Title: Not much of a welcome home
Post by: Nickbat on 19 April 2010, 17:41:14
Read the blogger's comments then watch the BBC clip at the bottom.

I can just imagine what I would have said to one of those in the hi-viz jackets after 72 hours travelling with kids.  >:( ::)

I thought one of the points of joining the E.U. was the abolition of border controls??

For E.U citizens .... naturally you have to prove you are one before passing through ::)

Border control (or whatever they are called these days) just can't win ..... first they have to keep everyone out .. now they have to let everyone in !!!!

It seems many have missed the point of this thread, which is that all the pax had been processed before leaving France and here they were, very late at night, exhausted and liable to miss connections, and yet the high viz jobs-worths of the Border Agency wanted to go through the full process again. They were finally allowed to merely hold up their passports, but only after they threatened to riot.

In essence, then, the Border Agency was showing no flexibility or compassion - it just wanted to show its muscle.

Of course .. if half a dozen illegal immigrants had walked through at the same time and then raped someone ... you would accept that as OK wouldn't you ???

And you wouldn't criticise the Border Agency for not doing their job.....

After all .. immigration rules only need to be applied when they don't inconvenience anyone ..

They would have been sussed on the other side of the channel. This is a one-off situation and shows the need for flexibility. That is my whole gripe about jobs-worths. It's not about the work that they do, but the fact that they only know the rule book and work to it like automatons. The ability to be apply the rules according to the prevailing situation is common sense, IMHO.
