Went for a blast on the Kawasaki with Tunnie this evening. What a pleasant evening - Brackley, Chipping Norton, Stow-on-the-Wold, Cirencester, Bibury, Witney, then back roads back to Brackley....
Reckon its going to be a challenge to get all the flies off the visor though - thats the trouble with summer evenings....
-
Blows the cobwebs away though, so a reasonable tradeoff? ;D :y
-
i was keeping up, until i miss-shifted on 5th, and bounced off the rev limiter :-[ ;D
Still was good ride out, great scenery! A nice warm up for tomorrows run to Wales & Isle of Man!

That is some nice scenery, I'm sure it's even better on a bike. I saw Tunnie's front screen and visro when he came over some time ago, and that was covered with dead flies...and now it's got warmer so I'm sure it's worse.
-
Go to it Tunnie mate! Live life to the full while you're young & enjoy every minute along the way!! :y

great stuff. glad you enjoyed yourself.
did the same today. went round the shops in the 3.0 mig... ::)

Indeed! I am in two minds what to do after this trip as its been a while in the making, Father T works there so been meaning to do trip for a while, and there is plenty of opportunity to do more...
I was planning to sell it when i get the flat, but i have been able to get enough money together for deposit / other costs without needing to sell it.

Not sure what happened that day, it was a bit of massacre in bug world! Went out for far longer ride today and only fraction of the amount of bugs :-/

Yeah, it was a good run out - notice you had a dark visor, must have been getting a bit black at the end when the sun went down ;D
I think that time was the only time I had it wide open from a standing start. Need to find someone who can properly service it - I can't balance 4 carbs. It used an excessive amount of fuel to do those 100m, used a whole tank. It was a bit poppy/missy until we stopped at Bibury - seemed a bit better after that.

Just a bit ;D
Trouble is i have used clear visor / sun glasses combination but the glasses mist up very easy in slow speed traffic, plus i find visibility slightly restricted with them on, hence dark visor. Also looks cooler ::) ;D

Its a legal grey area, but try to carry a clear one all the time :y

yeah, i'll be shoving one in top box in case it rains as that has an anti-fog thingy.
Did smell a bit rich following you at times, you didn't leave the choke on again did you? ;D

3 gallons of lovely fuel is way to much to waste on burning on a caravan, couple of liters should get those horrible things burning nicely :y

flies first.. now weights and measures dept.. :)

Only rode my bike once this year, seem to have lost interest atm, actually toying with the idea of getting rid. Maybe I am actually going to have to admit to being too old for it now. :-/ :'(

what year and model? how many miles? is it stock? is it the gay 125bhp restricted version or the proper full fat manly unrestricted job with proper carb tops?
balancing the carbs only affects tick over.

That's pretty much the route I take when I visit you Jaime - Stow and Chippy...
If all goes to plan, I will be based at Banbury, Chippy or Witney when in post (unsure of which yet!) :y

Its the full beans version, can you imagine TB with gay version? Not many miles 40k something i think? its also stock... for its age it does look quite nice, it does have an appalling turning lock though ;D

Tried a Harley after i passed:

But pegs were mounted forward on one i tried, it rattled my fillings out at 60mph on a smooth dual carriageway ;D - Not for me i just had no feel for it, and it also refused point blank to take corners!

Went out for a blast on my 900 too, went to Stow-on-the Wold..........(not far from me).I was the loony on the Suzuki RF900 all in black with a black helmet and black visor, wish I had known you were about there.....perhaps we'll meet up sometime soon?

sounds like a plan :y
There is some meet on during Saturday, think i will be taking the bike then too :)

Carbs out of balance mostly affect idle and light load running - and can cause it to pop and splutter a bit on the overrun. 8-)
If it's running rich and thirsty I think it might need a little more attention to the carbs. Maybe the mixture needs adjustment or the floats are a bit sticky?
Not familiar with the setup on those but I'll bring my synchrometer to the Lakes if you would like to borrow it?
What you really need to do, though, is bin those carbs and Megasquirt it but I am not about to volunteer to ride pillion with a laptop to tune it. ;D

with the mileage Tunnie sugests, wonder if it needs shim stacks doing? not sure of the set up but bikes of that eara didn't have hydrolic valve adjustment, so shim stacks possibly? cams out do the maths and re fit the correct shims. Wear on the carb needles possibly? Cant remember if it was the zx10 that suffered with it? but i'm sure TB knows all that stuff.

EXCUSE ME.....
Megasquirt???
Please explain.
WAS going to dynojet my bike and rolling road, but..............

Full fat, fully gay, fully restricted, bog standard UK spec with the flat carb tops. 125bhp when it left the factory in 1989. Occasionally look on egay for new carb tops, not sure if it needs new jets?

3 out of 4 ain't bad - it is the UK spec, restricted version. Yes, I know it still shows your bulky tank a clean set of heels ;)

Carbs always were a PITA, never liked them.
How can I tell if mixture is out?
-
How can I tell if mixture is out?
Fit a Lambda sensor. ;)
The problem is, each cylinder has its' own choke so one could be rich and the next lean.
Setting up carbs also normally relies on them being set up at idle and automatically being correct over the full range of speeds and loads thereafter. A reasonable assumption when they are new but once the needles have started to wear, jets have blocked with crud, etc. it all goes wrong.
Don't forget the timing is probably adjustable too?
What condition are the plugs in?
Can you safely cut the engine straight after a full-bore acceleration through the gears, coast to a halt and check the plugs? Might tell you something about the mixture under full load and also indicate of there's a pot that's running richer than the others. Put a dose of lead substitute like millers VSP through it when you do this to give the plugs some colour.
Other than that, find out the proper procedure for tuning the carbs and see if that improves it before doing too much else.

Or spend some money and send it to a reputable bike tuner. ::) :-/

Plugs replaced last year, along with (oiled) air filter. Not a quick job to get to plugs, as tank has to come off.
Got the Haynes BoB and the Kawasaki manuals, will have a gander - but its bloody carbs, I hate them ;D
-
3 gallons.
Bloody hell Jaime that's enough to reduce a whole caravan site to ashes.

Completely and utterly. Not quite as gay as a BMW GS1200, as it has no trouble leaving that in its mirrors.
Keep looking on the 'gay for new carb tops, never come up at sensible money :(

Please take care on two wheels lads yesterday was the first anniversary of my sons best freind getting killed outright at the age of twenty by a car pulling out of a side road on him, my boy was at his side when the paramedics pronounced him dead. Remember you could be the best bike rider in the world but you are so vunerable on a bike in the event of a crash

Indeed. For me, that heightened sense of awareness is one of the thrills for me, which is something you gain after several years on 2 wheels.
I was always taught to assume that tin can drivers would be incompitent, and try to kill you. Sadly, it seems the quality of car drivers has plummetted in the last 10-15yrs imho. Possibly because youngsters can afford cars now, so have missed out on the experience/awareness that can only be gained on 2 wheels.

Fully agree, I started on 2 wheels 35 years ago and that is what has made me such an awesome driver as well as godlike on a bike, I am also very humble. :y
