Post by: unlucky mark mv6 on 07 June 2010, 23:13:21
Now i have managed to bag myself a nice big compressor, just wondering what these air ratchets are like.Heard they are great in awkward places, but forgive me if i seem a bit thick, but how do they actually work. :-[

dont matter, press the trigger and the drive goes round.

on the 3/8 size dont be tempted to undo tight bolts by swinging on it. the dont like it.

I have one that I 'aquired' but I rarely use it. You can be almost as quick with a normal ratchet, although it has had its uses in very confined spaces, but not enough that I'd have wanted to buy my own.  ;)  ;)

I've used my windy gun a few times for speed as well as ease.  :y  :y ('aquired' from elsewhere  ::))

I use an air rachet occasionally. Won't touch tight bolts, but handy when not space to move a normal rachet....

i have one, cheapo, came as a set with a gun as well for about £50 iirc

Fine for ocassional use, for long threaded jobs like rear donut bushes, or the multipal bolts in the plastic inlet bridge. Mine wont undo or do up anything even remotely tight, 20nm ish, but thats good ciz it wont over power any threads and strip them if you misjudge letting go of the tigger. So undo with a normal ratchet or whatever, wiz em in or out with an air ratchet to save my breaked shoulder, tighten with usual wrench or spanner.

Just saves them arm/shoulder ache...... for me anyway.

Got an air drill too for £20. Far smaller, than the smallest cordless drill, and will drill out sheared off water pump bolts without removing it or the rad for space. Saved some agro that did. :y

I have an old (like 40+ years old) American unit.

To be honest, it does not get much use and as Chris has said, it wont undo or do up tight bolts/nuts.

more than i paid, but it was a while ago. Probably not up to profasional use, but ok for diy'er i suppose?

how often do you lubricate them? ie drop of oil down the inlet.

God wouldnt be without mine!!
had it around 6years or so, and agreed it wont do the intial break on a tight bolt but i just help it along by using it as an ordinary ratchet till it can!!
saves so much time and sweat, and a windy gun with long extension although not recommended use is brilliant also!!
get it if you do a lot of bot twirling!!!

I agree... I really miss mine as I don't have a compressor at the moment. I think mine's a Snap On one (or might be Mac) and has already been repaired once, after about 2 years hard use... As said though, don't be tempted to use it like a normal ratchet as they don't like it ::)

As for oiling... I used to do mine daily when they were in heavy use because our compressor didn't have a very good dryer on it but I would say a couple of drops before and after every session is plenty... It can't do it any harm :y

had to lay off the oil a bit on mine, oily head otherwise, couple of drops every third use now, which reminds me, i really should drain the compresor.

I have an Aldi one.

Great for the intake divider bolts - so many of them!
