Needs to be small, netbook size idealy, but be able to store/cope with several large ish(?) programmes, google earth, phone apps like nokia updater, and stuff for the car like lpg software, eml 327, vag com. etc or at least thats what i use. But does that mean a small lappy wont have a proper com port if i need one? It'll be web brousing and pic storing mostly?
Me boyfday is coming up and me Mum sugested an ipad! sigh!
Any recommendations ?

I sold a lappy to a member on here other day, might be what you need, a little larger than a notebook, but I am sure there is one other still at home somewhere. Will I have a look for you? Or are you going fro shiny new one?

Don't buy HP.....

Don't buy HP.....
Agreed, always best to pay cash up front. :y :D ;D.......I,ll get my coat. ::)

Will you want to interrogate live data using "My Naff Code Reader"? May have an impact (Processor speed) though Opelscanner live data seems OK on everything i've run it on.

thank god that was a joke, in danger of agreeing again!

Couldnt have that happen twice in the same year Tunnie, at least one of us would have to see a doctor. :y :D ;D

Got an Acer Aspire one Pro here. Been around a while so it's not the latest and greatest but got a pretty good spec. for the money. Feels pretty solidly built and I haven't managed to kill it yet. Came with XP Pro which suited me better than the usual Windows 7
crippled starter that usually comes with a netbook these days (and most of them haven't got the spec. to run it anywhere near successfully IMHO).
As it is I run Ubuntu Netbook on it 99% of the time and only boot XP to map LPG systems on the whole.

I don't think he's tested it with live data recording but the Gnome's netbook handles code reads etc with the "My Naff Code Reader" without any great problems.
I'll get him to try live data when he gets in from work and let you know.

Rereading the OP, I do wonder if most netbooks will have the power to run 'several big apps'. The idea of a netbook was always as a tool for web/email, rather than a full PC/Laptop. Hence why many of them have Atom processors etc.
Putting in decent processors, such as Core2/i3/i5/i7 will dent the tiny batteries, rendering the idea pointless.
This is why I am still stuck carrying my rather good HP laptop around, because I can't find anything smaller that meets my needs. Its been a good old workhorse, but is showing signs of the abuse its taken, so i keep looking for a replacement - unsuccessfully so far.
I did toy with that Compaq branded netbook in Tesco for £199 until 5 or 6th of June. OK, its an Atom, but for £200 ::). And I think Tesco Direct (order online, pick up at local store) are on Cashback Kings (http://www.cashbackkings.com/?ruid=3025050-keep) and Topcashback (http://www.topcashback.co.uk/ref/TheBoy) ::)

Was of the understanding a netbook would be less capable, however Kevins seems rammed full of programmes and 2 os's he seems to be able to boot at will. Its Tiny which i like, and if its something your even remotely considering then i'm thinking it'll be fine for anything i'll do with it.....
......but will i miss a c drive? cd or dvd whatever? i presume even a small laptop would likely bin that to save space? i do tend to go for top spec to avoid the one time i get frustrated with it koz it hasn't got whatever feature. Then probably never use it. I spose a memory stick can do the same job as a c drive?
-
Yup, don't get hung up on optical drives - we rarely use them anyway. Needed (usually) for OS (re)install, but 99.9% of modern stuff will happily use an external USB CD Drive (I have an old Pioneer DVD writer in one of those £6 egay cases that I use for such things).
I was looking at netbook purely for a bit of web/email (tethered to phone for 3g connectivity), and a bit of TIS for tech2 work.
-
Oh, crikey! Just re-read it myself and if you want to run anything from Nokia, good luck. Best buy a quad core. ;) I never install Nokia software on a machine I want to do anything other than flatten and re-install afterwards.
If you want connectivity to/via a phone, install the drivers for it and nothing more... And as for those gay animations that run as soon as the cd spins up. >:( >:( >:(
Having said that, I wouldn't rate anything else listed as a "big" application.
Real serial ports are a bit of a rarity now, too.
The choice of Netbook versus Laptop is a tradeoff between performance and useability IMHO.
I don't take a laptop anywhere unless I absolutely have to and a decent spec. of laptop is useless on batteries, IMHO. So view it as a desktop you can lug to a hotel room if need be.
Since I've had a netbook I take it on away with me practically everywhere I go and the battery life allows it to be useful away from the mains for a few hours too. I get a lot more use out of it than I would a laptop, but it does have limitations.

We've just had a quick play and yes it reads and records live data fine via the "My Naff Code Reader".
Spec is Samsung NC10 netbook 1 gig of ram running Win7 Ultimate.

What a total waste of time and space , and at least 30 deep at the baskit check out, left the baskit there on the floor and walked out, after at least an hour trying to find out what they had in stock.....nothing i wanted, contrary to thier web site. Should have known better really. >:( >:( >:(
