Retourne Concorde?.....J'espère qu'il n'y a pas de faux espoirs! ;)

excellent news :y
-
It's about time we celebrated this engineering marvel 8-) 8-) :y
-
Finally ... some sense.
-
That is wonderful news Debs 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)
I just hope that all the spares, technical expertise, and certification, let alone funds, can be secured for the foreseeable future ;) ;)
It would have been great to also get a British Airways Concorde back into the air, but I cannot see that happening with the financial situation of that company and our country! ::) ::)
-
It would be wonderful to see it in the air again. Thanks for spotting that , Debs. :y
-
just got to keep the runways clean, something the french struggle with..

I fear BA did too good a job at breaking and parts dispersal !

sounds like good news debs. :y

I fear BA did too good a job at breaking and parts dispersal !
BA made absolutely certain that all of theirs were put beyond ever flying again. >:(

For this reason alone, i hope untie and BA manage to destroy each other is their current dispute

Indeed, they put huge efforts in stopping Branson buying them as well.
He would have run them at a loss, because he knew the image they had. But i reckon he could have made them profitable again, Virgin are making record profits, were BA are loosing hand over fist.
I just hope they restore it to an Air France look, as BA don't deserve it and get all thats coming to them

kin ell - i agree with tunnie :y
BA couldn't wait to mothball concorde as it was costing too much, the minute Air France had the accident they pounced :(
It is actually the only time in history I can think of whereby we went backwards technologically - concorde was an awesome sight, and it got canned after one incident? do ferrari scrap their f1 car if it ploughs into a barrier? do man united scrap their first team if they lose a game? ridiculous :o

not quite the same, f1 cars are constantly updated, redesigned. players bought and sold to keep the team the most competitive it can be.
concorde on the other hand was designed in the 60 s.
as with anything, if the money is not coming in improvements beyond safety standards are not going to happen.
f1 and football get that.
the equipment used in the moon landings in the 70s is quite scary. you wouldnt want to go two foot off the ground let alone 240 thousand miles into space. :o

Not sure it's quite as clear-cut as that. BA invested a lot into getting Concorde back in the air. Quite and extensive programme of fuel tank modifications and testing. I get the impression it was AF who were dragging their heels at that point.
Rumour has it that Air France came very, very close to losing another Concorde to pilot error shortly after its' return to service. At the time scrutiny showed that the pilots in the original disaster had not handled the emergency entirely "by the book" although their fate was probably sealed anyway.
Air France and Airbus (who inherited type support for Concorde) were desperate to avoid any further embarrassment and, rather than pull out of supersonic passenger services "unilaterally", leaving BA to continue, Air France did a deal whereby Airbus would agree to withdraw the type support for Concorde, grounding BA's fleet as well.
This is just one theory, and I'm not saying BA weren't also looking for a way out, but it seems strange that BA would invest so much in getting Concorde back into the air for just another couple of years.
Don't forget that 9/11 happened in the intervening years too.

maybe not the best analogy, but i'm sure concorde was regularly updated tho :y

good points Kevin, I still feel sad when bean counters put the mockers on something so universally loved and admired, 2 incidents isn't a lot for a plane is it? i suppose there were so few of them tho :-/ the russians couldn't make it work either(remember that scary looking dragon from the 60's/70's that ploughed into the earth at an airshow? tupelov if i remember my top trumps :o)

..and a source of a load more conspiracy theories about whether it was a copy of Concorde and whether it was being filmed by a French Mirage fighter during its' display at the Paris airshow, the sight of which in what he was told would be empty airspace prompted the TU144 pilot to lower the nose so violently that the engines flamed out.
.. or was it the journalist's camera that jammed the controls?
Nothing like aircraft for generating fascinating stories. ;)

Hi,
I have spoken to a few people involved in this and the intention is to get the engines fired up first, then take it on a taxi run, then an aborted take-off then hopefully a flight. There has been meetings with the CAA and other agencies and there seems to be no problems with what they are attempting. The biggest stumbling block appears to be BA and Airbus but as the concorde they are doing the engine testing on is owned by the french museum (It being an Air France concorde) its all system go to try and get the engines fired up :y. Some intereseting reading at http://www.save-concorde.co.uk and http://heritageconcorde.com/?page_id=2663e

my older sister works for the air investigation unit at heathrow, she did the final report for the concorde crash investigation, they are doing the lybian air crash now what crashed earlier this month.

LOL... "Gallon of kero, that cheap socket set that you keep in the car, some molegrips, Jump leads & a tow rope....."
..... If it fires up - keep it running as the battery's prob dead.
What has happened to British engineering pride!... I somtimes drive past filton & cant help but feel a slight lump in my throat when i glance over at G-BOAF now rivited to the tarmac.....
We need more Fred Dibnah's, Norman Foster's & Izzy Brunels...

Much as I hate to say it, I tend to agree. When you look at the trials and tribulations that brought XH558 back into the air, and the ongoing struggle to keep it there, I think attempting it on an aircraft of so much greater complexity will be a hiding to nothing.
I think Concorde is something the like of which we'll never see flying again, I'm afraid. :'(
Commercial aircraft design now focusses on stamping out the same old cigar tubes with turbofans bolted on. Nothing innovative gets a look in unless it makes them cheaper to operate.

concorde getting decomissioned had more to do with 9/11 and people not flying than the air france crash.
Although BA did their best to make sure no one else got to operate concorde it has to be said they ended withthe same number of planes they started with
Air france lost 2 they crashed one and bent another one with a hard landing on its tail
BA were making money with their concordes air france were loosing loads of cash with theirs and at the time they were in talks with a merger with KLM .
The maintenance deal for concorde was a joint thing between air france and BA and when Air france pulled the plug Ba had the choice of pay the whole cost of the maintenace program to airbus or retire the BA fleet. A lot of cash to keep 5 planes in the air.
