Yes finally the very last scheduled service trains using the old SR 'slam door' stock has run between Brockenhurst and Lymington, Hampshire.
Withdrawn from all other services, but retained by South West Trains on this branch line, these trains were the last of the stock that we in the south used to know so fondly in our teens, when travelling up to London for pleasure or work, then finally 35 years later hated for their drafty, battered, and unfriendly condition!

I saw them in 2008 - got some video material somewhere.
Stayed near Lymington - very nice twon

on our route the new Trains (Desiro class 44 and 45 built by Siemens) are far more reliable than the old - particularly like the Air Conditioning. Much better journey for me these days into Waterloo
-
That's because there's gonna be a whole load of new build trains for the rest of the country - WCML have had Virgin Voyager and Pendolino trains for summat like 6 years now, everyone else has had to make do with refurbed trains.
Take the ECML, I've worked on those Mk3's and 4's a few times, refurb after refurb, and some of them were built in the late 60's.
These new trains will be built by Hitachi - parts sourced in Japan and elsewhere, but put together here in the UK, either at Gascoigne Wood near Sherburn-in-Elmet (Leeds) or somewhere in Wales.
If it does come to Gascoigne Wood, I hope to get work there, as apparently it'll bring over 500 jobs for sumat like 15 years at least. :y

No that is not quite true.
On South Eastern Railways we have had these modern Class 375 trains for about the last five years, replacing the old slam door units.:
On the high speed line in particular we have also the Hitachi Class 395, Javelin, 140 mph 'bullet trains' traveling alongside the Eurostar units.

Certainly lines operated by at least South Western Trains and Chiltern Railways among others have also enjoyed the benefit of brand new stock over the last few years. ;) ;)

On our new stock the air con seems to blow flat out regardless of temperature. The fans are uncomfortably loud but unfortunately not loud enough to drown out the constant recorded messages about remembering not to jump out of the windows (which don't open), etc. >:(
I think I preferred the slam door trains, but then I didn't have to suffer them on a daily basis.

Pretty sure I've worked on Mk3's built at Derby in 1969.
Small works plate at the footstep, but that was 5 years ago now.
Now I think about it, the new trains would be for the ECML.
Not sure, but over 300 carriages, as the old GNER had about that many Mk$ coaches on the ECML that were refurbed at Bombardier, Wakefield (RIP), then again when National Express took over (and consequently cocked it up!).
I think Grand Central had some of that GNER rolling stock too - refurbed at Central Rivers and Loogie barroogie.

I'm afraid there are very few that I know of with genuine Southern Region EMU and DMU "slam door stock" as known by the Southern commuter of past decades.
Of course most pre-grouping, grouping, and British Railway coaches had doors that you slammed shut, but these interestingly are not included in the southern definition of "slam door stock" which were in self powered EMU's or DMU's units. ;) ;)

Exactly right Tunnie, as, probably very wisely, no preservation railway run by amateurs with members of the public, with children, floating around will ever be licenced by the Railway Inspectorate, or the insurance companies, to do so! ::) ::) :D :D ;)
A great pity! But I know the Mid Hants uses DMU's, and other lines do likewise. That is as far as it will go :'( :'(

I can't find any info. on this but I believe they ran the new Alton line rolling stock on the Watercress line before it went into service for proving and staff training using an old diesel electric loco as a DC power source instead of the third rail.
I certainly remember it throbbing up and down the line most evenings until quite late. Fortunately it was before we moved house so it wasn't at the bottom of the garden then but the other side of Alton.

Indeed although from what I have seen, thats not massively more risk than the 'big railway' either ;D ;D

Too true Mark! :y :y It is amazing what some members of the public do! ::) ::)
This has reminded me of what I was told by an old railway engine driver on the Mid Hants. He told a number of us when discussing third rail electrification, that back in steam days he knew a member of footplate crew who peed from the engine...............onto the third rail!! :o :o He died!! :P :P :P :P

I remember that one from mythbusters, think that one was busted. Current could travel up the errr 'stream' but not enough to kill

All I can say Tunnie was this particular engine driver told us that story in the late 1970s, and he knew the chap who had died. The blokes wee had apparently completed a circuit with him holding the engine side rail; the power went straight through him to earth! :o :o

That was from an electric fence though, IIRC. A somewhat higher impedance source than a third rail. ;)

We're still using a first-generation single-car DMU on Cardiff Queen St - Cardiff Bay shuttles.
It's a Class 121 'Bubble Car'. :'(

Chiltern Trains have one, used to see it on my old commute, does the shuttle between Princes Risbough to Aylesbury. Its been upgraded, had central locking and it looks like they pinched a couple of displays from the Class 165's when they got re-furbished.

The simple answer is Lizzie "I'm not sure".
However, Tunnie's ditty certainly rings a bell, as I'm sure that our bubble-car came from the Chiltern area - and it also has central locking.
A right PITA to operate though - I like the single-car Class 153s on Bay shuttles, which were themselves originally Class 155 or 156 Sprinters.
153s are the backbone of the Heart of Wales line these days, and are, as Pop Larkin says "Perfick".
Cramped cab at one end though.

As you may be aware, 2 of the loco owners I know have/had safety roles on the railway.
I know of at least one case of a loco failing on a section of track in scalectric country, the driver climbed down from the cab and was killed.
The cause was a failed earth return and hence the whole loco was live thanks to an un-fixed fault on the unit.
As for the idiots that are the general public, I encountered one the other weekend, As I was giving it full stick in the 47 heading north towards I spotted a family walking down the line!
We were the third train of the day as well so its not like it had been quiet!
Given we had 4 coaches, us, plus another 47 and a grid on the back.....it was a heavy train to!

Yep, that is the type of thing we mean! The other one is the unauthorized enthusiast photographer who think "that" photograph is worth their blood and guts over the front of the loco!! ::) ::) ::) Seen it in the past all too often! :( :(

What do you think of my shunter!

Thats me 'in the seat'.
We were shunting a couple of DMU cars around and hence the need to move the lab11 coach.
I have to say, shunting with a 47 is not easy!

Great picture Mark, and I just wish I was still a regular footplate volunteer. You are very fortunate to be involved in such glorious work.
Family and serious work commitments took that away that pleasure some time ago! ::) ::) ::)
