Title: Games consoles
Post by: Alison King on 14 July 2010, 16:13:42
What is it with kids?
My 11 year old son has a PS3 after smashing his PS2, albeit in an accident, he was carrying it down the stairs and he fell and dropped it, at least he only grazed himself.
Now he is pestering me to find him another PS2 as he hates the PS3.
He says he prefers the PS2, cannot think why? Any ideas, means nothing to me.
Are they still available to buy? I looked on eBay and seem cheap enough but I am weary of buying there as they may be busted etc etc.
All ideas considered folks.

I have an Xbox so don't know anything about Playstations but would have though your little'n would prefer a PS3 :-?
I am sure you can play new games on a PS3 but not on a PS2. Like you say though you can get them cheaply now :y

Thats a very odd thing as most kids always want and love the latest gaming machines! Maybe he finds the newer games too difficult to play maybe? graphics n gameplay have come on so much.

As regards to a PS2 they are cheap enough to buy but i would keep the PS3 in case he changes his mind later!

I will keep it, but he says he is fed up of losing or summat, I know nothing of these items, apart that they cost a fortune for the games.

Only the first generation of PS3's played PS2 games, and then it was only a few of them would work, other didn't run properly etc etc. Some of the early PS3's had a hardware emulator, others used software, and then Sony scrapped it all together :o

So if it's not a very early PS3 there is no backwards compatibility.

My young stepson tells me only EARLY PS3's ever played some PS2 games, all the newer ones (including his) only play the new games, and all the 50 or 60 old PS2 games he has are useless now to him.

He has put them all on ebay now, and is totally gutted cos some of the games (duke nukem, etc) are brilliant!!

I don't have many games as I too prefer PC gaming, but you cannot fault the PS3 for what it does.

Indeed, as an all round media device it's cracking. Blu Ray is outstanding, media streaming, playing CD's. The sound quality from the Sony is awsome especially hooked up through the amp and speakers I have for my theatre set-up.

i used to be a PC gamer, hated consoles, but i got bored of the constant need to upgrade my PC specs. When the xbox became the cost of a graphics card i made the switch, least when i buy a game now, i don't have to spend 1hour tweaking the graphics

I know what you mean.

The last (and it will be the last) dedicated GFX card I bought for this PC was £300+ and that was at least 3 maybe 4 years ago now. I can no longer justify to the cost of upgrading to myself (or the Mrs.) so I will be doing more PS3 gaming as time goes by.

I still struggle to use a gaming pad over a mouse and keyboard though.

We have both a PS2 and a PS3 and the PS3 is just so much better.

What games do you have for him?

Do you have both Rachet & Clank games?

Do you have either Uncharted game?

I have to admit I am addicted to the Uncharted series, thought I would have a change from Uncharted 2 - started Uncharted again on Hard.

Gamestation do second hand PS2 Slim for £30 with warranty

Recently did the same myself, my 3 yr old wanted to play games with me, and all i had was stuff like Call Of Duty MW2 and GTA4 whcih were really far too realistic graphically for him to play.....

Sold the PS3 with games etc for just under £400, got him a PS2 with 38 games for £110, most of which are very playable, and he thinks its much better.....

Most PS2 games are less than a fiver in Gamestation so he gets more games most weekends

Me either!  I want it for one thing more than anything else.  Can you possibly guess what that might be?   :o

I'm offering no clues to the answer  >:(

The PS3 Does NOT play PS2 Games, unless you get the original 60 or 80 GB version, then there are compatibilty issues I have the original 40GB version which doesn't.

That said, when you play the PS3 , the likelihood is you won't go back to the PS2...  The other thing with the PS3, in order to get the best out of it, you do need a HDTV, it will play on CRT TV's, but, very noticibly inferior...

Oh, and ensure when PS3 is not in use it is properly switched off, they do get hot... (not sure about the new ones...

Mine cost me £8.20 the other week for a new PSU...  Took a good bit of sniping on fleabay for that one...

YLOD and RLOD are more common on the older consoles so I believe, but, for any of the other faults, the PS3 is actually very easy to work on as it is all very modular inside (just a PITA to open)...

I was gutted when mine died and trying to play my old PS2 literally made me feel sick, due to the poor movement (causes something like travel sickness)...

I prefer the older consoles, as I prefer the simpler 'fun' games.  Yes, I have seXbox 360s but they never plays games (simply used as MCE extenders).  I've refused offers of free gayStations (2 and 3) because I wouldn't use them.

Its this fun element why I tend to stick to Nintendo. The 'fun' games.  I simply don't have time any more to get immersed into those games that newer consoles run, and they are all a bit 'same-y'.  My intense gaming probably ended around the DOOMII/DN3D era on the PC.

Up until the Wii, probably my favourite ever console games was Super Mario World on the SNES.  The Wii, nowhere near as powerful as MS/Sony current offerings, goes back to those 'fun' days, but opening console games up to be more sociable with family/friends in the room.

Which reminds me, must sort out another Mario Kart evening.....

I suffer that with most games now, possibly part of reason I don't play any game for more than an hour or so....

Always been slightly susceptable. Always used to get travel sick in the back of dad's old Citroen DS Safari (lovely car, but always smelt of puke after I'd been in the back ;D).  But I rarely suffer from travel sickness now, occasionally if there is swell, can feel green on boats, but I am getting worse with CG content (games or films)
