Post by: Lizzie_Zoom on 27 June 2010, 21:19:36
Anyone like me who loves heavy engineering there is a programme on BBC2 now showing how they build a nuclear submarine of the Astute class :y :y :y

Watch it Opti!! ::) ::) :D :D :D :D ;)

Certainly makes you proud to know that British engineering is still capable of building these very complex boats :y :y :y

Well the first of the Astute class, HMS Astute herself, was seen putting to sea :-* :-* :-* 8-)

After seeing some of how the wonderfully skilled workers of BAE Systems in Barrow, coupled to elsewhere, build these boats I just hope for their futures that all 7 of the class planned will be built.

To see such magnificent engineering in action showed how this country can still complete such projects, and we must never loose those skills.  Thank goodness BAE have an apprenticeship programme 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)

A great TV programme :y :y :y

I work for BAE - and occasionally on submarines.

seems that someone should tell the Government that we're here in the Land segmant, too 'cos they have this habit of buying foreign, now.

not quite so rosy here

Maybe, but they must be at the top of their trade with that type of specialist, high risk, welding on pressure hulls  8-) 8-) 8-)

Do you think they earn top dollar?  Does anyone on here know? :-/ :-/

 ;) ;)

Had to laught at the H&S side of the plant with the female apprentice electrician.

long hair not tied back or in a cap.
2 or 3 necklaces danling round her neck and possibly wearing earrings or studs.

In my day as an apprentice, cap had to be worn at all times in the factory.  hair (If long) allways had to be tied back/up to stop any form of accident in the workplace.

Jewlery was a no no in the work shop/area and even moreso for both if operaing a machine.

Overalls, studs could be undone within reason but not down to the waistband.

Dunno what my bosses would have thought about her low cut tshirt showing off her lady bits though.  ::)
