Title: compressor advice

Debs this is probably one you could help me out with.I am looking to buy a compressor the weekend,but was wondering if a 2.5hp 9.5 cfm model will be ok to paint cars.I have done a bit of homework on welding forum,and found out that the direct drive oil free ones are not that good,but unfortunatly im on a budget,so any advice would be great. :y

not an expert at painting, but the hvlp guns use a lot of air.
i have 150 ltr tank with 18cfm put together which can struggle on large panels.

I have a 3hp 14cfm 100litre belt drive setup and that does major spray jobs without worrying.

The key question is, what is your budget.....

Aye, the 'money' is likely the determining factor......I sprayed my plane with a 3hp. <14 Cu.Ft/min. pump on 'just' a 50ltr. accumulator and that presented no-problems on large areas with catalysed 2k.

I`d check-out the specs. for the paint gun/s you intend to use (gravity/syphon) and see what`s recommended for airflow and pressure....for, there can be a surprising variance in requirements.

You`ll need to factor-in a decent (high-ish flow) regulator/filter/dryer and a large bore air-hose into the budget too. ;)

Well my budget could probably stretch to £250,with a bit of gentle persuasion from you know who ;),but already worked out ill need a filter etc to keep the water away,and been told 10mm inside diameter air line is the best.I am actually watching an ingersol rand belt driven compressor at the moment on the bay,so fingers crossed,ill get that for a good price. :y

Depends how long the airline is as to what bore you need plus whats connected to the end has a big impact.

I find that 8mm rubber on a 10-15M length works well, 10mm gets a little restrictive and you find you end up fitting a tail to the tool of a smaller diameter in order to maintain flexability at the tool end.

Also be aware that if you go above 3hp you move into the dedicated supply territory (and not the standard 13A mains plug) so if you plan to use it in more than one location (as mine does sometimes) then you need to consider this.

Already know about power supply mark,but noticed with some 3hp models they seam to be ok with a normal 13 amp plug,and others need to be hard wired. :-/
