Any of you long enough of tooth to remember the legal sticky thread we used to have?
Any of you sick to the back teeth of politiking and would like to (not) see or hear any more than they have to?
A POSSIBLE solution to Gen Diss getting swamped with political bits and bobs, given the current over run of the Election, is the creation of the above on a temp/trial basis.
Will add a poll and let it run for a few days to get a general feeling before the Admin Team decide whether its a good idea - or simply a corner for ignoring!
-
Poll added, results hidden until the end, just like the real thing.... ;D
-
Voted......... :y
I voted last week as well.... :D :D :D
-
what if there's no clear majority for any option? ::) ;D
-
what if there's no clear majority for any option? ::) ;D
Then the committee of presiding officers decide. ;D
ps - we have not said precisely when the poll closes either!! ;D
-
As per usual, I voted in the poll and then read the thread, could I please have my 1st vote deleted so I can vote again please, pretty please. :y

You couldn't do that last week, could ya!
Deleted, only because us presiding officer types can see who votes what before close of poll anyhow.... ;D :y
-
Can we have a 2nd poll with proportional representation for the Limpdem supporters ? :y :D ;D ;D
Dont really see the point tbh. There is a thread which is about 35 pages long about buses. I am not remotely interested in buses so I have never looked at the thread. ;)

personally, i think we should be banned from posting in general crap, until at least one post placed in one of the help sections per day, per member. :-X

I don't need to post in the help section everday, unless I was to drive the Mig everyday...... ::) ::) ::)

He drinks whisky, will that do. He's allways in spirit whilst on the OOF.
Does it mean I have to post in the help sections as well. ::) :-X

on a general level, no. I dont mean this on a personal basis. My point, generally, not enough help going on imo. And if not able to help, then looking to learn at least.
Fair comment? or not?
and i dont mean you personaly of course. There are no rules to it obviously, just alot of "I" "Me" and "mine" going on lately. Or is it just "me"

i don't know a thing about cars tho :o ;D
yet you have in excess of 2000 posts on a car forum. :-/
oh alright, a bit strong, but you see my point?

I think it is about the taking part that matters. If you took away general chat then no one would bother hanging arround on the forum as they do.
There are 1000's of members who came here to get advice, but maybe have never even said hello.
You could penalize members that dont drive miggys like Mike, or peeps like Banjax who know nothing about cars, but the thing is they/we turn up most days for the banter, why, because they like.
If there were any rules on posting then all it would do is cause friction. ::)

needs a better balance if we're honest with ourselves.

The one thing it could do with these days imo is more fun.It used to be a real good laugh on here most nights but that ( and most of the people who usually instigated it) is quite rare these days. :(
-
would more interaction in other sections help? bring more members in "from the cold" perhaps?
-
or maybe they are hacked off with all the polotics threads? :-?
-
People will post where they feel most comfortable.
A question wanting help very rarely goes without a reply, even in the early hours when I think newbies feel comfortable they are amazed why someone replies to thier question.
I wasnt too sure of the suffle round when the forum was reorganised, but now I would hate it to go back to less sections.
I hvae no interest in the bus thread, I hate politics, but if they were reduced to one thread like the buses I might pop in for the odd nosey. but if you condence that thread, then do you do that with other threads.
If members took over, then there would be a politics group, and joke section, Tunnie would want his own sky section, ladies would want thier bit.
We all have to face it, the forum is growing rapidly, Admin have thier hands full as it is. There are the Omega and non omega help sections and every thing else lands in General chat.
There are a hell of a lot of clever people on here, fortuneately we all want to talk about different things.

Well said that man.
Who knows the reasons why that is?
The forum is primarily about Omegas, and helping with those problems. However, when this place was conceived, we wanted to retain a 'community spirit' that we were denied at our old home.
To me, personally, much of that seems to have disappeared of late. Maybe its because we get bogged down with loads of politics threads and other links for online media resources? Maybe its the tired old jokes that constantly get posted? Maybe, more worryingly, is that OOF is splitting into 2 - those that hang around help sections and those that hang around chat sections?
What is the solution? We used to run a weekly/fortnightly 'pub quiz', but only ever a handful of people took part, and it was the same people always volunteering to set the questions. Yet the quiz works well the meets (assuming the quiz master is sober enough to read the questions ::)).
I think Hotel21 may be on to something here, as if you have no interest in politics, and you've seen all the same old jokes before, and find utube pretty boring, then you will open General Chat and be swamped with 2 or 3 pages of stuff that doesn't interest you, and not return in there.
Was splitting Car chat and General chat was a bad move? It was done because car chat (remember, we are a car forum) was getting lost in general chat.
-
maybe the 'long' thread idea could work well.
Been on some forums with very few active topics, but the ones that are active, are all very long, does make it easy to ignore what you dont want to see, be it political / environmental / semi naked ladies.
Keeps those topics together for those that want them, and makes it much easier for everyone else to see other interesting stuff.

A valid point worthy of some consideration, IMHO.
We are a diverse cross-section of people brought together by a car. Hence, although some of us have common interests outside motoring (beer, buses, trains, politics, perving on youtube, etc. ;)), what we mainly have in common is an interest in cars.
We moved our main area common interest out of the chat section into its' own. Has it left the chat section a little barren, only to be in-filled by old jokes and political ranting?

And done in an effort to 'fix' something we/I thought was 'broken' - the fun element of the forum. In hindsight, possibly a bad idea, and I think correctly summed up by your good self as to why...

You missed out playing with explosive substances ::)
Which reminds me, I have 2 airbags sat on the patio :-X

In a certain part of the Kingdom the mantra 'Vote Early - Vote Often' was used with great success on many occasions.
I have attempted to invoke that very spirit on this poll but sadly have been unsuccessful. :-/ :-/

yep - i totally see your point :y
but i came across OOF when i was buying my first (of two) omegas and the help and advice i got was very welcome and encouraging and it was a good place to hang out and spout opinions, theres no way i could tell any of the experts anything about fixing a car - so why would i fill up the help section with useless advice when others far more qualified than me are there? ;)
-
Brilliant Idea I am well fed up of seeing all the political 'dangle berries' on here all the time :-[
-
politics is subject of the moment, next week, next month whatever, another subject will come along. some will be interested and comment, others wont. on a personal note, some subjects drive me mad so i choose not to comment.still interested to read now and again what others have to say on the subject and regardless of the section its in.
-
I have thought about this today and have changed my mind. It seems that a lot people might be avoiding general discussion because of all the political threads. So iit might be worth making it a sticky (for a while at least) to see if it enlivens the discussion area again.

If politics is a bit complicated for you love, Rick Astley has got a new single out, go listen.

We need a politics sticky, a bus sticky, a climate change sticky, a jokes sticky........................not.

Seem to remember this, and being all for it at the time, on the basis that it would encourage threads on other makes in the face of comments such as "its an omega forum, for omegas" implying talk of other car makes was somehow not allowed.
However now i agree with you both, and may well have split the forum. Shame. Maybe general and car chat should be merge again (but still call it general car chat imo, but thats just me of course ;D)

I used to be able to escape from the drivel at one time on here, but no more :(
Why not Pete? :-/ :-/
All you need to do is ignore those threads as I know a number do.
In real life, and on the OOF, all I hear is the complaint we are all being over regulated in a nanny state situation.
Now in the virtual world of the OOF there are some calling for yet more regulation!! :o :o :o :o :o
Please give it a rest and allow individual members, who are meant to be adults, the freedom to decide what they see to be read, and what they write to be read, without fear or favour (with the acceptance of course of the sites rules regarding decency and politeness!!) ;) ;)

Sorry Lizzie but I agree that there is a tonne of Drivel on here. I personally don't want to read it. It did used to be a fanastic place for a laugh, perhaps you weren't a member then so wont know. ;)
-
I can't see what the problem is. Surely there's no compulsion to read a thread you're not interested in? I read (and sometimes participate in) the chat forums, but a few months ago, it got so boring, I gave up. Then something went wrong with the car, so I came back, got some technical answers - my airco is now working again, and the parts only cost £9. I found some interesting chat threads, especially the politics ones. So it's all fine as far as I'm concerned. :) :) :)
My only gripe is that I don't understand all the in jokes - who's this bloke Omo? :)
-
Good grief - he's stalking me... :(
-
I can see the problem being that when you weed out the politics, global warming, soft porn and youtube threads there won't be a lot left.

Yes Daz I agree, as that was still the case when I first joined. :y :y
However, the size of the OOF has increased dramatically since those times and from what I have seen the intimacy has been lost, with the 'in jokes' for instance, that used to be made between a regular group of members, now capable of either making individuals laugh, or equally causing offence and / or misunderstanding. Let's face it the The OOF has just become sooooo large and for many no doubt impersonal.
No doubt also that there are many members who would love to participate in the banter but feel too intimidated to do so.
How the OOF over comes the hurdles I for one cannot say :( :(

Not really - we're still around the 60-70 concurrent users in the evening, as we have been for ages.
Certainly chat has over the past few months been little more than links to utube clips, newspaper articles, very tired jokes and obviously in the last month or so, non stop politics.

When i had a TV i was bombarded with MP's this & MP's that, i got sick of it all. I used to come on here to escape it all. I don't give a monkie's arse what they do, because there's not much i can do about it.
All's changed on here now :( I know i don't have to read the threads, but curiosity gets the better of me ;D

Interesting results thus far..... :o
There is a clear trend into one particular camp.....
Hhmmm... :-X

I've had a punt. It's all over the media in every form, telly, radio, press, web like a frickin' rash. As Pip did i voted without reading thoroughly. One side of me is sick to the back teeth of it but those who have an interest should be entitled to discuss. As said we have a choice to engage or ignore, so could you delete my votre too please B,? (Sorry)
The only opinion i do have on the whole debacle are the fact many did'nt get to vote...it might have swung the majority...but we were left with a hung parliament resulting in the underdog (who by the way leads a party that was made up of two underdogs) leading the two main parties a merry chase for a coalition. Labour & Conservative have been in & out of power for decades & cocked it up over & over blaming anyone they can so why vote for any of them? They're ALL non starters. Abolish the lot of them, dissolve parliament, make them get real jobs & start afresh.

This thread has been an interesting read.
I think one issue I notice is the unwillingness of some members to post anything other than stuff in general chat..
I knew absoulety nothing about how to fix cars when I joined, I still don't know loads. But I've learnt.
I can think of a handful of members who only ever post in general discussion, and the same few members join that discussion...and that's it.
I think, with the exception of newbies...everyone knows what the paperclip or pedal trick test is...so why not point it out to newbies who aren't sure what's wrong with their car etc etc.
To those members who don't help out...have a go, you'll soon learn things.
I have watched the current political event unfold, but don't feel the need to endlessly post about it, with another 3 or 4 people posting a reply and argue a bit about their political views, and who they'd support or how unfair everything is.
I agree with a point made earlier by chrisgixer...join in the help sections, even take a picture of your car and put it in the gallery section if you don't want to post in the help sections...get out there and interact, attend meets.
I have never had an issue with any member on this forum...ever, and I can say that about 6 or 7 members I would consider good friends, and trust imensly.
That's through everyone helping each other out, that wasn't through us discussing our political views, or our favourits music, which we may do when we meet in the 'real world' but not necessarily do on here.
I think if the few members who only ever post in gen discussion made a little effort to explore the rest of the forum...there would be no issues at all. If those members helped other members out, no one would care they only post about politics in gen chat etc. That would be a side issue, and forgotten.
When you are on a forum, your posts define you...if you are rude, people think you're a rude person in real life, because they haven't had the opportunity to meet you. In 'real life', you would try and help out fellow Omega owners, fellow humans.
Welung666 (Lee) had a good idea a while ago, an OOF mascot that could travel around...something like that I think would invigorate OOF a bit.
-
I am one of those who regularily posts on political threads. I have also tried when possible to help in the general help section when possible. I do try to bear in mind that a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing, and there are some very clever technical people on OOF. So my ability to help is a bit limited. It is a fact though that some OOF members have no knowledge of mechanics and some have absolutely no interest either. If the admins dont want members who arent interested in mechanical things I think they should make it clear and ask the relevant people to leave.
Otherwise, the rest of the membership should accept that you dont need to be a petrolhead or budding mechanic to be a member.
It is imo a car forum, but it is also a lot more than that.

You make a fair point. I spend most of my time messing around in general chat & don't usually have anything constructive to say. I have no idea how to repair my Omega & neither am i interested in learning to do so as i have friends who do a better job than i ever could. That said despite my current status i've been a member since within the first year of the forum starting, have attended & hosted meets at my own humble home as i've spent time at others.
I also cook a pretty fair curry...We're all good at something.

Read this with some interest....
I have no real political knowledge, but feel I may learn something from others who do by reading the threads. I do know a bit about car electrics, and help when I can definately say something that is correct and may fix a problem (but have been proved wrong a couple of times because of omega's quirks). I respect the right of anybody to have an opinion, even though I may not agree with it, and read threads that I have no real interest in, because on occasion, I have developed an interest in it later. Many people here seem to have their "cliques" and that is fine......but are always polite, and helpful to me should I ask for help. In retrospect, we all appear to be relatively tolerant of members that are a bit rude in all senses of the word, and there are also some whose sense of humour is just ultra-dry.
Is this not just the diversity of all life itself??? if we were all the same, there would be no interest or friendliness towards any man/woman?
I enjoy OOF and like the diversity of individuals here. If politics is "your bag" then fine. Yes, this is by definition a "car" forum, but we have a community too.
Thanks for reading my humble opinion.
Mike.

Read this with some interest....
I have no real political knowledge, but feel I may learn something from others who do by reading the threads. I think you put that well Mike, very measured and well reasoned - splendid 8-) :y

Thats the intention, but feel something is broken with it, and the fun aspect has diminished....
Which is why I changed my mind. People could avoid the political stuff if they wanted to, but I know for a fact that some long standing members are so fed up with seeing so much off it that they rarely go near general discussion anymore. So short of creating a new section for politics/ global warming etc I think it could be made a sticky for possibly a 3 month trial period ? and maybe join gen. dis. and car chat back together to have general chat again. It may or may not help but there is only one way to find out. :-/

TOP TIP: Never, ever rebuild an engine in the nuddy. Too many dangly bits to confuse.

Welung666 (Lee) had a good idea a while ago, an OOF mascot that could travel around...something like that I think would invigorate OOF a bit.
well said ,my opinion too :y

I'm sooooo glad I've got a life ;D ;D ;D
Ahh, Steve, you make me laugh, you do ;D ;D ;D
With respect to making general discussion and general car chat into one section again and having a sticky thread for this and a sticky thread for that, I think it's fine as it is. I'm a firm believer in keeping it simple and I like the format as it is. I occasionally look in on a Pug forum and there must be (hang on, I'll look) 27 forum sections, and it's far too much.
The labelling of political threads as has been done recently is a big help to those of us that are not interested, especially since the build-up to the election. Yes, it's important, but some of us just don't know enough about it to be able to comment. I have no problem with those that do want to though
There are a few 'in jokes' on here which may be a bit bemusing to an irregular user, but these are mainly on General Discussion to be fair, I think the help sections are fantastic.
Banter? That's up to you originals to keep up, the rest of us will join in ;D ;D ;D
Please don't be too negative about this place, it's a brilliant forum full of fantastic people who are all a little bit different to each other, which makes it all the more interesting :y :y
