On my recent journey's to and from Barnstaple, I've noticed that on about a 20 mile stretch of the A361 (M5 to Barnstaple road) there's an extraordinary high amount of roadkill, mostly pheasants but a few small animals aswell. Anyway, on our way back on Monday we counted as many as we could see, and on about a 15 mile stretch we counted over 60!!! :o Somebody did tell me they think there's a pheasant farm not far off the A361 so maybe this could be a reason.
Could this be the worst roadkill road in the country or does anyone know of any worse?

Don't remember ever seeing road kill there before. Some of the speeds I've taken that road at in my youth a pheasant could have been really nasty. ::)
There's a little lane near us with a sign up, around this time of year "Peasants crossing". Seems they breed pheasants nearby and the young ones like to cross this lane in an almost continuous procession at a particular spot.
Anyway, you approach the spot in question and there are a queue of pheasants crossing the road. There are always half a dozen squished ones on the road. The alive ones look at you as you approach in a ton and a half of metal, then stop and look at their squashed brethren, then back at you. You'd think the penny would drop and they'd think "Sh!t! I'm going to get flattened by that big lump of metal". But no, they just continue ambling along, oblivious.
The lane's also a particularly good hill climb in the Westfield but I am nice to the pheasants. A mate of mine got a rabbit wrapped round his propshaft at <mumble> MPH once, and that was not a pleasant clean-up job!

Obviously an area for poor people then ;D ;D

I know what you mean, one of my mates up North hit a sheep when he was driving across Saddleworth Moor and when he got home to assess the damage, he still found parts of it stuck underneath - Yuch!! :o

I hit a seagull at 80mph once, the thing literally exploded. I was picking feathers out of the front grill for months.

Around about us we have Frog and Toad crossings. They tend to get very slippery when wet and you do loose your grip on the road.
On the A9 from Perth to Inverness there is a notorious streatch of road that has a lot of young deer and various birds killed. You do not want to have a deer through the front of your car. That would really spoil your day. ;D ;D

I hit a crow once with my drivers door mirror, had my window open at the time, couldn't see for black feathers.

I LOVE driving on that road...... Do it on the way to croyde bay....
So open... can really loose perception of speed!

Can they fly that fast?
Sorry! ;D ;D ;D

Yeah. I miss going down there every so often. Used to love climbing those hills in the Westfield when all the caravanners were about, grinding up the hills at 40 MPH. 200BHP and 650Kg meant you didn't really notice you were climbing!

Yep, one of my favourite roads too - can't beat red lining the V6 on the long uphill sections with the priority overtaking lane. [smiley=evil.gif]
Nice place Croyde Bay - about a 10 minute drive from my new house. :y

meh the roads good fun when you dont get a lorry using the bloody overtaking lane. w****rs! and when there's not a convoy of caravans on it.
nuumber of dead animals was quite shocking. me and dad suddenly realised at the exact same time... "damn theres a lot of roadkill here!".
