Title: YOU JUST .....WORDS FAIL ME......
Post by: Sixstring on 12 April 2010, 10:16:15
Went out sunday to help an old (disabled) buddy to change his oil on his new (x reg) car that he bought to replace his aging cavalier. The car was reasonable nick, and on first appearance, had been looked after.
John has only one leg good, and can't get under a car to change the oil and filter, so its my pleasure to do this for him on a regular basis (and his wife makes fantastic cakes and biscuits too, but that has nothing to do with it, honest) but this time i had to just stand back for a bit.

The oil was like golden syrup, but black, and had a gritty consistancy to it, the air filter was black, the plugs were stubby on the electrodes, and the best part was to come.
After using a breaker bar on the 34mm drain bolt and good old plus gas, the oil filter was written on by the mechanic who changed the oil and filter last. (good practice) The black marker pen on the white oil filter read:

32945 miles 16/5/02..............02????
the car has now done 91356 miles, by the way.

Needless to say it was refilled with cheap oil and a good flusher, with a new filter, and will be changed again in a month.

'Kin Ell!.................does that count as "car abuse"??

Holy crap!

If you have service stamps for that time, I'd be off to the Garage / Trading standards.

Mind you, guess it was the last owner, so nowt you can do....

And another good reason NOT to trust your car to a garage  :y

Forgot to mention...the only reason he bought the car, was because he saw it was a "one owner from new" and "excellant condition"  car, and being disabled, wanted a car that had been looked after!!! (can only get a small car on motability, and needs an estate for his dogs, so takes an allowance instead)
oh, and says he will probably join the forum too!!!

Good thing is that he has you to look after him with his new motor from now on.   :y

The Consul has a tiny drip from the sump. Probably came with it from new. Seem to remember our dads always had a tray or absorbent on the garage floor, it was a the way of things then. Engines were slow & noisy but much less fragile than today.
I reckon the oil leak was like a gauge...if it stops dripping put some more in...easy really!!! :y

It just goes to show that pulling the dipstick when buying a car is worth doing at the very least.  Given the reputation of second-hand car sales over several decades I really am not impressed that someone got caught in this way.  It usually only costs a beer to get somone to go with you. :-[

In his defence, it is probably a bit hard considering he is in a wheelchair to check some things, and he is also an incredibly proud person who has to be pushed to accept help in any way. (did offer to come with him to buy it, but he said he could manage to buy a car on his own, he didn't need his hand holding)
lovely bloke though.....

(Incidentally, it appears there is an advantage for him to take an allowance rather than a motability car, did ask him)
