Title: Insurance renewal
Post by: steve_daly on 07 July 2010, 17:18:48
That time of year has come up and it's time for my insurance renewal. When I bought the Mig I had just over a month or so to run on my current policy so thought the price increase (I pay monthly) was just making up the difference and some added admin fee's etc.

Post arrived this morning and the price for the comming year from Tesco's is £494.55 fully comp.

I'm 41 this year and have 7 years NCB and to me, almost £500 seems a little steep :o

So naturally it got me wondering what other folks on here pay per year and who you are insured with. Sorry if it's been asked before, but I couldn't find anything :-[

Try Swiftcover.com they always seem to come up best for me, Im a lot older than you, but do have full NCB and no points.  £155 full com inc business cover.

I bounce between Admiral, elephant and Bell.  They're all part of the same group of companies and will price match between themselves.

It just so happens that I renewed today, cost me £420 for fully comp, guaranteed with two named drivers added, maximum NCB.  Just a shame that I wrote off my previous Omega last year otherwise it would have been £100 less  :P.

It's funny but considering it's just for social use and not buisiness/commuting or anything you would think that my 'employment details' wouldn't make a difference but they do.

If I tell them I'm a teacher it brings the cheapest quote down to £332.71 :D

It's such a rip off >:(

Dont ask me why but adding Business use to swiftcover makes it £10 cheaper for me.

You must change your insurance company every year. It's a pain but you will get a cheap quote every time as they are hoping to keep your business in later years, when they increase the premiums.

To be fair, Tesco's have remained consistently cheaper for me over the years than most others that's why I haven't changed for years.

I'm seriously thinking about becoming a teacher ::)

Due to the facts that I have an Irmscher Body kit, Towbar and LPG fitted, most "on-line" places reject me due to "modifications". Was with Elephant last year .. the premium this year was stupid, mainly due to them taking over 6 months to sort out a claim where the guy hit me ... funnily enough it was sorted one month after I left them .... in my favour.

So I've ended up with "Adrian Flux" .. and although I have not had to claim .. so far very impressed. Good price, better cover than Elephant.

Premium this year for Me & SWTSMBO - Age 58, Fully Comp, 11 years no claim ... £195

Always check with price comparison sites/Direct Line etc... Swiftcover were best for both our cars this year and it was the renewal price, not the new customer price! :y

Tesco's have insured our home for the last 5 years... Every renewal is high but a call and they will price match (or close enough not to bother changing) :y

As STMO123 says, it pays to shop around every year.
Last year my partners quote was £207 for fully comprehensive cover in her 3 litre Omega with all the protection you can think of. She is 36 years old and has a 19 year accident and conviction free driving record, and she has never claimed on any insurance policy in her entire life.
For some reason, this years renewal for her was just shy of £470.

When I queried the massive price hike, I was told that the reason for such a big increase was because other people were having accidents.
My response to that was "So let me get this straight, even though my partner has just accrued another year of accident free driving, her insurance has more than doubled in the space of a year because other people do not know how to drive?"
The answer I received was a plain yes  :o

Needless to say, her current insurers will not be getting our business next week when the insurance expires.

Was Adrian Flux that came up with £332. Swift cover and most of the other usual BIG names are within the same price bracket. I have been using the price comparision sites as I am far too lazy to hunt around myself...

Get a couple of quotes else where and then challemge tesco's price, just dont tell what you were quoted, coz if you were offered it £30 cheaper else where then tesco's only need knock off another £5 to beat them, where as not knowing the quote they may knock £50/75 or even more off.

Adrian Flux are dodgy - you have to watch their paperwork - they had to refund me when I challenged why the Norwich Union certificate did not match the cover they had sold me. Kept spinning tales until I threatened ombudsman action. Admiral is pretty good - £180 for Omega but a lot depends on mileage you do - just have 3000 miles pa for Omega these days. Signum is £350 with 15000 miles per annum.

I'm going to call Tesco's tomorrow and see what they say, as obviously it's just a system generated quote.

Tried Esure, they were over £600 but by no means the most expensive. The highest so far is £9,519.81 from Auto Direct :o That's a deposit of £1907.86 followed by ten resonable £873.80 monthly installments. They only want an extra £33 for leagal protection, bagain.

I think that alone goes to prove that the whole insurance thing is a complete lottery....

Gonna keep plugging on, got a few more that the comparison sites don't throw up.

Try poping into a local insurance shop where you live and see what they can offer.

Yes, because I have always opted for quality insurance so if anything goes wrong, as it did last year when that idiot ran into me, I get full cover and assistance, with AA legal backup and no hassle.  In all Optimist that gave me and my passengers effectively £4,200 + a quality loan car for 7 weeks, when all was taken into account 8-) 8-) 8-)

Try finding an old fashioned broker with an office, i've known my guy for years and he knows exactly how to work the system. Last year I paid about 400 for bells and whistles cover, protected + full breakdown recovery etc etc.

This year it went to 450, tried a number of direct sites plus comparison and came up about 10 quid cheaper so just phoned my guy and said do it. 2 weeks later I get a modification note on my policy, it had dropped back to a tad over 400 again, he had found and applied a new discount they had running. Proof that experience pays.

I have found them ridiculously overpriced every time I have checked! Cheaper to insure the cars separately and "Mirror" the no claims onto the mini when it goes on the road (eventually ::))

Well, with all my ringing and online quoting I finally got a renewal price of £375.90 fully comp :y

That's still with Tesco Insurance. I used their website to get a quote which included an online discount etc then rang them and they beat their own price ;D
