Can anyone tell me what the law is on taking a car for Mot It has no MOT, tax (currently SORN) and no insurance . As I understand it the car maybe taken to be MOTed as long as it is prebooked and can be driven back home again .
Can anyone offer any advice please :y

It still needs to be insured if your driving it to the MOT station, I have just looked into this very subject for a car I bought that wasn't taxed ot MOT'd.

catch 22. need a mot for insurance(not valid), cant tax without mot.pre booked, station covers.

pre booked should be fine, as mentioned you can't get the insurance or tax to make it legal without MOT

Get them to pick the car up on trade plates, they will oblidge if you are not too far away.

Of course you can, never heard of day insurance?
You're exempt from tax and MOT rules if the car is booked in at a test centre and you are taking it to or driving it from said appointment. But you need insurance for any vehicle on the road.

You need insurance, that is mandatory and there is no way around it.
Tax and a valid RFL disc are not required if you are driving to the MOT station, hence why I don't need to use my trade plates to take an untaxed vehicle for MOT.
MOT itself - The onus is on the driver to prove that you are going for an MOT. A letter from the garage confirming your appointment, or their phone number which can be given to anyone having cause to challenge you over the vehicles MOT status.

Ringing the insurance company will be the better bet, although Zok is correct in that the law makes it quite clear a motor vehicle can be driven to & from a pre-booked MOT test providing the driver has a license and insurance for the vehicle.
The only instance where a vehicle may not be driven back home after the test is if a red failure is issued.

Tunnie, you dont need an MOT to insure a car, anyone can insure a car. I have a car parked up that is SORN, no MOT and no RFL but it is fully insured. (Waste of £200 for a year - but still fully insured)

Absolutely correct, which is why when you see the reality plod shows on TV they can't invoke s165 if they simply catch someone with an expired MOT or RFL (the worst they can do is warn you that you will be reported).
The OP is still liable for ensuring the vehicle is roadworthy (ie, good tyres, lights work, etc) as they would be seperate offences even if on the way to the MOT.

Interesting you mention bald tyres. In the 70's my Dad had to fetch a Works Director home from manchester Airport, he was flying in from a meeting in Barbados, Pops had this guys car, which in those days was a Dolomite Sprint 1850, he went to Manchester that evening over woodhead, to find the flight had not set off, any way, to cut a long story short my Dad did 3 trips from Rotherham to MA that night after being messed about (each trip breaking a new PBT). When the guy finally landed he decided to drive as he had to go else where and did a stint on the M62 at dare I say it (125mph)
Pops then brought the car home as he was completely done in and complaining the car wasnt handling right.
He went into work and they found all 4 tryres were down to the metal belting, and the rubber just peeled off to noth edges of the tyres with just a bit of rubber making contact to the road. If the plod had of caught him they would have thrown the book at him. As there was no reason that could be given to have it on the road. (And yes he was the sort of person had he of not been so tired and peed off that he would never have risked his licence as he was a transport manager and with out it non of the companies vechicles could have operated)

I was kinda thinking it was a joke based on his avatar, etc...but then I wasn't so sure because the text was supersize bold and there was no emoticon at the end.
