Title: Scott456
Post by: Lizzie_Zoom on 23 May 2010, 18:56:08
Hi Scott!

Please note the Forum rules on welcoming Newbies:

"Can you please keep this to threads that were started in the last 7 days.  This reduces the possibility of new threads getting quickly sent to 2nd page by older threads.

This is in our forum rules, please take the time to read and digest them. They are posted at the top of every section".

You are currently welcoming members who joined back in April (the 17th with one!) and early May!

Please refrain from doing so as now we have old members at the top of the first page, and genuine newbies are now pages down! ::) ::) ::) ::)

Thank you for your co-operation ;) ;).

I don't go in the newbie section anymore but that's the one thing that annoys the hell out of me... just to boost a post count. Send 'em back to zero or -100  >:( >:(

That was the whole purpose of my visits, I remember feeling so welcome when I first joined and thought it was nice to continue. I don't bother anymore, in fact today was the first time I'd looked at the newbies section in about 5 weeks!  :o

Likewise ..... I fear that many newbies don't become regular posters and we remain the few "Optimists sad ....pathetic.....reprobates" because they are not made to feel welcome.

His postcount is now back to something more approaching what it should be, and in accordance with the forum guidelines.

And I sent a PM regarding this, rather than posting in open forum.

Ayone else sent the newbie a friendly personal message, rather than simply throwing them to the wolves in the Gen Diss area??

Well the guidelines are there in every section, and there is a sticky at the top of the newbie section. Doesn't ignoring all those opportunities to buff up on the guidelines before, in effect, spamming, warrant a little 'poking of fun'?
Title: Re: Scott456

Poking fun at someone is most probably quite fine if those involved know each other, either personally or via their on-line persona.

For a newbie poster who, perhaps, is a real complete newbie with no/limited knowledge of web based forums (fora??) to be subject to the (admittedly, probably good natured) posts on this thread is perhaps at best, overly blunt and at worst, intimidating.  The latter tends to perhaps reinforce the frame of mind that sometimes OOF can be cliquey?

No probs with friendly jibes, just reinforcing the point that one persons fun poking is anothers rudeness....   ;)

is it not a case of when all else fails ...... read the instructions?

In Latin, forum is a neuter noun; in its plural form, it is correct to say fora

The only 'fun poked' in this instance is me mentioning the members arrival at 50 posts and commenting on the for sale section. The reason being that most people who fill a couple of pages in the newbie section are deliberately boosting their post count for the sole purpose of circumventing the guidelines on selling.

I'll admit 100% to being blunt, that's just me. Re-reading my replies I don't believe I have been intimidating in the slightest.

I think I'll just retire myself to the help sections as I did a month or so ago.  :-X

Lee - not saying you, personally, are intimidating by your responses.  However, the very nature of this thread in total, as added to by yourself and others, can potentially wrongly appear to be.   :y

Not meaning to stir a hornets nest in my reply, just trying to keep an open perspective on things, as any admin should on any assorted fora....   :)

I welcome as many as i can- why? Not to boost my post count as other's seem to think, but to make the "New Members" feel welcome.
I remember my first day & it was quite daunting, i was made welcome by quite a few long standing members (including Laidback) which made all the difference.
I really don't care what others think/say & i'll carry on welcoming as many as i can :)

I agree that this issue should NOT have been raised in General Discussion. :(

In such situations PM the poster or, better still, PM a Mod.  :y

Thanks Russ  :-[ :y

B, I know it wasn't aimed primarily at me and as a Mod elsewhere I know it can be very difficult and time consuming dealing with things like this happening. I've been harrassed enough over complaining about multiple welcomers to stop posting in the newbie section. As I've already said, I was made extremely welcome when I joined. How would a newbie feel to post and receive no 'welcomes'? I know I'd feel unwelcome! All this from the very rare occasion of a new member trying to circumvent the rules.

EDIT: As for not PM'ing the member... They have obviously read enough of the guidelines to work out they need 50 posts to sell a car etc., but not enough to know that welcoming 2 full pages of new members to get their post count up is OK? Blatant circumvention so why not go public? Do they not think 50 welcomes would go by un-noticed?

In hindsight, fair comment.  But no sign of a car sales thread, or did I miss it??

Kevin and I deleted the excess posts which caused the stooshie and I sent a PM explaining the why and why nots.  Angle I was on about in my initial response was asking if anyone else took the moments effort to also send a PM before the person was villified on open forum.

I've said my bit.  Nowt else to add, so will leave it be....   :-X

hi peeps, first of all to you welung666 you can check the forsale section theres nothing there of mine and when and if i sell my omega it will be in lots of classifieds not just oof,hotel21 my post count is 50 but if you check properly you will see ive given the best advice i can to a number of people in general help and if i was boosting my post count to sell something i would have made fifty posts in my first day not over eight like i have done.lizziezoom i can only appologise when i log in and go to new members it shows a simble of new on the post, clearly i misread this and welcomed a lot of members who have been members for a while, i have probably made the same mistake in general help aswell. so from now on i will check the date not just the post. sorry and thankyou

I thought the time where people cared about post counts had long been dead and buried.

This site is well moderated, the 50/250 rule for selling or wanting something is counter productive.  It just causes people to post a load of crap in order to post in the Sale/Wanted areas (I'm not referring to this particular instance).

It's easier to closely moderate two areas for unsavoury/fake threads than it is the whole forum.

The postcount thing actually works, despite being so draconian.  In an ideal world, it would be unnecessary, but we don't live in such a rose-tinted world.

Esp for selling parts, 250 posts means that potential buyers should have got some kind of feel for the seller to be able to make a better judgement about dealing with a complete stranger.  Surely we cannot moderate who sells what based on OOF Staffs' view on sellers?  It has to be the buyer's decision to trade with a seller  :-/

I am just sorry you got so embroiled in such an extended debate, which wasn't necessary.  I will not comment too much further other than to say I value welcoming new members, and when yet again I go to welcome the "latest" member and find it is one who joined on the 17th April it is very frustrating and totally unfair to genuine "newbies" who may then not get the welcome they deserve! ::) ::)

However I am pleased you now understand and hope you enjoy being on here with us all 8-) 8-) 8-) :D :D :D ;)

So no one should take responsibility for something happening within "our" community Forum on a hot afternoon, with few members and no moderators online at the time? :-/ :-/  Sorry Richie but my background and training means I take responsibility on board and take the action I think is appropiate at  the time ;)

I didn't want to go into further details, but a PM was sent to a moderator when one came online, but I thought I would politely quickly inform the member of what he was doing so that all the newbies section didn't massively end up back to front, upside down, with as it was a "newbie" welcomed on 17th April was already at the top of page 1.

With hindsight, yes, perhaps I should have PM'd the member involved! :-[ :-[ :-[  But I was acting in the best interests of the Forum and genuine newbies who should be at the top of page 1 to be welcomed!  A function, perhaps unlike some others, I believe is important! ;) ;)

too many wannabe admins poking there nose in where it dont belong. theres an alert moderator button if someone is abusing the rules or offending someone, i always thought this is why forums had admins.

not having a go at you personally lizzie, but that is  the case on here, i love the site and the people on here, i can take whatever is thrown at me as a joke, thats what its all about, having fun and being educated by some of the eggheads on here. there is no other forum as good as this one but im finding myself on here less and less now. people are offended either too easily or cause they have nothing better to do than moan. i wont put jokes up no more either cause they are old or they may offend the feeble. damn shame.

sorry for being grumpy, mother went in hosp today and im a bit ratty    :(

Scott -- you will find that everyone here is OK -- generally a great bunch.  Every now and again, as with all families, we have a dummy spitting session. We all get carried away ( me included ) but we make up ( or leave)  ::)

Jump on in and enjoy. As for peeps being accused of upping their post counts by posting drivel I can only plead guilty. As of now I have just over 6000 posts, of those 6000+ have been complete drivel, 1 has been genuinely helpful advice and the rest only slightly drivellous  :D :D

Oh, I've obviously managed to miss the fun and games again.

Sounds like Scott456 made a mistake (and probably didn't read the rules ;D), but has realised the transgression once prompted :y

Do we need to do it to the nth degree, come on, lets everyone have some fun and enjoyment from the site :y
