Title: The Universe.
Post by: Field Marshal Dr. Opti on 04 June 2010, 16:36:44
Does anyone know just how large it is?.
Is it finite .....or infinite?
Is there just the one universe......or do we have an infinite number joined together by wormholes?.

Einstein.....Stephen Hawking......Edwin Hubble....Carl Sagan and many other great thinkers....have all been unable to give a definitive answer........ :-/ :-/

however... I feel confident that someone here at the OOF.....has a complete and final solution to these searching questions..... after all... we now have more than eight thousand members... ::) ::) ::) ::) ;)

well it's at least 93 billion light years across - thats as far as we can see (the observable universe), so somewhere between 93 billion light years and infinity  :y

by my calculations, of course  ::)

I' am afraid to tell you that your calculations are slightly out by around 50 million light years, this subject has also been debated and researched at great length and cost in the Keswick area by the following well known OOF astronomers; Darth loo Knee, Elite Pete, Bob.Dent, The Boy, Marks DTM Jimbob, Broocie and AA provided the infinity light year gauge astronomers telescope, effectively an aluminium beer can with a 5cm hole cut out the base, wired to the omega range computer which displayed the 143 billion light yrs on the MID display, However, much malt whiskey and beer was drunk on that night so the fugire may vary just a wee bit ::)

............and its age is 13.7 billion years, give or take a million or two!!    That's old enough for me! ::) ::) :D :D :D :D

The OOF measurement was taken in May/June 2007, does yours pre-date that then ::)

universe and infinity is not something easy for curent technology .. although we can do calculations and modelling.. I think more time is required or a really fast space ship ;D

Cem.....We have been able to travel at the speed of light and and beyond since 1966.....when the USS Enterprise was first put into service .......so I'm a little surprised that we have not explored the universe further... ;)

ESA might be a better bet in that case :y, as european union are always able to bail out banks and other countries ;D ;D...so why not fund a really fast space ship :y

We all know it is one giant doughnut without a beginning nor end and a hole in the middle where man has not filled it in with collective thought of what we want there!! ::) ::)

The truth is out there..............but we will have to wait a lot longer to see it :D :D ;)

looking to the rate of information humanity collected Lizzie a few hundred years can bring info that is almost unbelievable..but surely we wont see :-/

but before I really think human kind will have space colonies in the future as the world sources will be depleted soon.. so hi there aliens :D ;D

Well they did thier sum and came up with one figure.

Then they produced telescopes and came up with another figure.

They they built observatorys and the figure changed again.

Then Hubble was created, and a woman a nasa came up with the figure that Lizzie mentioned, so thats it's sorted.

well at least untill they build a more powerfull space telescope that is.  :-/

I reckon that you could be just the man to finally solve this age old question Skrunts...... ::) ::) ;)..I had high hopes that Ms Debs would be able to crack it.......but is seems well  beyond even the "OOF Einstein".....you are our last hope Mr skruntie... : :-* :-* :-*

In theory it's infinate, as there is no current way to prove it comes to and end or stops.

Look at this idea, we (earth) = a marble, put that marble in into a weather with a ball bearing an orange tennis ball (sun) a golf ball etc for the other planets. and call that our gallaxy system.

Now put that weather ballon inside a hotair type ballon and throw loads of other weather ballon gallaxy systems in there.

Then chuck a 100 hot air ballons into an even bigger ballon, you can never say where it might end.

We can only judge what we can see, hear, smell etc. So we look at insects under a microscope in a lab a 10x, 100x 1000x magnification and even more, but not so long ago it was just a magnifying glass, and before that the human eye, so all that time back it was probably nigh on imposible to count the legs on a centipede.  but now it it can be blown up to 100x life size.

The military have satelites that can read a newspaper from space.

So 10 years from now we may have another theory, then a 100 years from now then yet annother.

Carbon dating for example is annother gray area. scientists say one thing, and 20 years later they contradict themselves.  20 years later, thier theoris change again.

So what you have to do is ask yourselfs, who do you trust, or what do you believe.  either way there is no real way we will ever know the age of the dinasore era or the size of the universe (the name that it currently has)

Alternatively ......

We are a sub atomic particle (in someone else's perception / world). with further sub atomics whirling around us (moon). We, in turm, whirl around larger particles (sun) and this solar system ( as we know it) forms an atom in this other world.  Trillion gazillion of these "atoms" form the matter which makes up some (to us) gigantic world ..... we could be happily sitting within some gigantic toilet roll...... waiting for the end   :o :o

now, when it comes to the question of "are we alone".....id love a discussion on this so will start a new thread...
