not necessarily just money, time, agro as well? could do some maths, compare to dealer prices? now that would be scary. I did have a list of all the work done on my car, cant find it at the moment, it'll be thousands spent and a fair amount if time, but how much saved would you say?
-
Well 'it' & Mark saved my car from the scrap heap 3 years ago.
plus I can now do my own work, previously paid for it, not done sums, but there is no way I could have paid garage prices for all the work done, so guess we are talking thousands across 3 (well now 4) cars.
-
The forum has done more than save me money, it has paid my bills for the last 18 months with the repairs I have done for the forum members so thanks everyone ;)

Really? Wow. Thats quite impressive imo :y
-
Saved me hundreds and hundreds, thanks to Mark, and also allowed me to fix stuff myself that otherwise I wouldnt have had a prayer of doing......
:y

At least a thousand quid I reckon, and I've only had the car a year - plus James saved me a fortune when he diagnosed an electrical problem with my car rather than the head rebuild that a local garage would have scammed me for.
Plus I would definitely have sold it by now, for peanuts. Thank you very much to everyone here :y

I've always worked on my own cars, apart from when I've not had time or inclination to do it myself. ::)
-
The advice given and experience dispensed here saved me the difference between £50 odd for a pair of KYB rear springs and the £375 (plus vat) the dealer wanted to do the same job.
No doubt I will also save a considerable sum when I come to change the climate condenser that has conveniently developed a leak and also have the satisfaction of learning how to do something else of a practical nature.
On a wider point, this was a great question by Chris as the worth of the site and of all those who contribute in one way or another goes far beyond the purposes for which it primarily exists
Being somewhat misanthropic by nature - no, maybe that's a bit strong, extremely intolerant of others is maybe better - I quite naturally keep myself to myself when not working.
Whether this is an informed choice, character flaw or my experiences at the hands (and feet) of those whom I 'serve' I don't know but this site allows me to correspond and inter-relate with others in a way that has been absent hitherto fore. Whist many of you will consider this to be a sad admission, that's the way it is for me.
During the course of my service to the state I've been shot at, bombed, stabbed (twice), targeted for murder, assaulted with all manner of weapons from a plaster cast (attached to a limb) to washing machines dropped from the height of whatever convenient balcony was to hand. I have been spat upon, called a filthy British blank who should 'get the ‘f’ out of our country' by people who hoped that I, and anyone connected to me, would get cancer and die a painful death.
Not that all humanity is like that of course, but such experiences colour the view somewhat: since joining the community however I have the luxury of corresponding with others in an, for the most part, uncomplicated and non-confrontational way whilst getting a laugh and learning new skills.
That's why I treasure my membership here, as one of perhaps many people who don't have the option of associating with others 'down the pub' and whose only realistic contact with people outside the job is with colleagues or those in a similar position, it’s a lifeline to the ordinary.
-
honestly this site saved me a hefty sum though i dont know how much, through advice of getting hold of small parts for a matter of pence that may have cost me £20+ at a garage, getting a trade card to save me a wedge on the gas shocks i replaced on my elite, some little DIY jobs i had no idea i'd be able to do
-
Well said Z.
Without this forum my car would have been scrapped by now and I would be driving around in a Spanish Suzuki Vitara or English(old) Land Rover both of which no doubt would have been far more suited to the unmade roads here or even the olive groves I frequent. Whether I would then have been just as dependent on a different forum who knows!
I couldn't afford the garage bills , it is as simple as that. If I had to put a price on it then it would be hundreds if not thousands ££s saved. Just one example is I left England with a faulty ABS ECU quote from independent garage £1200. S/H part £60 plus free forum fitting advice. The OOF forum member that sold me it even lent me a small extn tool.
Long live OOF and once again my sincere thanks to everyone who has helped me over the last four years :y :y
-
It hasn't saved me anything simple reason I get the car fixed cheap with all the advice on here but the misuss goes and spends what I've saved :)
Thanks to every body who's give advice and tips on here I did save myself £80+vat for the paper clip test would never had know about it if I hadn't joined here

Exactly Andy - it's all here 8-) :y :y

It has saved me much heartache and self doubt as in the past I have tackled serious jobs on cars just using any knowledge I could gain at the time, plus using my trained, and self trained skills, with a........."well, here we go!!". That amazingly always ended in success, but took time.
However on here I have been able to check the method of doing a job out, and been able to quickly identify where certain key components are without doing much research or using Haynes. In time alone the OOF has saved a huge amount, and also saved incalculable frustration!! 8-) 8-) 8-)
Thank God for the OOF, the Car Forum!! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
I must admit that OOf is fantastic for someone like me,very little knowledge to start with but as always there is plenty of guidance available and it has given me the confidence to do more than just take it to the garage to be robbed by whoever is there.I probably have one of the lowest value cars on the forum but that doesn't matter to you guys and girls we are all Omegaphiles.I would like to thank each and everyone of you for making this forum what it is (in my eyes anyway) a pleasant and friendly place to be.As I have said earlier my car would probably be worth about £200 to most people but with the help on here I think it's sentimental value is worth a lot more knowing that I have kept my car on the road with what is available on this site. Thanks once again to all that have in the past and will in the future help me with my shed, keep up the good work. :y
-
The OOF has saved me £800 this week as I have removed the ABS ecu and sent it for repair. It also saved my wife, daughter, dog and cat from certain death as I found detailed instructions on how to remove the Bl**dy thing!
They still come close tho' as its not easy to do. :D
-
Just look at what you can save doing a cambelt kit change on a V6 - Vx prices silly and most non Vx garages wont touch a V6. For a nominal fee you can buy the OOF CD, punt around and get an OEM kit for around £50, plus second hand locking kit off the bay (mine cost less than £50!)
Double the saving if you've got 2 x V6s both wanting a belt change!!
Also agree with Zulu - this is a very friendly forum - and most of the members have a good sense of humour :y

Over 4 years & 2 Migs i'd guess a couple of grand & that's a conservative estimate given garage parts & labour rates. Much of this is thanks to MM who is changing a full clutch as we speak & despite his unfortunate antics here a while back has & is still being a total star. This however in no way detracts from other members who've helped me out no end. MDTM for the exchange heads & the cold j20! Darth Lorraine Kelly for posting me 2 engine mounts when i only needed one & the dispack link, & to all the rest of you for money saving advice...a BIG thankyou for helping me keep both my Migs tip top. 8-)
-
I couldn't even imagine how much this site has saved me. And no amount of thanks would be able to show my appreciation to many members who have helped me over the 2 years and 4 migs I've owned. :y
-
With three Omega's I wouldn't like to guess, but definitely a couple of thousand, probably a heck of a lot more.
The other point is the quality of the advice, I wouldn't have known about WIM or found out which are the best wishbones to buy, I wouldn't have known about gearbox software upgrades or which is the LPG kit to go for.
-
Not actually saved me much money; but the reason for that is my car has been mega-reliable, loads of good advice on here though had the car gone wrong :y :y
-
I have always done my own maintenance on my cars but as motors have got more complicated my self confidence took a hit this forum has restored that confidence to the point where in the past I would lift the bonnet shake my head and close it immeadiately a heart beat I will now take on jobs that I would have not attempted four years ago.
Hats off to all the guys and girls that take the time to share there Knowledge to help others by posting on OOF :y
-
Saved me a good few hundred pounds so far, as well as my sanity... If this site did not exist, the car would either have gone long ago, or I would have spent far too much money on it. :y
-
well the way i see it it, being on my second omega and trying fairly hard to buy something else due to fuel costs of my previos 2.5, i'd say to start with before even touching anything mechanicaly, 4k! As i would now be driving round in an Audi A8.......
....... and while i feel i have a fair amount of mechanical......sense (? awaits Andy b comment here) the ability this place has to educate and direct straight to the hub of most problems, and i've been able to commission lpg to save fuel costs, probably looking at something approaching £8,000 assuming the A8 behaved itself, which it wont have done after what would be 2years now, and the A8 aint exactly economical itself. Trade club cards, diy servicing, fuel costs, Tech2 help and advice, avoiding the dealers bs has got to be worth a few quid on its own.
So thanks to all. (awaits ESTMO kiss arse comment here ;D, he'll be back)

Apologies if this appears to go on forever, but I feel the need to say it regardless ( & yes, I have been imbibing the Amber Nectar ;D).
This is my first Omega, & despite being a supposedly low mileage car had obviously not been looked after before I bought it. I was able to fit a new Cam Belt,Tensioners & Water Pump within weeks of buying it with what I had learned here & the 2.2 DVD from the OOF Shop. The head gasket went just a few months into my ownership, & would have spelt disaster & possible junkyard if not for this Forum & it's Fantastic Membership! The largest job I had done previously, was an engine rebuild on a Austin Maxi nearly 40 years ago when I was young daft & fit! ;D with the help of a Haynes Manual & a new socket set (which i've still got & use more now than ever!! ::))
I've since renewed my brakes & adjusted the handbrake, fitted a new cam & crank sensor, done my own oil, filter & coolant changes, new plugs etc. ,the list goes on & on!!!! These are all jobs which I would have had to go to a Garage to get done under 'normal' circumstances, but have been able to tackle myself with confidence, because of the excellent 'how-to's' & personal help from other members :y I have even converted to LPG all on my lonesome labour wise, but with all the help & encouragement anyone could wish for from the other LPG owning members :o (although I am having problems with faulty components & so not yet commissioned! :()
I know more about the workings of this car than any other I have ever owned, & done more work on the Omega than all the others put together, but loved every flesh tearing, wallet busting minute ::) ;D
I thank my Lucky Stars every day for stumbling upon this place, and for the Selfless, Altruistic attitude of the Founder Members who started it all, built it up to what is without doubt, THE BEST ANYWHERE, BAR NONE, and continue, with the excellent & unfailing help of the Admin & Moderating team, & the hard core long term regular members, to provide us with a World Class 'Knowledge Base' from which we can keep our Omegas running with the minimum of cost & effort. I haven't even attempted to add up what the OOF has potentially 'saved' me in monetary terms, although it must be well in excess of £1000 in 15 months! :o. What I can say, is the OOF has in the past, & continues on a regular basis, to save my sanity & without it I, and no doubt many, many others would be left in a 'limbo' too sad to contemplate!!! :( Long Live the OOF!!!! :y

Difficult to quantify exactly how much money/time/aggravation the forum has saved me but its quite a lot.
I do know that if I hadnt found the forum I would have got rid of my first Omega years ago and would never had bought another. It gave me so much grief that I hated it and although I have always been a VX man, it almost put me off them for life, but once I discovered the forum things started to slowly head in the right direction and by the time I sold it, it was a nice reliable old bus and I was actually sad to see it go.
I have now replaced it with another Mig,(after a brief flirtation with Mercedes) which has already had the "OOF treatment" from Johnnycboy and so far (touch wood) I havent found a thing wrong with it. :)

You are so understanding & kind, my cup runneth over! :-* ;D :y

I can't calculate in ££££s but this site makes the difference between running an old car (no finance) and an expensive tow car (£100s a month in finance charges). I've always done my own repairs & servicing but the knowlege that is freely shared on this site has helped tremendously in pin-pointing the issues specific to the mig.
A great crowd of Guys & Gals and most appreciated ! :y

Errr, probably nothing ::)
Mind you, I probably wouldn't have the MV6 after the HGs went ::)
-
over the years? Thousands!
-
also unknown costs, if i had not known about OOF and done my own maintenance, i doubt would still own car with 145k miles, i would have sold it for a newer 'more reliable' car long ago
-
untold savings in money but without knowledge on here i would be lost. Thanks to all.
