Title: Number Plates
Post by: Peachy on 16 May 2010, 22:37:48
When I was selling Peachy I needed new number plates, so off I go to Halfrauds to get a set made, and they asked me for £29.95, I politley refused, and went to a couple local Places, all wanted around £20 - £25. I ended up buying on the bay for 99p each, all legal and general as they say. 99p each plus postage, just under a tenner, but still a lot cheaper than anywhere local. I was happy.

Can't be.

Number plate suppliers are required by law to see an original form of ID (normally, but not exclusively, the V5 registration document).

Sorry.  :(

I had the authorisation form here from DVLA, but they asked for nothing. The plates have thier postcode on and BS Marks, so must be legal, unless you know differently.

"Remember, you should only use a registered number plate supplier. They will need to see original documents before they can supply you with new number plates."

those selling number plates need to meet certain requirements.

http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/+/www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/BuyingAndSellingAVehicle/PersonalisedRegAndNumberPlates/DG_4022573

the spacing, letter font, and all the rest are probably are ok.
price wise this is how they can do it cheaper.

Th whole point to the change in the law (in 1998) was to crack down on those using false plates. If web suppliers (who are likely to unregistered and thus acting outside the law) are prepared to supply plates without proof of identity, it rather defeats the object.  >:(

another example of those in power not thinking legislation thru and assuming all will play by the rules. :(

I agree Nick, but it saved me a fair few quid so what can I say?
There is no way that anyone can justify £30 for a set of plates, profit margin on them must be huge.

I've bought quite a few number plates off ebay-they may not be legal but there is never a problem at MOT time and two for a tenner is great.

It's daft how new laws come out and all of a sudden shops take advanatge with prices.

Did hear some where though the rules dont apply for making plates in scotland, might be wrong on this.

Chris Page agin has been closed for a while. He did have a shop selling pine furniture once.

If the plates were bought from Ireland it's legal.

That's where I got mine from, not ebay though.
All legal fonts and spacing, just wanted a Vx logo on the side.

Also got some cheapo one's from ebay, based in Scotland.

Neither asked for proof of ownership.

thankfully, now that "new labour" has bitten the dust, we should see the last of this sort of nonsense.

it was sort of "think of an idea for something you'd like to stop - rush out poor legislation that controls everyone apart from the ones that you really want to stop. Cost everyone a lot of money. increase the state's database of individuals information"

My corsa came with illegal plates on, wrong font, wrong spacing, and one of the previous owners names written below the reg.  I argued with the woman who sold it to me - it added to the points I pulled the car up on to knock the price down, knowing that £30 would be the cost to replace.
Then, I went on eBay and ordered a set for a tenner.  Thing is, if your car is ancient (like my Corsa) then how does anyone know when they were replaced?  As long as there's a BS (british standard, not bull...t)number (forget which one) then I don't think there's any bother.

It's a pet hate of mine.  I don't understand why the ANPR cameras aren't dishing out hundreds of fines a day.  It's not difficult - right font, right spacing.  It's patently obvious when it's wrong.  It's the law.  99% of people manage, yet I could be well into double figures of 'offenders' every day if I bothered to count them.

..... It's not difficult - right font,  ......

But if you have a car from berfore AB12 CDE format they were a different font, a font that you can't strictly get done anymore.  :-?

Learn something new every day :)

Still, there's a ridiculous number of people running about with swirly fonts, or deliberately squared numbers to make them look like letters etc.

Anyway, I'll climb off the soapbox - especially since what I thought I knew I don't  :-[
