I reckon to ban those full face burkas etc are a breach of the womens human rights. I mean how are all the ugly women going to get to go into town now ??
-
I hope they've exempted full-face crash-hats. ;)

I can never get over the sight of a British-Asian woman (wearing a Burqa) daubing a placard before a protest march in 'our' Capital, with the unedifying slogan: "Behead the infidels!"
>:(.....I believe the term 'infidel' as used there, would apply to "the majority of British people" now, by the way!
Like it or not, there is a groundswell of anti-western feeling amongst many young immigrants from the Muslim countries....the French see it and want to do 'something'; perhaps it is time other European nations made assertions on which attire are worn for truly-religious reasons and which are simply worn as a statement of anti-western propaganda/alignment.

It annoys me everyday as I drive home through the centre of Bolton where it's comon place to see 'British Asian' women wearing a veil that covers all but their eyes! >:(
-
Don't get me wrong here, I respect the right to follow a religion and its practices/traditions, but doing numerous house calls in Birmingham, and having to make sure there is a man present at all times, and talking to a "slit" with eyes in it rather than a "person" is hard going at times, and to try to talk to them and find out information, to be told: "I cannot make any decision or opinion, you will have to wait until I consult XXXXXXX" sometimes makes me So annoyed!!
these poor women appear to have no opinion on anything, can take no decisions, and no real rights. I don't know all the facts, so I will not make an opinion, but are muslim women opressed by the male section of their community??
Taking the joking about "ugly women" aside, in the last bit of good weather, the poor ladies must be dripping with sweat inside the thick long black gowns, and with a thick headscarf and veil too...........I'm surprised they all don't faint away all the time.

In spite of the humour there is a very serious point here - is it acceptable for people to conceal themselves (and their immediate identity) in this fashion?
I don't think it is.
The growing use of this form of expression - however intended - can have a retrograde effect on community relations by creating an obvious statement by the wearer that they desire to separate themselves from the mainstream.
This frame of mind usually morphs into the desire to have separate arrangements made in all aspects of day to day life - different laws, schools, areas of residence and so on.
I don't think this can be allowed to become the norm, as indifference, carelessness and weak decision making generally results in many problems being ignored - only to rise and cause greater difficulty in the future.
-
Muslim women ARE oppressed by their "religion"... or how some of their "leaders" interpret it... and those leaders are ALL male of course.
Under Sharia law .. male enforced .. a womens evidence is only worth 1/4 of a mans ......
A woman can have no possesions, all she has belongs to her "husband"
The burhqa and shaib are not mentioned anywhere in the Quran, which simply states that a "woman should dress modestly" .. this has been twisted, by the "religous leaders" to enforce women to cover up.
The Quran also, by the way ... prohibits murder and terrorism ... and the modern "idea" of a "fatwah" allowing both is totally against what it says.
A "fatwah" is actually a religous pronouncement.. nothing more or less, and is not actually binding on any moslem.
A fatwa is issued by a recognized religious authority in Islam. But since there is no hierarchical priesthood or anything of the sort in Islam, a fatwa is not necessarily "binding" on the faithful. The people who pronounce these rulings are supposed to be knowledgable, and base their rulings in knowledge and wisdom. They need to supply the evidence from Islamic sources for their opinions, and it is not uncommon for scholars to come to different conclusions regarding the same issue.
Essentialy, it boils down to power ... the "religious leaders" enjoy exerting power over others .. and use any ruse they can to continue to do so. ... and women are an easy target.
In the course of my travels I have met, and made friends with, many moslems, most of whom have the brains to think for themselves and do NOT follow radical, militant factions.... unfortunately a very small, very vocal, minority have hijacked that religion in the public domain.

Talking of which, I just read in the paper that some councils are to suspend swimming lessons during Ramadan because the children might swallow water from the pool.
Gimme strength!

I couldn't agree with you more Z.
In parallel to the religious argument, we have scoundrels increasingly wanting to hide their persona despite being in public view, for obviously anti-social reasons.
VERY difficult to distinguish between the two.

There was a programme on Radio 4 on this very subject yesterday in which a muslim scholar professed that the Quoran does not say that women should cover up there heads/faces/etc. Bhurka apparently is the word for cover, and all the Quoran says should be covered are a man's and women's private parts....which are covered by modern clothing anyway.
The veil, bhurka, hijab, etc are simply a symbol of identity which has, over time, been adopted as the norm for muslims. Interestingly whilst recently in Morocco a lot of the older men and women there were upset at how the younger generations seem to be regressingly into such backward ways. Customs from which the elders had fought and managed to distance themselves from during their lifetime. So sad.
-
They only wear bhurkas so they dont have to shave every day. :o
-
I'm surprised they all don't faint away all the time.
My understanding is that bhurkas originated in the middle east and are ideal for hot weather - think Lawrence of Arabia attire

We only have ourselves to blame. We stood by and let laws be passed, many of them in Brussels, which allowed people the most outrageous privileges as a right, and which have gradually eroded our national identity.
It's not much good carping now. If we felt that strongly, we should have done something earlier, much earlier.
Tree huggers are only too ready to take to the streets to get their point across. We frown upon this and say 'It's not the British way'. Well, maybe it should have been........
-
There is a possibility that UK Human Rights legislation will get re-visited soon. :y

but these are supposed to be the same laws passed throughout Euro-land .... so why/how has Belguim banned full face veils 2 months ago? France is voting on the same thing today.

i don't agree with the pointless practise of ludicrous beliefs impinging on what the ruling leaders say you can or can't wear and we cant allow government to ban clothes - I agree with all of what Entwood says, but what about the devout muslim women who feel it is their right to wear it? arent we acting like some nutty religion too in that case? "no you cant/must wear it - its against the law/our made up beliefs
the whole thing is stupid and pointless - everyone wear what the hell you like, please its the 21st century.....next! 8-)

I'm in envy of your ability to simplify these matters BJ - why didn't I think of saying that?
If we permitted everyone to follow their inclinations the world would be a much better place without doubt.
