Teletext gone crazy?
I used to get similar or odd characters or blank bits if the reception on the channel was poor and I used teletext.
Channel five was the main offender.
That was about ten years ago though.

and here's me thinking I would get some serious repeplies to find out what is cuasing the problem. :-/

I'm with jimbobmccoy - the first line is definitely telextext output, there is a option on most set to combine text and tv

Interesting point, but thought you would have to have the aerial plugged in to recive that.
All this TV has got is the TV attached to the mains, nothing else plugged into it.

teletext will "break up" like that with a bad signal -try plugging in an aerial and see what happens

I was involved in the early days of Oracle and we had test pages like that called clock-crackers that were there to deliberately stress the system.
You may have stumbled across such a page and it may be that their transmission system put it out by mistake.
Teletext on ITV/CH5 is pretty much dead now; mind you it says Five and they don't (profess to) put out anything do they?
-
Teletext was taken off the air a year or so ago. :-/

what!!! no bamboozle :'(

It's still there; they just removed the news and most of the useful stuff. There was/may still be, an explanatory note on the system
