What are the rules on tyres?
Specifically... does a certain size or rating, have to be fitted, depending on the spec of the car?
EG... if my Elite, (which has poor tyres) magically grew a set of 15" CDX wheels with brand new H rated tyres, would it pass a test? ;)
Also, what are the rules about mix and matching widths of tyre by 10mm... I presume that it's OK as long as the same widths are on the same axles? Eg, 195mm on the back, 185mm on the front.
'I have of course (genuinelly) got new rubber on order, but I won't get it in time for the MOT.. slightly bad planning on my part! Opinions welcome...

Larger wheel upgrades pass mot so why not smaller. 15"'s are fitted to some Omega's so should be ok - but no smaller!
If you blew a tyre, Kwik Fit would not insist you replace the other side as well if it was still legal. They would try, but could only advise so I think tread depth ok too.

Tyres sizes can be any mix and match as long they are the same on both axles, BMW's, Jags, Astons, Supercars run different sizes all the time. Wheels can be different sizes front to back aswell - some TVR's came standard this way so you could have 14" steelies on the front and 22" chrome spinners on the back and it wouldn't matter. The main thing is that the tyre tread is good. They may pick up on that you only have 'H' rated tyres when you should really have 'V' or higher on a car like that but hey should'nt fail you for that.

I believe they can fail if the tyre is inappropriate.
Additionally, your insurance is not valid with wrong tyres are on...

Hiyall. Tyres for MOT have to be the same on the axle.
Different front or back okay, 15" rear 16" front okay so long as axles are the same Also profile and size has to be the same. i.e n/s front has to match o/s front etc.... 225/65 r15 and 255/55 r15 would fail.
Speed rating not applicable to class 4 only trucks/vans etc. so you could have T rated (113 mph I believe) and would pass mot. You may get an advise for V and H rated on the same axle but not a fail. Speed limit in UK only 70 etc.......
The confussion comes when you start playing around with crossplies and radials, but as Omegas are on radials no probs....

Fine for MOT, check with your insurance though..

I can change for a "Z" rated tyre for not much more ... I'm getting them from a trade supplier :)

W is 'up to 167mph' whereas Z (which predated the W rating) is 'over 150mph'

Unless it's a Cadillac Catera (http://www.familycar.com/RoadTests/CadillacCatera/) when apparently H rated 'tires' are good enough.
