Title: fly your flag if you dare
Post by: mantagte on 21 May 2010, 21:39:02
son and his mates were driving to cambridge this afternoon when they were pulled over by pc plod and his merry men
four coppers two cars
told the lads to remove the england flags from the car
my son asked why
copper said it may offend someone
my son and his mates (all squaddies) started to kick off about this and were told to shut up and remove the flags or get arrested under section 5 public order
could not believe it when he phoned and told me

going to get some big stickers made up and plaster the white estate with then lets see who i can offend

There's a story going round on Facebook that the police have been "banning" England flags, etc. and it turns out to be a hoax. So there is much merriment in certain camps along the lines of "No, the police are NOT banning flags, so stop being a racist xenophobe and stirring up trouble".

Until your post, I was prepared to accept that the police were not prohibiting people from flying the flag and that it was, indeed, a BNP-style wind-up.

Your post has cast doubt on my views.  :o :o

What a load of horsesheet.....

So the Police ARE racist against their own people then cos I have never seen a copper telling a Jamaican to take their flag down, and there are hundreds of cars driving around Nottingham with Jamaican flags..........

Careful. Careful.  There might be other people living there as well. ;D

I am looking for the same.

Unusual to have "four coppers two cars" involved for a standard 'stop'(??).  In Kent many cars are going around with English flags with the police taking no action, as it should be.  Why different elsewhere?

If this story is true, and not a "squaddies" windup (and before anyone starts one of my sons was in the Royal Engineers and I know how they act in a group of 'mates in arms'), then a complaint should be made to the authorities, with the local press also informed! ;) ;)

taking a 'sitting on the fence' type view of that originally posted, I suspect a very distilled version of events rather than what actually took place.

No offence intended so, please, do not take any.   :y

I suspect that stop was more than likely for another reason and thereafter, things escalated somewhat.  After going about their business, the young gents currently out of uniform then distilled the stop into what is now presented, taking a rose tinted viewpoint that may well be more acceptable to others.....

*caveat*
I was not there but base my conclusion on more years than I care to remember as a paid servant of Her Maj as an upholder of the law....   :)

Zulu

The Police in question quoted an act, meaning they had more than likely been pre-briefed to keep a look out for flags, so if these particular officers were trained to be racist then yes, that goes for any other officer instructed the same way........

An for them NOT to be deemed racist by me, they need to be seen to be applying the law to ALL members of society, not just English people......

Please remind me what country I am in.......oh yes.............ENGLAND..........why the hell cant we fly our flag........????

Its horseshit.

I am seeing a lot on England flags in this area, mostly on cars but on many houses. Little Miss Vamps has a full size flag dangling outside her bedroom window, and her friend over the road has England bunting across his bedroom window... :y

Thanks for clearing up the first part M, can I assume from that, officers not so briefed, could not be branded racist?

On your second point surely it must be reasonable to assume that the police act against many members of the community even though you don't witness their actions directly.  Judging by the number of complaints I see, a sizeable number of the minority communities (black, Muslim, Irish, eastern European and so on) consider the action taken by the police against them as being racially motivated.

As a matter of fact I do agree with you on your last point.  I'm certainly disappointed by way in which the police have been politicised over the last few years, especially at the hands of the former Labour administration.

I'm disappointed by the attempt to have this country policed 'on the cheap' by the instigation of a policy to have a greater number of civilian personnel involved in policing (PCSO's an so on).

I'm disappointed by the risk adverse inclination of many police officers - as directed by their respective command structures and the apparent ease with which many officers accept this.

Lastly, I'm disappointed by the generalisation of certain aspects of police activity made by many members of the public.  Police officers have a very difficult job to do and need the support of the public.  Yes, by ill-conceived and unprofessional conduct many officers have opened themselves to justified criticism but I would suggest that without officers doing this thankless job day in and day out, this country would be impossible to live in.

Why ???  S. 5 Public Order is a cover all Act and I imagine every officer quotes it dozens of  times a shift.

Apart from that I will not comment as I was not a witness to any proceedings and am therefore not qualified to do so.

To sum up then, if a Police Officer is sufficiently knowlegeable to quote chapter and verse of the legislation they are enforcing, thats a bad thing as they have been 'pre briefed' - or is that taught at training school, per se??

Let me put it this way: If I got stopped by PC plod for flying an ENGLAND FLAG ( our country) I would deck the blank, and suffer the consequences of our illogical, and stupid legal system. I'd probably get a couple of years (welll 3 months considering the half they automatically take off , plus time served on remand, plus tagging), yet we can't boot out terrorists in case they may get tortured if we deport them. HELLO >:( send the muslim blanks that want to commit attrocities in our country to my house, and they'll  find out what torture is. ;) ;)Why the blank do we pander to these bloody minorities, and the liberals that constantly moan about Human Rights ETC. If they don't like how the majority feel then BLANK OFF >:( >:(  :D

I am fed up with not being allowed to do this or do that cos it might offend someone......this is our country.......!!!

i'm liberal (aren't we all?), and me nor anyone i know takes offence at the georges cross flag flying - in fact I bought a Mars Bar from Sainsburys the other day with a St Georges cross wrapper.....next month with the World Cup, I'd imagine they'll be everywhere so good luck enforcing that  :y

in truth there can't be a law against flying an english flag in the UK, so this seems like an over zealous cop or superiors missinterpreting the law (there is no law afaik) ;)

Stories like this make my blood boil.

A couple of months ago it was the Iraqi elections and Iraqis living in this country were allowed to vote at specially designated centres (one f which was about a mile from my house). Thousands and thousands of Iraqis turned up to vote and caused utter chaos for two days by parking where they felt like and causing major traffic delays. There was a massive police presence (obviously paid for by the taxpayer) and almost every car had at least one Iraqi flag on it (some had massive flags on the bonnet which could easily have been blown onto the windscreen causing an accident) and the police did nothing.

So when someone tells me I can't fly the england flag on my own car or outside my own home then I'm sorry but they will be told politely where they can shove it >:( >:( >:( >:(

I do have to say the Union flag is much better than a red cross white flag or a blue flag with a white cross
