Am I right in thinking that the stronger the signal shown on your computer then the faster the speed of your internet connection? In my case up to a theoretical max of 3.6M
I don't want to waste time and money trying to improve the strength of signal (e.g. by moving my PC onto the roof) if it won't improve things. I currently get 1.3 M on a good day and down to 53.6 on bad days.

i think so (though i may be wrong). i would have said its no different than mobiles phones... depending on where u are in relation to the mast in terms of distance and also things like weather may effect it, also the age old sharing of connections... like i said i could be wrong, im so good on mobile internet

Signal strength is a factor but not the only one.
Signal quality comes into it - whether the signal is suffering from multipath, for example.
In addition, the wireless network is a contended medium meaning that the theoretical maximum speed assumes that your mobile is allocated all the resources it can take. In practice, some will be allocated to other users of the local cell site(s) so you are competing with your neighbours for bandwidth, I'm afraid. ;)
Getting a better signal from an external antenna will only help, but it's impossible to day how much until you're tried it, I'm afraid.
