Title: LPGA Certificate
Post by: PhilRich on 05 July 2010, 22:55:16
Now i've got the car running on LPG I need to get it inspected & certified fit to get my LPGA certificate before I notify DVLA & my Insurance Company.
I've found 3 Companies within a 70 mile radius of me. One, near Thirsk told me point blank they wouldn't touch it because they hadn't installed the system! >:(
Another couldn't be reached on their works number as it is no longer connected, but got through on a mobile number. The guy said 'yes sure i'll inspect it, no need to come here, i will come to you & inspect it outside your house, it will only take 15 minutes & will be £100 for cash!!!!! :o' :-? I said I would ring back & then checked on the LPGA website, his company was not listed as approved, even though his website says he is! I don't think I will be calling him again!! ::)
The third Company near Durham is approved & the guy on the 'phone sounded like he knows what he's talking about. The Inspection will take at least 90 minutes, & he told me to check there were no leaks or deficiencies before bringing it in as if he fails it, there will be another Inspection fee to pay after any remedial work is done (sounds reasonable). The only downside is the cost...£100 + Vat!!!! :'(
Also, he said the LPGA is now rolling out a new certification system which started two weeks ago, which is similar to the MOT where all vehicles which pass are entered onto a National Computer Database which is available to all interested Agencies i.e: DVLA, Insurance Companies etc. This means that the paper certificate is not now issued! However, he said he would give me a copy of the Computer Data entry. Now this all sounds OK in principle, but how do I stand if the DVLA or my Insurers ask/insist on an original certificate? In my experience, any new system takes months to become fully operational or for all parties to begin using it?  Just my bloody luck to have been held up by gremlins & just missed the 'old' system! ::)

A "google" on - LPG Certification - finds absolutely no mention anywhere of such a scheme, and as the LPGA is a trade association it would have no force in law whatsoever.

Sounds like someone is waffling in order to extract cash .... :(

3 calls and 3 differant storys, and not one the same as my experience, that being, you wont get an lpga cert. unless they did the unstal, but, they will and should issue a "safety cert." as proof the install is satisfactory, this is or was (?) the way it works.

But your right re insurance companys not knowing the system, mine, direct line at the time, where completely hopeless. Hours on the phone, but got there in the end, its just a dual fuel car at the end the day ffs.

Anyway hope helps.

should add, my local instaler charged £100, 1 hour to inspect fault and recomend corective action, and another hour to re inspect the once rectified at a later date. Might be worth a call to the lpga for advice and supply some feedback?

Problem is, the pile of bits in my garage is attracting higher priority. Especially as there's light at the end of the tunnel, and some summer left. 8-)

Been on the tellingbone to SAGA (well I am over a certain age ::)) & discussed the situation with a very nice lady about a third of my age ;) who after consulting with the Underwriting Dept. told me there was no problem & just to send in or fax a copy of the Compliance document from the LPGA approved Inspector. There is no extra premium, & the gas equipment is covered in the event of any claim, I only have to pay £10 for Admin Charges so a VERY good result and a big thumbs up to SAGA! ;D ;D ;D ;D :y

A lot of insurers are now much more relaxed... Swiftcover only stipulate that it must be "Professionally Installed".

When I questioned them on this I said it had been fitted by a mechanic (which I used to be ::)) and they said it was fine :y :y
