I do not know about the drink, or the aliens, but he is still a Professor until death having earned his 'rank' within his academic profession.

He has though retired as the Lucasian Professor at Cambridge University. ;)

If aliens ever come to earth, there's a good chance they would look like Stephen Hawking. ;D

in an infinite universe, it's impossible that there is no other intelligent life out there  :o

It's incredibly arrogant to think we are the only intelligent life ;)

Alien Sex

A Martian couple and an Earthling couple have met and are talking about all sorts of things. Finally, the subject of sex comes up. "Just how do you guys do it?" asked the Earthling. "Pretty much the way you do," responded the Martian. Discussion ensues and finally the couples decide to swap partners for the night and experience one another. The female Earthling and the male Martian go off to a bedroom where the Martian strips. He's got only a teeny, weeny member; very short and very narrow. "What can you do with THAT!?" exclaims the woman. "Why?" he asked, "What's the matter?" "Well," she replied, "it's nowhere near long enough. It'll never reach!" "No problem," he said and proceeded to slap his forehead with his palm. With each slap of his forehead, his member grew until it was quite impressively long. "Well," she said. "That's quite impressive, but it's still pretty narrow." "No problem," he said again and started pulling his ears. With each pull his member grew wider and wider until the entire measurement was extremely exciting to the woman. "Wow!" she exclaimed as they fell into bed and made mad, passionate love. The next day the couples rejoined their normal partners and went off together. As they walked along the Earthling male said, "Well, was it any good?" "I hate to say it," she said, "but it was really wonderful. How about you?" "Well," he said, "It was the weirdest thing. She kept slapping me on the forehead and pulling my ears all night."

If the universe is infinate (yet growing, can't get my head around that), then it stands to reason that there are infinate other inhabited planets, infinately those with less intelligence than our world (though possibly not Bletchley), and infinately more with more intelligent life.

How can they say it's growing, did they find the end/edge in the 1st place to create a referance point.

Currently the best instrument we have is the hubble telescope, so all thay can prove is what they can see.  But remeber this, it's what they can see, not what they have proven, as what they see was explained by thier own scientists, it has yet to be proven from air/gas/dust samples etc.

Yes they still searching the universe for answers, but they are still searching the depths of the sea and still finding new creatures the deeper they go.

That's my point though, it isn't infinite. If it was, for example, them the night sky would be lit completely by an infinite number of stars in the same way as you wouldn't be able to see through a dense wood for all the tree trunks. Learnt that in a-level physics

I accept why the universe is infinate, but growing (just!), but not for your arguement that I think is flawed - we can only see a tiny, tiny proportion of the know stars out there at night.  I guess, due to lack of light polution around where I live, I'm lucky enough to see more than a lot of people can, but still only the tiniest proportion of known stars

when they check the distances of some galaxies  with hubble,  light spectrum shifts to red that means its rapidly moving away.. :y

Yes, I can see your point, and I'm no scientist, but if there were an infinite number of stars out there, they would fill every gap, no matter how far away they were, and the night sky would be completely filled. Believe me, we asked all the same questions as you and it could be that my physics teacher could be wrong, but he learnt it from somewhere, and it follows some sort of logic I think.
It is believed that the universe is expanding away from a single point, the point at which the 'big bang' happened, and that one day, all the matter in the universe will start to slow down and attract by gravity, causing a 'big crunch'. What happens then, ask Steven Hawking  ;D

you're right - the universe is expanding at the speed of light (which always boggles my brain!!....think about that for a second  :o :o) and theres no definitive answer to whether its finite or infinite, but with regards to alien life - the universe is so large(156billion light years by my calculations)*, with so many stars that to all intents and purposes it may as well be infinite....or something  :-/  ;D :y

*when i say my calculations - i'm lying  :y

No Smegmatt, the honour of being called a "professor" is due to the distinction that you gain within academia, recognised by your fellow peers, in merit of your learning and teachings, with your written work published widely with recognition by those within your discipline. The professors I know have all produced multiple publications in both book form and 'papers' to various academic journals.

All that cannot be taken away by retirement, and many professors actually carry in a semi-retired capacity as they cannot stay away from their cherished field of study! ::) :D :D ;)

AS big as the universe is,who knows we could be 'Alone', and theres no reason to suppose that if others do exist, they are more advanced than we are,for all we know we could be the most advanced life in the Universe-dunno if thats a good thing or not.
Any thing much more advanced doesnt neccesarily have to be 'Benevolent'.

Some cosmic version of the Vikings or the Huns (as in Attilla) would be a tad scary--anyone watched Chronicles of Riddick?
Anyway, we have Will Smith and Vin Deisel to sort 'em out.

"There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.

There is another theory which states that this has already happened."

I think I must've read all 5 books in the (increasingly inaccurately named) trilogy at least 3 times (and the first three about 10!!)

I think he's summed up the problem perfectly here: Chapter 19 of The Restaurant.......

"It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination."

I knew none of you existed!!  ;D ;D
