I think this very good news indeed Nick considering the multi-cultural nature of our nation. :y

As a matter of fact Stoke-on-Trent City council should be congratulated on their thoroughness in this matter.

Schools are also directed to avoid swimming lessons because some parents and pupils consider the risk of swallowing water too great.

They should also cancel sex and relationship education because Muslims are expected to avoid sexual thoughts, discourse and relations while fasting.

This is very impressive stuff indeed. :y :y

Another hopeless case of the council employees, desperate to keep their jobs, coming up with daft policies just to make them appear busy.

Obviously, I think the newspaper has twisted this to be probably anti-muslim, but thats another debate, the issue here is the council....

Are they also banned from using the toilet, or washing their hands in case they are tempted by the water??

I can't believe any council would be so racist against any non-muslim citizens, that the media have cherry-picked certain comments.

Although I say the above with a hint of sarcasm, I suspect there is an element of truth as well...

As they say "The Devil finds work for idle hands".
Invent a department to do a non job and this is what results.
I'd imagine there are many of these people fighting to make themselves seem indispensable in the current economic situation.
I'd be expecting many more pointless dictats in the coming months.

You're probably knocking on the door there TB. : y - Throw in a generous amount of arse-covering and you can see where they're coming from.

It's a wonder that they're not offering the teats of the female employees for the great 'disadvantaged' to suckle upon.

who caress? What that report does not says what % of pupils are muslim. If its 70/80% then the Policy fits....

Unless, of course, your child is one of the 20-30% non-muslims and has their swimming cancelled.

Although I did not offer any comment at the start, I would nevertheless tend to think that this sort of action is counter-productive from the point of encouraging people to willingly accept multiculturalism. It is also manna for the BNP.

I must admit I fail to see the connection between fasting and swimming. OK, both involve water, or the lack of it, but you don't drink swimming pool water. Especially when a load of schoolkids are swimming in it. :-X

Surely the point of fasting is to deprive yourself of something, and to experience hunger / thirst for spiritual reasons? It's not done for the practical purpose of preventing the slightest drop of H2O passing your lips, so, if it accidentally does while swimming, what's the problem?

I had a similar discussion with (as it happens) a muslim colleague once who would avoid using any product containing alcohol. Surely the idea of depriving yourself of alcohol relates to drinking it and the after-effects, so why worry about a deodorant containing it? You're not likely to drink it, nor to absorb enough through your armpits for it to have any effect? I must be missing something. :-/

At any rate, if you are a minority group, being excluded from certain things is part of the deal. You exclude yourself voluntarily, you exercise your choice to do so, and, presumably, feel gratified for doing so. I don't see why the majority should pander to it, and thereby miss out. >:(

All muslims I have known would never want want their beliefs to affect the freedom of others anyway. That they would is just the presumption of those in non-jobs. >:(

especially when they could have all wee'd in it!!!
(remembers embarrassment years ago when the local council put a chemical in the water that went purple on contact with urine....my 6yo son stood there and shouted..."Dad, Dad, the water is turning purple here!!!"
We were asked to get out and change. I am still embarrassed, even now.)

We used to have a stream the other side of the fence to the swimming pool. We used to catch newts, sticklebacks, tadpoles, frogs, etc. and lob them over the fence into the swimming pool, then wait for the screams when they were spotted. ;D
