Title: Looking for a Sat Nav, Still.
Post by: Peachy on 12 June 2010, 17:27:49
I am looking for a Sat Nav, as per title.
Can anyone tell what they now about the one on the link below? Is it worth getting one with the Traffic updates?
Is this overpriced? Can I hard wire this, i.e. wire it to cigarette lighter and hide cables away? Hate cables everywhere.
Thanks in Advance.

A mate has a Garmin in his Passat which also detects radar as well as serving as Sat Nav - will find out model and report back - I know he is very happy with it

tom tom
simple
reliable
why have anything else?

Why I like this is because it has Speed Camera alerts, it is 4.3 (I think) and Bluetooth Connectivity. Cannot seem to find a TomTom that does all that, unless OOF knows different.

Used one of those in Florida last year. Nice unit, easy to program, clear voice instructions, bluetooth clarity pretty good. Don`t think it`s hard-wireable, connection plug into unit similar to modern mobile phone plug. :y
Prefer to use one of these rather than the suction mount

If it plugs into Car Cigarette lighter, cannot the plug be snipped off and wire to the rear of connections for lighter? If that makes sense ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Thereby, hiding away wires. :y :y :y :y

Ahh, I see what you mean now. Thought you were thinking of hard wiring directly from the unit. Yes, can`t see a problem doing it your way

Peachy regarding hard wiring , you will find that the cig lighter is actually a step down power supply which means you will need to take the cig adapter apart and wire direct to it .  I have done this and it pretty simple to do .I have seen units that are designed to be hard wired have a look on the auction site   ;)

Why hard wire it.  you are better off having the ability to fully remove ot from prying eyes and also the ability to trafer to other cars easier.

Speed camera's are only POI's that are updated and you set the level of warning you require distance wise.

Phil, I only want to wire the adaptor, not the console itself, I would still remove that from prying eyes, just I know that I would not keep it charged or lose the charger, so Hard wiring is the softest option for me.

I have tried them all on the Tom Tom is the best. I have spent the entire evening updating my 3 Tom Toms with the truck software. Do not buy anything else. You can get bluetoooth so you can use your phone on a Tom Tom. Anyone thats says use a different satnav has not used a Tom Tom to it's full. I do upwards of 80k miles per year and my satnavs get me where i want to go without fail.

Just my opinion but after 80k miles per year i think you can rely on my judgement.

i've got a tom tom and it sometimes takes ages to find satellites - i've never updated tho - maybe thats the problem, but once its working its very good - simple to use, clear to read and accurate speed camera warnings - should the need arise (!)  :y

I am looking at the TomTom 550 Live! there are a few on eGay, lowest price is £189ish, will see what happens in the next few day or so. Unless anyone knows where I can get this model for LESS. :D :D :D :D :D

I would stick with buying from a retailer, then if there are any warranty issues you should have less hassle.

To Be Honest Phil, I was thinking along those lines, but most of this particular model on the Gay site are retailers. So may well be ok on that score. :y :y :y
Just not ready to pay £200 for one right now, but I may have to as I am really desperate (and also need a Sat Nav) and need one ASAP, as work and miles are clocking up, so I can see me impulse buying again :'( :'( :'( :'(

Now that we will have to disagree on.

First, nothing touches a proper, built in satnav system. Even a really old CARiN as fitted to 1998 will outperform any portable unit for locational accuracy.

But forgetting built in systems, most dedicated units will outperfrom most phone based units - most dedicated units will use SSIII receivers or better, unlike the poor receivers fitted to phones (which need AGPS to get them started!). Also, screen size and volume can be an issue for most phones. Nokia in particular also have poor software, and non touchscreen models are too fiddly.

Peachy - whilst your idea is sound to hide wiring, be aware that scumbags will reconise the telltale 'circles' on the screen, and will smash a window to check in glovebox to see if its there.  Even if you mount it properly, they will reconise the mount, and again go for the glovebox...

I have a Navman S80, with West Europe Maps... However...

I personally won't recommend NavMan, the map on mine is at least 2 years out of date from when I bought it, the replacement map set is near £80, the womans voice is really irritating and the battery is very slow to charge, more often than not when the battery is low, the satnav keeps turning itself off when I am travelling (even when it is connected).  The traffic updates seem reasonable, but, I have known it not to reroute or warn when roads are shut...

From what I know about Tom Tom, you can get free daily map updates, so you won't be waiting around for the new updates to be released....  I am sure other members will be able to confirm...

Not exactly. Mapshare is not quite the same thing as updated maps, which cost

I also said if you look back that when I went to colect the car it was being loaded onto a low loader and sold to a Ford Delaer in Bournemouth I think it was. I was right pissed off, but he (salesman) said it was sold 15 minutes earlier by another salesman with doing correct paperwork or summat like that.

I had the same thing happen to us last year @ a Vx dealer with an Astra for my Son.  >:(

BTW, the top spec Mondy is a Titanium X Sport. Sat nav isnt standard.

They have just replaced the 2.2 TDCi (173Ps), with a new 2.0 TDci (160ps), and the petrol goes down from the 5 Cyl 225 BHP to a 4 cyl 203 BHP unit.

Both having considerably improved Co2 than the outgoing engines.
