following on from my previous "need a new laptop" thread when i was actually thinking about a netbook instead, i've heard good reports re ipads being quick, instant, reliable etc.
Anyone experienced a "gay"pad?
also heard reports of netbooks loosing performance, i'm not pc literate enough to keep a nb running tiptop.
Ta.

Seen them on the TV earlier, how much are they?
-
for 32Gb HDD they are about £800
I would prefer to but a decent laptop with that
-
Might be a bit "gay" for some but I just got SWMBO a new netbook and I could find only one for sub £400 that had a dual core processor and it was this
http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/laptops/0,39030093,49303769,00.htm
Might look a bit strange but its the best sub £400 netbook out there!

Yes, they seem ok.
My main gripes were
1) The screen aspect ratio fits neither, photos, video or most books and was not comfortable on the eye for any period of time
2) The touch screen means you get a really mucky smeary screen
3) I could not see what I personaly would really use it for in anger that a laptop does not do.
-
yup got several in the office, its basically a giant iphone. The screen does get very dirty, and if you want to do massive amounts of typing the on-screen keyboard is ok, but you would not want to type massive reports.
They have nailed tablet though, its a good size, quite light, and the interface itself is gorgeous to use.
Agree with above though, not sure what i would actually use it for!
-
Can't see the point in a computer without a keyboard myself but perhaps I'm old fashioned. ::)
I would say you'd be no worse off with a cheap netbook. If you aren't that good at keeping it tidy it doesn't really matter because you can always re-install and start again.
You can forget mapping LPG systems, code readers, etc. with an iPad, of course.
And yes, Gay. You will start to find yourself lusting after blue LEDs, fitting eyebrows over the lights on your Omega, buying Sony products, etc. ;)

Was lent one for a day by a supplier trying to get our company to buy them.
NOT that good, nice SIZE screen, not really strong enough for "site" use, a bit fragile in construction, smeary screen that scratches easily, and hard to write reports or site visit call sheets on (trying to make site visits paperless) Good idea, but perhaps they will make a "toughbook" type of version, and then we may be more interested in it.

Not bothered at all if they are £800 :-/

Thats for 32gb with 3G, non 3G 16Gb ones are £499

"if I were a rich man......................"

Could still get a nice laptop for that with the added advantage that I can decide what software to run on it. ;)

If i was in the market for a laptop i would get a MacBook, can put windows on it for LPG software and such, but also OSX for main use. About same size but lot more powerful :)

isn't the i-pad for reading papers, e-mails, and surfing the net? - i never got the impression its meant to be a lap-top.....just a nice bit of kit that no one really needs - like a speedboat :y

agree with everything everyone said tbh, so what will use it for?
web, oofing, messing about with with one eye on the tv, other on oof probably.
currently
n900, good concept for mini brousing device, usual piss poor implementation by nokia, updates not progresding fast enough.
Dell inspiron, hers, for lpg set up and basic code reading with some live data on omega and polo via vag.com
So could just use her lappy for the car stuff, which is not that often tbh.
Which leaves my own personal use. And what really really gets on my nips with windows is the hang time and start up time. Click, hour glass.................wait............hour glass goes, click........ no response......wait..........wait.........still no response ,click, nothing, ckick again FFS COME OOOOOOON. 10mins later 5 internet explorers open up. Useless pile of crap.
I want something that "just works" as was discussed with Tunnie and TB at Ashridge. Ipad reviews all serm to mention start up being similar to a light switch. ON, google, search, found it, job done.
-
But then there's the price. Could well have a decent laptop fit the price of a basic ipad, which start at £400 afaik? :-/

True, but the iPhone does all of that, and its truly portable, can fit it in your pocket and surf and OOF, i think it would have to be iPhone and a Netbook / Laptop

Well Ive always been a Mac user from 1987... yes they even made them then.
I have had a lot of feed back from other apple users who did get the IPAD, however they prefer the Iphone and have sold the ipads.
I must admit, I use a macbook, its brill, quick , reliable and is fantastic for an idiot like me... I just cant use computers... thank goodness for macs... Im an idiot and can use one !! ;D ;D ;D :D :D :D :y :y

yep - the beauty of macs is you dont have to know or care how they work - they just do :y

havent used an ipad, not a fan. i was looking for a laptop a bit back for its portability, but realised i wouldnt need half of the stuff on it since there's nothing wrong with my £500 desktop computer itself, so i was using my phone (nokia N97) for short-time browsing stuff when the computer isnt on, but the phone has a piddly screen and a slow as hell processor
today i picked up an Asus EeePC 1005p netbook with a 250gb hard drive, 1,66ghz processor and 1gb RAM, brand new for £200
havent used it yet, still on its first charge :D

It has to be said, for an (almost) instant-on solution for mail and web surfing that "Just works" a netbook running Ubuntu Netbook Edition comes pretty close, IMHO.
It suspends and hibernates easily and even comes out of hibernation reliably, finds the WLAN and carries on as before. Something I've never managed to get a Windows machine to do. Boot time is perhaps a little long, but with hibernation working it's not a problem.
It runs pretty snappily on a little Atom machine. Would probably struggle with the higher quality flash videos but it does fine for idle surfing.
Install was totally painless with no Linux guru knowledge required and it happily installs updates as required without breaking.
It's a PC so you can always have a dual boot capability if you want to drop into windows to do code reading or LPG setup.
I don't think you could do better for your money than to get a £200 netbook and chuck it on.
At least by buying PC hardware you have options. If you buy an iPad and it turns out to be an expensive gay paperweight there's not much you can do. ;)

I know this sounds like I'm a dinosaur, but I really do prefer desktops. OK, I accept that laptops are great if you're on the move all the time but, that aside, you can't beat a good desktop, IMHO.
I had a mobo failure the other week and was up and running in three hours...that simply wouldn't be the case with a laptop.
I upgraded my screen to a 24" 180p. Not possible with a laptop.
My daughter wants a laptop, but she's going to get a networked desktop...I can keep any eye on it and it's less likely to get damaged.
So all these reasons apply equally to an iPad. I guess they would be good for reading books or surfing on a train etc., but I only have time to really get stuck into books when I'm on holiday by a pool or on the beach. I have enough trouble trying to read my phone screen in daylight...would an iPad suit my needs on the beach? I doubt it.
As I said earlier, I'm sure they're good if you're on the move a lot but, if you're not...stick with a desktop. ;)

Do agree with that, does allow failed parts to be changed easy. One of the problems with Macs is inability to put new parts (easily) in yourself. But build has improved massively over last decade.
I bought my Intel Chipped Mac Mini in 2006 while at Uni, i needed it as my assignments needed to be 'Mac Compatible'. It had a hard drive failure after 3 years but this was replaced under warrantly, apart from that its been faultless.
