Title: Plumbing help...
Post by: Markjay on 14 April 2007, 20:45:55
Did some plumbing today, mainly removed the bent pipes under the sinks and gave them a good clean. I know, should have done the rusty PAS pipe (I bought the Hammerite for it), but I spent all of last weekend on the car so...  :(

After putting back all the various plastic pipes etc, one of them seem to have dampness around the seal when the water is running... no matter how many times I took it apart, aligned it,and retightened, it still gets damp. Since i don't have any experience with this sort of stuff, before I change all the rubber seals, is it one of those things that are normal and will resolve themselves (please say so...), or if it is wet it will always be wet unless I change the rubber seal....?

My alternative idea is to put some black Vx sealant on the thread, great RTV stuff...

Thank you in advance.

Is it the dreaded plastic pipe and push fit connectors...

Or brass conex fittings?  Either way it won't resolve itself  :(

It's damp in spot (1), in the gap that appears between the two large 'nuts' after the top one is tightened up wards, so i suspect rubber seal (1) to be the problem...  :(

Best to wrap some PTFE around the threads first and see if that stops it.  If not I'd replace the connector/pipe rather that just the rubber, they're fairly cheap and then you can guarantee a good seal.

If you go to one of the above make sure you take the pipe with you.  Unfortunately they like to stock new stupid size connectors that wont fit existing plumbing.  You may have to wait until you can get to Plumb Centre etc.  Hopefully, with that U bend being a common item it'll fit ok.  :-/

Thanks - will give it a go (I actually have a roll of PTFE left over from a previous botched plumbing exercise). And also thanks for the help offer... much appreciated.

I'd buy another trap, that seal rarely fails though :-/ it should be inch and a half ;), just make sure your sink waste isnt leaking and running down onto the trap  :-?
