Title: Follow On......
Post by: Alison King on 07 July 2010, 15:30:52
I posted earlier about a new car for my daddy.
I have just added up the figures and it comes to £7,776.60, £49.85 x 156 weeks.
The car is for sale in the dealers for just a hundred or so quid less than 21k. How can they do this and pay for all the incidentals, i.e. Insurance, servicing, Tax, Tyres, etc.
Is he wise doing this as it will be his 1st Motability car?
Bearing in mind he is almost 73 years young.
Thanks

Because it is still their car after the lease period, in effect your Dad is only hiring the car for the term of the contract.

Still seems a good deal, this is his 1st ever diesel, and I did say to him he will see a lot of difference in his fuel costs, albeit he has only done 23k miles in last 5 years.
I think he may be OK but he may well be on a loser, any ideas ?

And motability would only be paying about 70% of the list price (if that)

As an example....the sort of discount you can get:

My partner got her 1st motability car just over 2 years ago. Best thing she did IMO. You have a brand new car every 3 years so reliability shouldn't be an issue and everything bar the petrol is included. :y

I looked it to this for my parents,I thought it was not the best choice for them with the very little millage they do,when i was reading the choice of cars (there was a great choice)the dearer ones want a down payment iirc of up to £2000.But its different horses for different courses. :y :y

He does have to pay £195 deposit when he collects the car.
Just been on DVLA website looking for a nice number for him, seen a nice one there for £399, see if my family will chip in towards it, but I somehow doubt it.

Have heard from a few people over the years that have been very happy, heard a couple of niggles though that may be worth checking out.  Insurance - when they have the car in for servicing, they check it over with a fine toothed comb for dents , marks and scratches, they do the work at the time as this is where they make some money out of the deal, something , but cant remember exactly what was about the excess on the insurance, if they do work every time it goes in you have to stump up the excess, they will not do all the jobs at the end of the 3 years.

They impose a maximum mileage per year - or used to at least, but tour Dad from what you may may well never exceed it.

Private plate, be carefull, you would need written permission of them to change it, and as it is never actually your car they may try to class the plate as thiers if ever thier was a situation with the car and it had to be replaced for example.

I know he is allowed 8 tyres during the 3 year period.
I think I may take your advice and forget about the number plate, may cause a few problems.
Thanks for the advice Sir/Madam, dunno which, seems I got it incorrect yesterday and was a laughing stock, but never mind is it.
Thanks

Motability is a not for profit charity effectively so its done at cost.

The old man does loads of Motability cars, and they certainly dont inspect body work etc for minor bumps

You couldn't be further from the truth Alison :( The remarks I made yesterday were directly to Zulu, and no more than a flippant aside, & they were certainly never intended to be taken in a personal or derogatory way. If I have offended you in any way, then please accept my SINCERE apologies. Kindest Regards, Phil. ;) :-[

Never been involved with it mark, I can only go by what people tell me. So then having heard something negative it's just a case of making people aware in case there may be some truth in it.

I know there are plenty that abuse the motability system.   :-/

Personally I think it's a cracking idea  :y

I dont think its so much the motability system, its the initial disability benefits allowance thats the issue because if you dont get that awarded then you are not intitled to spend that on Motability  :y

You are mistaken Scruntie, no problem with a private plate. Mileage is 20k a year so ample, I have done 38k in a Citroen C4 Grand picasso, sadly this goes back in 3 weeks.

I worked out that this has cost me £8.5k including the deposit, after 3 years I have nothing to show for it. Just had it fully serviced as I may extend the lease and was thinking about buying it but they want £9,300 for it and they will have only paid about £12k for it. Also I was told by a used car dealer who buys motability cars that he would only expect to pay about £6k for it and retail around £10500....... :)

He needs to be on the ball driving the auto version, not a true auto and can delay in pulling away quickly or when you put your foot down at a slow speed, you need to allow for this at roundabouts etc or keep the revs up a little to slip the clutch, as you would a manual and electronic changes can be slow. That said mine has been trouble free and I will be sad to see it go, expect high 40's mpg at lease, have had mine up to 60 on a steady run and mine is the bigger Grand Picasso.... :y

While my car was in for an MOT yesterday the garage loaned me a C3 Grande Picasso, very impressed, think they were trying to get me to get one, they know my plans, only real problem was they do not yet do an auto.... :(

By the the way it's not a deposit but a non refundable down payment.

True, I used the term deposit, but yep, you do not get it back, though I did so a previous car, or most of it anyway, sent the car back at 5 months old, not suitable for my needs..... :)
