Title: Budget Motorbike Helmet Cam
Post by: tunnie on 19 April 2010, 22:13:03
Always like idea of a helmet camera for the bike, after watching things like Long Way Around, fancied doing my own. (both the trip and mounting a camera!) But with proper helmet camera systems costing £500+ tight wad student here did it on the bodge!

Video taken with this £12.99 camera from eBay (which some mugs are paying £45 for on a UK auction! I bought from Hong Kong just had to wait a month...)

Its 720p, frame rate is low at just 30fps, but looks ok on video! Takes MicroSD card up to 16Gb

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250587031263

Of course in true tunnie style, i got the gaffer tape out:

Results are not too bad, angle is a tad wrong, faces screen too much, but for £12.99 can't complain too much!

You might want to mute the sound and its just wind noise (oh and i know i need to update time stamp)

I know you wanted a helmet cam, but wouldn't your camera be better sited behind your screen? You could still use gaffer tape.  ;)  ;)

True, but its going to be very useful, would be good attached to my boots for snowboarding.

50 mph on Farthinghoe to Middleton bit now as well  :(

thought about it there, going to try it, trouble is its going to vibrate a lot. Helmet / body takes that away, screen flaps about a bit at high speed  ::)

Vibrations will be small, but will make image blurry i think.  Needs to be high up too, and the top part of the screen moves a bit (i fitted pattern one which is taller)

Its almost right, don't think its ever going to be as good as professional systems.

Mines fitted looking THROUGH the screen, minimal wind noise, and vibration, but sometimes a bit "flarey" when in bright sunshine.

Can't knock it for the money, re-chargeable battery built in! Work colleague mentioned they are so cheap, i should get a second and also mount that low down, by the front folks and do some cut to shots in the corners  :)

Looks good, part of the problem with my camera is the angle, it can't go directly on top of the helmet.

Its hard to tell from the photo, but it looks like the HDVR 720 can be taken out of the head set? Shame you can't just buy the camera on its own

Just don't look down at the speedo when you are wearing it, there has been more than one documented case where the police have used helmet cam evidence to support a speeding procsecution!!

(i.e  we can see he was doing over 100 on the cam, therefore no defence possible.....)

I fancy fitting a cam in the Mig, with the ammount of knobs heads on the roads these days would be nice to have some video evidnce.

Its 720p resolution, in the states thats classed as HD  :o

Its also been reduced slightly in quality for you tube!

Time wise its about 1Gb per 30 mins or so, i've not fiddled with other modes yet  :-/  - Can read cards up to 8Gb, although not sure if the battery is up to that

I have purchased one to mount on the front bogie of the loco......to allow me to do (following editing) a Ruddington to Loughborough in 60 seconds film.

Vibration should not be an issue as the 113 tons damps things quite well!

Sorry Tunnie, just checked the listing for your camera - it's not 720p. The spec is 720x480 so the 720 refers to the horizontal resolution, not the vertical.

Still looks a good deal though, just thinking about how I could mount one on my bike.... something involving the mirror mount possibly...

Thanks for correction  :y

Considering mirror mount too, maybe on the hand guard, or possibly on the one of the shocks  :-/

Exactly my thinking too, well not 500 tons, but a stone at 90mph could do some serious damage, but at that price does not matter!
Title: Re: Budget Motorbike Helmet Cam

90?!?!?! Only on a track or private road, of course!  :D

I'm thinking some strong cord through the 'hanging ring' at the top, then looped around the handlebar or mirror mount - as a safety measure. Not sure about that if mounting it on the fork etc. might get tangled in the wheel.

I was also thinking if it is possible to make up some sort of clear perspex shield to fit just in front of the camera. This would not only help protect against stones but would also stop squished fly build-up in the lens - a very nasty affliction  :o
