Title: Air compressor
Post by: Jimbob on 24 June 2010, 09:13:48
Been offered a 2hp, 25 litre, 8 bar air compressor, with a selection of small tools.

Sort of thing that goes for about £100 new....

worth having, or too small to be useful.

Wanting it for air dusting, tyre inflating, and to drive an air ratchet.

any ideas on 2nd hand price?  its as new.

Sounds like it will do what you need. Constant use of an air ratchet will probably get it wheezing but occasional use will be fine.

I'm with Richie price-wise. Depends on the tools though.

its the pack of tools that come with em, or sell for about £15 seperately.

was thinking the 30-40 range myself....If I was choosing, I would prob be going 1 model up to the 50 litre tank, but suspect this will do the job,

gone for it, £40, its a starting point to see if I find good use for it etc should I want to upgrade in the future.

Capacity is bigger than mine, which does all your asking. It was 70 new, I looked at upgrading to something that would drive a windy gun properly, but for the use a windy gun would get it really wasn't worth the extra outlay.

Might let him push me past 50 sobs tbh.....?

Had a play with it tonight, impressed, inflates a tyre in no time, quieter than I expected too.

Have ordered a cheap air ratchet / impact wrench kit to see how well it works with those.

those cheap curly hoses kill airguns (need as big inner bore as poss)

I dont, but its not huge, little narrower than hosepipe.

I know its not gonna win any competitions, but seems an ok little unit

The windy guns need a good flow through the hose. Other tools will be fine.

Its a cheap little kit ive picked up, hope it works, no big loss if it doesnt (will always wait till I get a bigger compressor If I find this one useful)

According to the stats it can drive the windy tools, but on paper and practise are very different things  :y

Not doubting it can't - as long as it can provide the flow without having to stop to often.  Its the cheap hoses that can really restrict airflow from a capable compressor to a capable gun that can make a good setup unusable, if that makes sense?

ie, if its unsuccessful, before writing the entire compressor off, try a larger bore hose :y

ive no trouble getting a better hose, was thinking about an extension anyway...so could get large for 'local' use, then connect the smaller on the end for doing tyres further away etc  :y

Bear in mind that small compressors are normally far from continuously rated too, so not only will you have to wait for it to build up pressure in between uses, you do need to ensure the motor gets some rest time as well. Generally, if you can smell the varnish from the motor windings, it's time for a cuppa. :o

Then again, I've got a similar sized compressor and the only thing it seriously baulked at was trying to spray my shed with wood preserver using a paint spray gun, and that turned out to be a spectacularly bad idea anyway. ::)  :-[
