What has the signing of the Magna Carta got to do with footie?
Come on Rooney
-
I would place a small wager on 1970 been mentioned before 1966 it will be something like "the 1970 hosts (mexico) take on the 2010 hosts (south Africa) but unlike the hosts of 1966 (England) didnt win it. Easy money ;D ;D ;D

Ah, the English ball that crossed the line / no it didn't / yes it did incident that made Germany fume, and then they let in another - "they are on the pitch, they think it is all over - it is now!!" ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)

World Cup coverage would be so much more bearable if it hadn't been for 1966...

I remember 1966 - England winning the World Cup ..... FANTASTIC :y :y :y (and also ManUtd in 1968 winning the European Cup AND in the same year getting me 1st snog :-*!!) Any road up i digress!! ::)
Of course 1966 will be mentioned more often than not - it's the ONLY bloody time we won the World Cup (unlike Scotland!! ;D ;D ;D )
The further England progress the better the 'feel good factor is'. There are millions of English that don't follow football but start talking about the national team with excitement as they progress..... its a great feeling!! :y :y
To those that can't stand football then that's your prerogative and no-ones forcing you to watch it but hey have some pride in your country if the national team do well, as with rugby, cricket and ANY sport cos it don't happen often :o :o ;D
Amen ::) ::) ::)

theres was something wrong with the ball in that one - funny shape ;D

IS THIS TRUE ?
World champions just eight years earlier, England’s decline as a footballing power was dramatic. For the first time England failed to qualify for the World Cup. A casual loss to Poland in Katowice and an unnecessary draw against Wales meant that England had to beat Poland at Wembley. There was still much home belief, epitomised by Derby manager Brian Clough who before the match began described Poland’s goalkeeper Jan Tomaszewski as a “clown”.
None of the home spectators could conceive of any result other than a home win. The first half of the match was totally dominated by England; yet the “clown” gave a master class in goal keeping, aided by the woodwork, which seemed to catch every strike missed by Tomaszewski. Apprehension began to creep into both the crowd and the team at the start of the second half, but surely Tomaszewski would crack? Concern gave way to alarm when Domarski scored for Poland after fifty-seven minutes. Six minutes later a dubious penalty was awarded to England which Allan Clarke converted. A frantic England launched attack after attack, Kevin Hector was brought on as a substitute, his debut for England, not that anyone noticed. But it was not be to, a header by Hector missing by inches. Later on Poland showed in the World Cup itself that they were far from a weak side, but it hardly lessened the pain for the serried ranks of England fans, England were out. This time Britain was to be represented by England’s gleeful neighbour and rival Scotland. :D :D
Every dog has his day.
klickster. :D :D

Geoff Hurst's "goal" off the underside of the bar was shown 58 seconds into the live coverage of the opening ceremony ::)
No one actually said "1966" in the first 10 mins :(
