Title: One for you railway enthusiasts
Post by: Nickbat on 24 June 2010, 10:06:03
This looks like a fun package, albeit a tad pricey:

http://www.fspilotshop.com/product_info.php?products_id=2425

Includes five accurate real-world routes: Bath-Templecombe, Oxford-Paddington, York-Newcastle...  :y

Separate link to the video on the product page:

You should have warned about the "anorak" level of that site !
Have you looked at the specials  :o - you have got to be really into your sims for that sort of commitment

That is awesome and at the same time tragic (that someone has the time and focus to produce it). :)

The whole point of simulators, IMHO, is to be able to crash things spectacularly without getting hurt. I used to spend hours on flight simulator when I was a kid - mostly trying to hit the office blocks with the greatest possible air speed. Never dreamt that it would be done in real life. :(

Now, canal boats ? Not sure I like that idea. How spectacularly can you crash one of those? ;)

Oil tankers, perhaps. Trains, certainly. :y

I used to watch a German satellite channel, Hessan-Rudfunk as they broadcast images - when normal television programming ended for the evening - of journeys on the German rail network taken from the driver’s perspective.

I found this to be compelling and strangely therapeutic. :y

I never thought of trying to crash a canal boat...........but down on the harbour a slow collision generally makes for a lot of excitment (much screaming and shouting) then out with the hooks to fend the other boat away before a dull thud......................then silence.........................then more loud shouting :)

all happening at 4 knots :)

Mass, even at relatively slow speeds can lead to a 'tightener' as it's known in the trade;

On the other hand, little mass at high speeds can provide a similar experience.

(Wouldn't embed, sadly) :(

"TIGHTENER"

is that the technical word for "a severe clenching of the buttocks" ::)

Back in the early 70s I was 'doing' the Avon Ring in a 1-berth long boat.

When it was my turn to cook the evening meal, I had a large pot of vegetables on the boil 'down below'.  It had taken absolutely AGEs to get it boiling and, unbeknown to me, a mate had given the helm to his g/f to take us into a lock!  Need I say more?

Yes the veggies took on a life of their own and boiling water was going everywhere!

Needless to say, there were hoots of laughter from upstairs, and my negative attitude was a mystery to all! ;D

Talk about slow-motion!
