Title: Apologies
Post by: bob.dent on 27 May 2010, 10:56:09
I posted a joke yesterday (deleted by admins) that apparently upset one or two people. I know it was a bit un-PC but it was not my intention to cause offence and I apologise to anyone I may have offended. :-[ :-[
Those on here that know me know that it would be most unlike me to offend people. :)

I remember that. No-one said a word of complaint, we do seem to be heading slowly along the PC road on OOF recently, which is a shame imo.
It used to be the most un PC place you could find, no - one cared as long as the intention was just to have a laugh and not seriously malicious, seems like the thought police have started catching up with us. >:(
Imo you had nothing to apoligise for Bob - it was a joke, nothing more , nothing less. ;)

how amazing??

so many opinions which are akin to what i shared.....my opinion!

surely double standards stay outside of the door and most certainly contrary to OOF spirit??

nevertheless, just remember RESPECT doesn't cost anything but takes a lot to earn.

there is absolutely no need to be patronizing - try searching for DECENCY - its next to the shelf selling HUMOUR on eBay!

I read a couple lastnight Bob but can't remember, it's been a long week. Knowing you i don't imagine you'd post anything obscene or over offensive as that is'nt your nature so maybe some folk are a little too easily offended. If someone ruffles my feathers with a post i reply to it not run to the teacher.
If the members who were offended came forward & explained why i for one would accept thier view even if i did'nt share it & think much more of you for doing so. Guy. :(

Its nothing to do with decency and respect, its to do with lefty namby pamby political correctness, and buying into the thought police crap which permeates throughout this country nowadays.
As I mentioned in the samaritans thread I (and several others on here ) originate from the emerald isle. Do I complain when people post Irish jokes ? - nope, if they are funny I laugh at them - it is a joke, no more than that
Almost all humour is at someones expense (if you want to look at it from that perspective) so it is actually patronising imo to leave out Irish/muslims/ fill in as you think appropriate.
I dont know and dont care what colour/creed/race you are mate, it makes absolutely no difference to me, but I think you need to lighten up and have a laugh with everyone else rather than expect the forum to change its ways to suit your view of things. ;)

I see the "samaratins thread has been binned as well (unless Im even more blind than I thought ?)
I sympathise with the admins - if someone complains they are pretty much obliged to do something, Im just wondering if some of those Nu Liebore MP,s who (thankfully) got booted out the other week, have bought themselves an Omega and joined OOF?  ::)
Its getting a bit ridiculous imo. :(

i had a "break off" moderated by admin last week, and concidered closing my account frankly, esp as a search revealed numerous other instances which are presumably ok.

however, in the light of other members posts esp. by the likes of KW etc, which i find amusing in an outrageous kind of way, its not suprising admin are clamping down, trouble is its coming accross as over zelous and righteous, which far outweighs the original problem imo, ffs lighten up. And i dont mean a diet <jokey comment that last bit, just in case somebody gets on their high hoarse. >:(

Why???? part quote from guidelines "Members being offensive to other members will not be tolerated. Offensive or abusive public threads or private messages will be looked in to and appropriate action taken by the Moderators." Everybody on here can appreciate action being taken if members are abusive/offensive to fellow members but if threads are posted which are meant to be taken light heartedly and PC members do not like the tone or content it seems that a quick tap of the "alert" button will activate the admins nuke system.
We all know that admins have in some part, a thankless task and are often caught between "a rock and a hard place" but as noted in other replies on this post there does appear to be a perception amongst most of the rank and file members that the forum is becoming reminiscent of H.G.Wells`s Big Brother.
Just my thoughts
Title: Re: Apologies
Post by: albitz on 27 May 2010, 23:54:35
Fully agree with your sentiments, but the admins probably feel (from past history) that if they dont stop these things in their tracks, they quickly have a riot on their hands and the thankless task quickly becomes a lot more thankless.
It is sad though to see general caht becoming sterile and tedious. It needs reinvigorating and this aint going to help imo. :y

What is your problem? Each time I share an opinion – thats a “no go” but you can share your as you please???

Don’t get me wrong Albs – I don’t mean to sound personal or anything – I just cannot for the life of me understand the idea behind making a mountain out of a molehill. :-/ :-/

You or the majority of the people here do not know me personally or my appreciation of humour so please don’t twist this into a personal nitpicking session. :y

When did I EXPECT this forum or people like you to change their or its views???  I am merely sharing my opinion like you and others are – get over that!  If you or anybody for that matter thinks racist jokes are funny and perfectly fine for everyone – that’s your opinion and I, again, well within my right of an opinion, will strongly disagree and voice that if I deem it necessary.

I have already been reprimanded for not following the rules previously, so I will alert mod if that’s what the rules expect from me.  For the record, I did not alert mods for every joke on here, I did only for one of them (not the Samaritans one mind) but did express my disagreement on the thread.

The Samaritans joke was funny, so too was the joke about the dog. :y

There will always be jokes about dyslexics, Alzheimers, Blacks, Whites, Asians, Japanese, Chinese, French, Germans, Irish, Scots, Anglicans, Roman Catholics, Muslims, AIDs, Bulemia, Syphilis, short people, tall people, blind people, deaf people, middle class, lower class, young people, old people, limbless people, Essex girls, blondes, redheads,  Southerners, Northerners....can I stop now?

Stereotyping for the sake of humour is natural. It has no deep meaning, no hidden hatred.

I liked the joke about the dog. It was a clear case of stereotyping, but I like to think that I am wise enough to see the humour and not cast doubts about the teller's motives.

Racism? Pah!

I was the first person to employ a black candidate in the financial sector of the City in which I was involved in the 1980s. It caused a few raised eyebrows (indeed, I was summoned to the MD's office to discuss my appointment), but I defended my decision by saying that he was the best person for a the job and the fact that he was soon head-hunted from the company bore out my views. Can I still listen to a "black" joke and find it funny? Yes. And so could he. He was a credit to his upbringing and his culture. :y

I am short(ish). Can I listen to a joke about short people and find it funny? Yes.

I agree with Albs that this PC stuff is indeed nonsense. Deeds, not words, are what racism is about. Long live humour. Without it we are sterile.

P.S. Lend me a fiver, I'm a bit short.   ;) ;D

What you consider to be racist and what I (and probably most other members) consider racist are two very different things, and therein lies the problem imo.
I do think that as a newbie you may be better served by spending a bit longer getting the feel of the place and understanding the humour of it before voicing your opinions so strongly.
Of course you are entitled to your opinion - individual freedom is something that I will always fiercely defend, but remember that everyone else is also entitled to theirs, and afaik you are the first person who has complained about the un-pc nature of general chat ;)

I have obviously missed something :-[ :o or perhaps a lot ::) perhaps it is the fact that if I read something that I do not like, or is, inmo iffy I move on and do not read it or comment on it. It may not be to my taste, lots of jokes are not, but I accept that they are not posted with any intention to offend, just to be funny to those that like that sort of thing... :y

The only thing I ask is 'joke' or 'NWS' warnings, as often Little Miss Vamps will join me in my oofing.. ::) :D the warnings do what they are intended to do, so I do not open such threads when she is watching..... :D :D

Now this I actually appreciate - its sound advice; you seem to have identified that we actually agree to disagree which is where it ought to have stopped.  never mind :D

wrt - whats renders something racist - I believe there is a  clear definition in Law though which may be a good benchmark :y :y

I think your viewpoint on certain matters is probably now understood. The thing is, what do we do about it ? Do we now think carefully about posting certain types of jokes etc because we know that one member doesnt like them?
Or do you the member concerned, decide that you have made your point and for the sake of harmony decide to refrain from making the point every time you feel offended ?
You can of course if you so wish, decide to carry on regardless, but tbh I can see that getting a bit tediou s for all concerned.
Alternitavely you could read back the points made by myself and others and ask yourself if we may actually have made some valid points. It never does any harm to challenge ones own beliefs from time to time. I used to be a socialist ( a long time ago) but I challenged my own beliefs and now look at me. ::) :)

As for legal definitions - the law and justice are distant cousins, and if this definition was made in the last 13 years then it should most likely be consigned to the dustbin along with all the other ludicrous things which were imposed on the country during that period, imo.

Challenging own beliefs is excellent, perhaps you (and other too) ought to lead by example.

so where do we go from here?  I think the options you have given me are ok but if I may suggest that we use our sense of judgement a little more it MAY help.

If the legal definition of racist / racism is not a good indicator "if in doubt leave it out". . .
imagine the joke is told by a non-stereotyped individual in a room full of those very stereotyped people in the joke. . .if that person believes the joke will be fine and go down well,  then go agead and say it. . . .

if however, that person thinks he will get his / her head kicked in - along with a visit to the nearest A&E - do not! :D :D :y

people - I think there are lessons to be learned all round today.  IMHO I dont think the majority of peeps here are racist. . . but do feel sometimes unknowingly and indeed unintentionally may offend people - therefore, should be a little more considerate.

I have really enjoyed OOF and even feel this and the other threads have been healthy debating, good for all in the long run. Please dont be upset / annoyed / angry with anything I have said. . .  :y I just wanted to highlight my view.

I have also figured that alerting Mods in not an appreciated thing, right??  I understand now. :D

Every member has the same right as another one to alert mods if they feel it is necassary. It is generally percieved to be something to be used for serious/urgent matters which need to be brought to their attention immediately. So we are back to the issue of judgement again, which is of course subjective. ;)

agreed??

Nah - Not if i'm going to have to explain the punchline to all those people ;D ;D

"subjective"

absolutely Albs - this is the key.

I think we are almost at another round about! ;D as I can sense we're bout to go round in circles again!

(Dont fancy wasting another "tank of fuel" on this one :y)

sorted??   :y

I was one of those who objected to the joke on the grounds that it was both offensive and racist.

I don't generally mind "offensive", but I'm not currently in the right frame of mind to accept what I consider to be racist connotations when making jokes about unemployment and benefits.

Sorry about that.

Things in this thread have been brought up a few times in the time I have been a member.

In general, no joke will suit everyone.  Hence it was debated and agreed (To a point) to mahe more use of smiles in the titles and add warning especially to those pratts who posted up the lovely youtube video's that ended in the scary images and loud screams that could have affected people of a delicate disposition.

Pictures with flesh/nudity get a NWS warning as do most jokes, other jokes need a warning to suit.

The point then is if there has been a warning posted about it's content then any one viewing was pre warned, there is no point in nuking a post for one complaint, but there is a case if multiple complaints.

But I will also add if it's the same people complaining about the jokes each time them why do you read them and complain when there are warning on them.  Plus the people complaining - how much of a contributor to the forum.

Ozzy - You seem to be getting a feel for the forum, it's like a kids playground at time's, odd rude word, dirty joke, wise crack, spitting of dummy and falling out.  The attitude of the forum seems to change every 1000 new members or so, and the ones that have been here the longest like the change the least, I am now seeing the 2nd or 3rd attitude change in the forum since I joined.  Basically we end up chatting on different levels, you either join in or leave them to it.

There are lots of things I have no interest in, like the bus thread, but look at the length of the thread and how many have contributed.  Some times serious threads die in  2 or 3 replies, and the stopid threads go on for ever.

The people that take stuff too seriously on here tend to get wound up and leave, whats the point, The main stuff on here is in the car related threads, no bad language, no falling out.

General chat, is general chat, like being in the pub, it's where it all happens, only difference is, when it all kicks off there are no fisty cuffs.   ::)

Right, I think this thread's run it's course now and all views aired. It's a shame really because most jokes I receive or hear involve a slight degree of "un-PCness" for want of a better word, and are funny taken in the right context. In the years I've been on this forum I've posted and seen jokes that are probably more "risque" than this one was and everyone's always taken it in the light hearted manner in which it was posted. I won't bother posting anymore jokes as a result of this furore which is a shame as it was just a case of brightening up General Chat with a bit of a laugh. :'(

the joke in question was astonishingly racist and very unfunny - in my opinion.
I didn't reply as I didn't want to start a ludicrous debate on race with a lot of members who can't seem to grasp the difference between being free to say what they like and then being offended by people taking offence at their outrageous racism :o
I've never complained about a post on here in my life and I don't ever intend to - I prefer to have discussions, but I can fully understand why members chose to complain - it was deeply offensive, as well as assuming that the entire OOF forum is white and wouldn't take offence.....which seems highly unlikely on both counts  :y

I am not sure, nothing wrong with having a sense of humour......

Being an adult also means being tolerant.

In this country far too many people these days are too easily offended, how would they ever survive out in the real world, away from the nampy pamby PC obssessed UK.....??

Sense of perspective needed i think......

P.S. Lend me a fiver, I'm a bit short.   ;) ;D

Ahhhh.....so you're a shortarse Nick.....that figures... ::) ::) ;)

Well i'm one of the people that contributed in the 'dog' joke & may well have been responsible for having it taken off!
I used a play on words when refering to 'muzzles', cos that's what u sometimes do to dogs.
I am not a 'racist' but enjoy telling jokes & having jokes poked at me to which i 'laugh' cos they're a 'joke'
Jokes are told around the world (taking the mickey out of fellow countymen & women) and many many people are paid a fortune telling them.
At home in the UK we have 4 countries - England, Scotland, Ireland & Wales with each taking the p*ss out of each other without World War 4 taking place when mentioned in discussion forums!!
Nickbat made a comment regarding race, creed, diseases, height etc. - Well u missed out the 'JEWS' & i'm highly offended  >:(

Why?? Cos i'm Jewish!! We are a small 'minority' of approx 250,000 in the Uk & i've generations of family that have & are living in England and i've never complained about anti-semitism (against Jews). We as a race have been persecuted for centuries but now Israel as a State stands for no nonsense.

I've posted jokes on this forum about mine & other peoples religion without people making comments apart from how funny the jokes have been!

As soon as some-one mentions 'm*slims' its Politically Incorrect - why?? I don't take any offence whatsoever when people poke fun at us Jews ...... i just join in cos i've a sense of humour & after all it's freedom of speech - well it used to be!!!!

So unless some-one is poking fun at u personally, get off your high horse, cos this particular topic was about buying a dog which led to a few jokes & quips. Racism NEVER came into the discussion!!  :-X

By the way did i ever tell u all the joke about the Jew, Christian & the Non-Conformist ........................  ;D ;D ;D

Can't remember seeing anything about comparing black people to dogs, so it wasn't me. I was in the middle of composing a reply to a complaint from 'one' person about being racist & by the time i tried to post it (10mins + later) the link had been cut!
People aren't defending 'outright racism' but telling jokes about race, creed etc in a tongue-in-cheek way is meant to be amusing, comical & humorous & not supposed to be malicious!
My friends are always coming out with 'you are as tight as a Jews a*rse' or 'your as much use as a bacon sandwich at a Jewish wedding' or 'the reason you have a big nose is cos the air's free'. I laugh with them, i certainley don't find it offensive!!
I'm not defending 'racist filth' & don't think this is a place for it but as i said before i would certainley be the first to take the 'mickey' out of my own religion if i find it funny.
Far too much PC is put in force in this country because the hierarchy BELIEVE its the correct decision to take when in reality its like a red flag to a bull & makes a mockery to immigrants who would rather keep a low profile rather than being hated for something that's out of their control - case in hand at the moment is the flying of England flags for the forth coming World Cup which is being banned cos 'it MIGHT offend immigrants'  >:(

Or banning the word 'black' - black sheep etc

Or taking 'Pepper Pig' off the tv cos 'it MIGHT offend Muslims' - hang on a minute what about Jews? No cos we don't find pigs offensive we just don't eat them & don't make a MEAL of it!  :D

I could go on & on & on but all i'll do is bore myself!  :-X

yeah - i think we're speaking about two different things - so i'll shut up before ww3  :-X ;)

We all like a bit of fun every now and again, whether thats a laugh at ourselves, or a non offensive laugh at someone else.

Thing is, there is a difference between scratching your arse, and tearing it to bits.  Those that can't tell that difference will find they might not be welcome here.

End of discussion - rear the bloody rules, that should give everyone an idea of the kind of behaviour expected here. If it doesn't, I respectfully suggest you book yourself into an institution.
