I remember similar events, witnessed as a child 8-) I recall these fires (fuelled by coke) being contained within large drum like devices bearing lots of ventilation holes. The heat output was quite impressive.
I also watched, fascinated, as the sentry prepared his regular cuppa by placing a mix of loose tea and sugar into a large can of water and suspending this over the inferno.
When the concoction reached the point of satisfaction to those eagerly waiting this strong liquid was dispensed into tin mugs, milk added and imbibed with relish.
I also remember the acrid odour given off by the coke as it burned and the little paraffin fuelled warning lanterns with the curled arms dotted around the work site as a warning to the unwary.
Of course, by the time dawn's early light graced the scene the magnificent fire was subdued and tamed by hours of neglect as the sentry was invariably found in a state of blissful somnolence by us children (who were early risers), propped at an odd angle within his temporary shelter.

Ew! I'd save that for burgers, personally. ;D

;D ;D ;D I suppose the chunky bits would spoil the cuppa - even thinking about it makes me want to heave (http://planetsmilies.net/vomit-smiley-7502.gif) (http://planetsmilies.net)

That reminds me Debs of the night watchmen who used to man roadworks through the night with their little shelters and the wonderful brazier throwing out a lovely feeling of comfort and warmth as you walked past.
These watchmen used to man these sites even in side roads keeping the paraffin red lights burning and the site safe 8-) 8-) 8-)
Just thinking about it makes me all nostalgic and warm again!! :-* :-* :-* ;)

nice to hear the job went well, paydays just round the corner.its so nice knowing you have money coming in again. ;)

Well i`ve done 2 days and i`m on nights tonight i think(gotta confirm it with control room at 12)..Yesterday was dead whilst the match was on except for the little sods who set fire to a derelict house on the opposite Bovis building site and we had 3 fir engines and a load of coppers there..... >:( And then last night just before i was due to finish work the control room rang and told me that they had to send the mobile guard to central Bham coz a distraught and drunken england fan had climbed a crane and was threating to jump... :o... So i got a couple of hours overtime outa of it... ::) ::)

Sh1t Bertie don't fall for the old free cuppa and bacon buttie distraction routine :o while your enjoying that half the building materials will be disappearing over the back fence ;)
-
Glad your'e enjoying it mate. As for the jumper, let him, leave him to it. Loser!!!! :y
-
I dont have to worry too much about building materials getting nicked as the workers seem to all have nice big transit style vans to take work home with them.... ;D ;D
