Householders face a £300-a-year rise in their gas and electricity bills and significant cuts in how much energy they use if Britain is to "keep the lights on" and meet its climate change targets, the "Government" has said.

Huhne is an absolute brick.
Sorry for my misspelling. ;)

A proposed GCSE-style question for this joke government:
"If 2,850 wind turbines produce 0.0% of our energy requirements on windless days, how much energy would 44,000 wind turbines provide on windless days?
My blood's beginning to boil. >:( ;)

UMM......
and British Gas DOUBLED its profits last year..............
The "Great Britain" I once knew is going to hell in a tin cup.
-
It does seem that we are indeed in for a shock in the coming months of a Huhne led Energy and Climate Dept.
This insane preoccupation with turbines and alternative means will cost most people plenty as we will be the ones supporting the development of the technology, not those who seek to build, exploit and operate it.
As for energy security - will the capacity be there to meet the needs in five years?
-
Well at least nick cleggs mrs got a highly paid job in a company building these flaming turbines, coincidence? >:(

There is a simple answer to this one Nick ::)....44,000 divided by 2850.....gives you approx 15.4......so the answer is 15.4 X 0.0%.... :)...and that is not a lot... :P...Forrest Gump gave me the answer.... :)

This fatuous policy very much has the support of The Boy, who is seemingly happy to drive the entire population into fuel poverty.
:o
It's his pesky server hoovering up all the electrons. ;D

I wonder how long it will be before your electric contracts are based on a contracted max amount of kilowatts e.g. 5KW or 9Kw( Bit like internet bandwidth)? That would bring the UK into line with most other countries. It is nice but ludicrous that people can just switch on as much as they like when they like.
Not as far fetched as it might sound with most of the energy companies being owned by Foreign countries where that is standard practice!
PS an exception wouyld bve mnade of The Boys house on social needs grounds

That's much too elegant a tool V - here they prefer to use the cudgel of increased pricing instead (draws more in tax wise).
Either way it still amounts to rationing whatever way you look at it.

my electric went up from £6 a week to nearly £20 last week, somehow i switch the emersion heater on. if i never had to go in the loft i would never of noticed. :(

Huhne gets skewered in The Mail:
It is hard to recall any minister of the Crown in history who has seemed in practical terms more hopelessly unfitted to do his job than Mr Huhne.
Here is the man we all need to be capable of getting his head round a few very basic, practical realities, such as how much electricity does Britain require to keep its computer-dependent economy functioning, and what are the cheapest, most effective ways of supplying it.
Yet on every single count it seems he has not even got to square one in knowing how to do that job.
We all know the old phrase about the disaster supposed to follow when the lunatics are put in charge of the asylum.
There could be no better illustration of it than the decision to put Mr Huhne in charge of Britain's energy policy.

I love one of the comments beneath the article:
I wonder if Mr Huhne would like to be on a life support machine driven by a windmill?
Peerless! ;D ;D ;D

Given my irregular working hours & general disorganization i chose to have my gas/elec on pay & go. I have tried quarterly billing but they over estimate & it all get's too much to bother with. I know i'm on a higher tariff but it makes you watch what you use & no nasty bills through the door.
Also the other day i topped the gas up by £20, came home, stuck the key in the meter to find Scottish Power had given me £40 credit...yes i did check my reciept...£20!!!!! 8-)

Good move, but wait until Big Brother says he wants to take it away from you.
The rollout of an estimated 47 million smart meters to each of the UK's 26 million homes by 2020 is estimated at costing around £8bn.
Then, you'll have the same potential danger as the rest of us:
Smart meters pose hacker kill-switch risk, warn boffins.

It is indeed gratifying to see a millionaire - such as Mr Huhne - taking the time to keep us plebeians in check thereby ensuring that the arse isn't ripped out of energy use. Respect, govn'r. :y :y

Standard practice in other countries. When you sign up for any utilities you give permission for them to take what they want from your bank account. Can be very hairy when they make mistakes or you sell your house but the new owners neglect to take over the supply.

I've got solar!! :)

Im on key meters for both gas & electric, there is already an energy hike built into what you pay, with npower there is 4% on the gas & 8% on the electricity, they call it a"government enviromental contribution",(i believe other suppliers are doing the same) so if they are going to hike up the prices to cover this futile wind rubbish where is this money going that they are already taking? >:( >:(

I can't believe this government has decided that there is not enough money for new nuclear power stations :o :o
With the increased usage by consumers I cannot see any other method that is capable of producing enough power to meet the nations needs in the future.
I have a friend who live in Philadelphia for two years, due to the extremes in temperature (hot and cold) quite often the power grid collapsed and chaos ensued. I personally feel we are only 3-5 years from this point :'( :'(

But there's plenty of money for windmills. It's only nuclear they won't subsidise... 'cos Chris Buffhuhne doesn't like it.
Read this link. Mind the language, though!! (Actually DK gave up using bad language some months ago, but has reverted to it in this post as he's so incensed over this subject.) ;)
