area or - the initial concept of OOF - help maintaining/repairing their vehicles when folks request advice in the proper section. Sad that OOF is used simply as a free sales ground for folks who have an interest in a particular marque of car...
No. No. No. I much prefer the threads where everyone joins in and rips the seller to bits. You wouldn't deprive an old man of his entertainment, would you?
;D Hence the reason for me banging on about linking an add worthy of comment back into the general discussion area!
A well structured add can turn a pigs ear into a silk purse on the face of it but its still a pigs ear beneath, however fluent, eloquent or glossy the prose advertising it may be......

h21, but as admins, is charging for trade adverts something that you have considered....?

Thought of and disregarded. Its not an avenue we wish to go down. When are you 'trade'? Sell one/two/more cars a year? Sales section is a royal PITA as it stands without making it more difficult than it already is.
I know that a substantial percentage of the admin/mod team would happily see it binned, according to previous discussions....

It is the Admins forum, not ours, and I am sure you know it is your right to do with the forum as you see fit.

I have mentioned a template as an idea in the past, as some members put what they think at the time and then add as the thread warms up.
I personally like the info that no one ever puts, like the number of previous keepers brands of tyres (I hate buying cars with 4 differnt makes of tyres on - Personal choice I know) but if you are on a buget and then you have to lay out for tyres etc, Josh I believe even tells us the tread drpth on the sale of some of his cars - which to me wins him an extra point on a sale
I also agree with DLK - OOF members generally look out for each other, if the see something on a car, or wrong with a car, then why not mention it. allthough the discussion of a car needs taking into general discusion as allready mentioned by Admin
Top and bottom of it is the more info you give the faster the car sells, the better detail you give the further people travel.

I bought my current Omega from Simon.
If there wasn't a 'cars for sale' section on the forum then I wouldn't be driving an Omega now.

my trade rarely sees omegas, maybe one a month, paying for trade ads is no problem, as for contributing to the site, regularly answer peoples help requests and send them free / or p+p price parts.
cant say fairer than that.
the general idea of a template would help.
as it was seing peaches post where someone was realy rude that made me think, why dont you guys just have a template.
It would help you to keep the replies down and help you get the result you are after.
as for pound notes, ask josh, the omegas we get shot of, rarely turn any profit, but as an interest site for omegas, why not give you all first dibs at them.
I have suplied 5 omegas to club members over the past year, they all got extras, like free delivery, a free satnav, or something.
Makes no ods if i advertise on here or not, but in general, as the post suggested, would be great if peoples adds contained more info.
that was all, it wasnt a patronising attempt, or a request for someone to have a go at me, when it was peaches post that received all the rude comments on it that sparked this idea!

I find your views interesesting, you mention a templat as other have but when you actually advertise a car on here (Like the one above) you seem a little short and suggest other sites where the pictures are listed.
I have been involved in the motor trade and I have to say then if you are moaming that you very rarely make a profit on an Omega then why bother buying them. this 3.2 estate for example. starts at 2695 but now its 1995 or 2195 with MOT Oil change and service. So thats what, £40 MOT, £10/12 Vx oil and filter, olus air and pollen filters, plugs and possibly pads/
So you suddenly decide to drop £700 off it, the service etc covers itself for parts and labour so. So had the car of sold origininally are you saying you would have made a nice healthy £500+ proffit on the estate.
We used to but little toyota's and colts like the mirage or colt mit=rage turbo, allways ran then for a day or two to fault find, allways did a servie and mot if less than 6 months left. Plus a full valet and even offered a warrany on them, saying that anyone who dealt with knew how we detailed the sale of a car and we had a good repution for sales. Also valeted for a majority of the trade and had a four post ramp to do service work, contacts for paint work, weding and electrical work to a degree we carried out ourselves. £500 outlay (Total) would easily return 750/800 all day long. 1000 motor would return 1500/1600.
Some of out trade was ex police with the traders that came to us, ok, holes to fill in, new roof linings in some, but the profit was allways there.
Basically Simon, I hate to say it, but I dont believe a trader buys any car and then says he naver makes a profit on a particular type/model, experiance tells him not to carry on doing it. We also know the valur of the Omega range and what it costs to do the work required, also aware that £1.40 a litre wont help private or trade sell a V6 motor.
as for contributing to the site, regularly answer peoples help requests and send them free / or p+p price parts.
cant say fairer than that.
I think most of us contribute to the site one way or another. Respect on the freebies, but thats your call for you and the others that choose to do it.
People on here will pay a fair price for a fair car, no one is knocking your trade Simon, not even me as we know you are in it to make a living. But to come on here and start a thread regards advertising and details then take the laxy way out then sorry matey, hance I wrote this post.

Agreed. Who's going to go trawling Ebay for pictures? The car's advertised here and the pictures should be here IMHO, and the seller should be willing to help members requesting such info - if they want to give the right impression. ;)

i find that just a little unfair. For someone like me who doesnt really know alot on the working of cars in general, let alone a certain car, how am i ment to contribute on how to fix something or improve something if the next post is someone who knows a great amount on the said car and shoots me down? I, for example, am learning at the moment. I have learnt how to do a hell of alot more things not just to me omega, but alot of cars now as a result of this forum... guides i have read, advise i have been given. The reason i dont post helpful stuff is because i dont know a great deal like some and dont particularly like being made to look a fool, so i just dont bother. I feel im ok with audio things but then we have a Audio Tech on here anyway, im fluent with PC's but then again so ar ethe admins... i think the only thing i am fairly good at which i havnt seen anyone else mention yet is graphics (PS etc)... but this is a car forum, not a GFX site.
Not having ago at u H, just find the comment i little on fair on those that genuinely dont know the answers

I think you are putting yourself down there matey. You have a 330+ post count which straight away means you are contributing a hell of a lot more than others that never even say hello.
being a member here gets you access to all parts of the forum that members see, Admin have a hidden section for them selves. 1 post. just a hello for example gets you the chance to PM some one to buy parts or a car. As forums go that's fantastic, Admin refuse to let advertising take over and the forum is free, all they ask is that a few simple rules are followed. Those rules dont include replying in a technical manor, they dont force us to take part in General Chat.
All that happens here is that Admin hope that you join and take part on any level of the "Community" I am not that smart on the repairs, but the bits I have learnt I now feel in a place to pass on the advice that helped meeven if it only how to reset the climate or windows ECU.
There are 1000's of members yet to make thier 1st post, yourself, you have contributed 334 times. :y :y :y

I think the OP didn't necessarily mean contribute in the sense of offering help and knowledge to other members. More in terms of participating in the community here as opposed to posting only to buy and sell, if you follow?
It's more a case that the "for sale" sections are seen as a tool for those who are active members of this community, and by participating in this and other discussions, you are. :y
This is the reason we have a post count limit to post items for sale. We don't want people descending on the site purely to use it as free advertising.
