Seem to be able to maintain temperature with:
New rad
Drilled stat
Diesel cap from scrappy
V6 exapnsion bottle
Very weak antifreeze mix
Still losing a small amount of coolant from cap, so maybe cap is knackered? I do not think the petrol ones which were fitted when I got it, and the QH one, are any good at all. Even with Omegatoy's cap we lost a bit of coolant, though it was driven harder than I have so far. We did think it may be leaking from the 'bodge' I'd done to block off the extra hole on the v6 bottle, so Omegatoy did a bit job of blocking. Defo still coming from cap though.
Plans for tomorrow are to put the good stat back it, after testing it somehow (put in a pan of boiling water??), and get antifreeze back to 50:50.

As for the cap, it should have the pressure rating stamped on it... and they are built to release over-pressure, so either the cap is not the right one for the car (you say you tried a 'desiel' one and it was no better?), or the pressure goes up to high i.e. overheating?

None of the 3 caps state pressure. However, the diesel ones are a different design...
The diesel one I'd written off for other reasons before I did the rad....

Its always possible that the sensor is fubar, and we did this when playing around with it...

I wonder if it had some kind of 'tuning box' POS wired in . . .

AFAIK that sensor loom does not disconnect and is fixed into the loom at the other end...

Good point. Maybe one of those stupid coolant sensor resistor things?

No worries, if we broke it when we worked on it, well, we learn by our mistakes. It is tight around there with intake on. Though Theolodian has a good point as well :-/

Ermm, i cut it very close to the end of the loom (at engine temp sensor end) It should all be still entact, allthough the sensor loom is 'moulded' into the main loom and cannot be removed.... (as far as i know)
There seams to be a main loom in a box running the length of the block (simialar to the one of the front of my 2.2 with the clip on top)
Might be worth removing that and see how it connects, as for the scrappy TD it should be sill there, just cut off very close to the loom connector...

Before I do a 30m round trip, is there enough wire left on connectot to solder to? It is one piece of wire back to ECU (well, within 4" of ECU ;))

ermmm i doubt it, i cut the connector off too thinking about it, so who sod knows were it would be in the bay :-[
The connector was in quite a bad state anyway... covered in oil.
The only thing that would be left is the bare wire that would have gone to the connector, which then goes into the main loom.
Its not worth risking the scappy one i think, need to fix your one!

Not quite sure of access to that cut wire but it looks easily solderable to me. I would tidy up the hole in the rubber boot (ie make it bigger) then solder one end of a patch wire to the cut end, slide over some heatshrink then solder onto the other end.

The access is nigh on impossible with the intake on. The 6 intake to cylinder head gaskets have been on order for way over a week now, still no idea of when they will be in.
How do you rate my chances of removing intake, and being able to reuse gaskets. Omegatoy thinks unlikely...

Do you reckon you would be able to get soldering iron under there and do temp fix until the gaskets turn up and I can do properly?

Last time i did an serious soldering i was at School! :-[
I got the beefy wrench down there, so i suspect I could get that gas powered iron down...
Not sure on how well i could strip the 2 wires, and join them up though. I can get one hand down there but never too, so i can't see how I could strip the wire? :-/

just been looking at the photo again, i could probably get a little bit on the wire thats poking out, but it looks the other end is going to be very short! :-/

Tested stat in a pan of boiling water. It does open. Not sure how hot water was in pan, as I didn't have thermometer. When I first did it, it was probably close to boiling, so I let the water cool for a couple of mins and tested again, still opens. So I suspect stat is fine :)
Just going to chuck it on now...

I was hoping to pop by yours on Monday afternoon / evening m8, for a little advice on my Senny... so if u do have any i can bring that back for TB.
