Hi everyone, had an e mail from sky today stating that they would increase my DD by £1,from next month due to their increasing expences.
So I decided to phone them up and cancel,so guess what happened!,they gave me a discount of 25% for the next 12 months.
Now that was unexpected.
Alfie.

they have margins to work to, so anyone who has long-ish contract can ring up and blag a discount :y

There's been a lot of noise on the A/V forums concerning this increase, the change in the HD package charges and the forthcoming price increase at the end of the year when the VAT hike comes into force.
It seems that a lot of people are considering pulling the plug on the service or reducing their package commitment. Whether or not they follow through with the threat is yet to be seen.

Whats changing there.
I am also disapointed that we dont get Bravo HD. I watch TNA Wrestling which is now broadcast in HD, sadly the quality on SD is totally naff now. :-/

Presently the (per box) £10 monthly charge entitles the subscriber to receive all the non premium (movies, sports) HD channels.
From October the ability to view a channel in HD will be linked to the subscription package - so if a subscriber elects to have one package, say the style and culture pack, they will see the HD channels on that but not the others - as they presently do. This will still cost £10. Other packages can be added at any time (at extra cost).
It remains unclear how any additional/existing HD channels that are simulcast from free to view channels such as BBC1 HD, ITV HD, CH4 HD and so on will be charged for.
If you take the top tier subscriptions however it appears that there will be effectively no change, other than the 'normal' Autumn price rise.
-
I'm not sure how they are going to work it but Sky Sports 3D will be put into the package too

They cant help themselves can they.
£10 for the HD chennels is bad enough, but that now means they are taking channels off us, or are they, have I got that right or wrong.

In terms of HD viewing for the £10 subscription you will only be viewing HD on the subscription packages you actually pay for - or additional packages you elect (and pay) to receive.
If you don't pay for a particular package then you wouldn't be able to view either SD or HD content.
The loss comes into it where the subscriber has the HD subscription entitling him/her to view all the non premium HD output but takes only one package. All HD from the packages not subscribed to will be 'lost'
If the subscriber is within the minimum contract period at the time of change, and doesn’t take the full array of packages, they will have to contact Sky and ask them to leave the HD channels presently in the HD package line-up connected.
At the end of the contract period however should a subscriber wish to continue to receive all the HD output they’re getting up to that point (in the current HD package) then they will have to buy more packages.

At best then I drop the HD subscription as they dont offer enough value anyway.
At worst, I drop sky full stop. as they are taking the wee wee.
They get stupid in the ammount of money they pay for sports rights - ok I can see the need to charge an extra fee for sports, but not only that it is also partly passed on to all subscribers.
-
Seems rather nasty to me, if you just want the HD channels - tough.
However DSO terrestrial trannsmitters now doing HD, and with Freesat HD I think Sky need to play VERY carefully.

Alright for you to moan about Sky increases.
I am a treasurer of a Social Club which is in a Community Centre, and have been pressurised into getting Sky. A total joke !!!!! They supply on a Public viewing licence, and want £8640 per year from us. Bear in mind, our room is about 50' by 17' max and is open to members only.
Because the Centre has a rateable value of £15,000, they want us to pay on that rating, irrespective of our tiny part within.
So they can poke it where the sun don't shine :y :y
-
In theory it's a complete con :-X, why because currently in terms of movies I have seen them already, sports do not watch, all other channels are reapeats aswell :-X, so yes why pay 40 quid a month I ask myself when I even hardly watch Sky ::)
-
Why do you think I rate the Humax HDR so highly?
-
http://www.freesat.co.uk/index.php?page=whatson.Main
after film4 on the listings I have no interest.
But I watch bravo and discovery a lot which is where sky have a tight hold.
Not available on freesat.
I so wish some serious competition would come along and then I would love to see sky having to compete to survive.

Judging by this thread, Virgin Media will be getting my business instead of Sky, when I need to purchase my TV/phone/broadband deal in about 6 weeks.

They tried this with Sandhurst Sports Club and after a battle it was agreed that it should not be on whole building. Sports Club I think got a big refund

Long Story:
I got Sky a couple of weeks ago. They're coming tomorrow to take it all back and remove the dish. I was messed around with the installation date for TV, which they got wrong anyway and turned up two hours before they should have, and then proceeded to cover my TV, PS3, furniture and carpet in brick dust. They failed to mastik up the hole they drilled for the cable, so there's an open hole into the wall cavity now. The phone installation I had to spend 30 minutes on their Customer Service line (which is a premium cost call) only to find out that they'd failed to organise the line with BT, and they couldn't do anything till Tuesday, because Sky customer services don't work Mondays. They won't let you cancel over the phone - it has to be in writing - even though the brochure says you can contact them by phone to cancel. They failed to respond to the email sent to the address they gave me over the phone. They failed to respond to the email I sent via their website for over 48 hours. The Customer Services people can not, or will not, speak to the people in their own 'Cancellation' department, and you can't speak to them because they don't deal with customers over the phone - only via email.
Short Story:
Sky = FAIL
Virgin Media = WIN
Virgin - rang me soon after receiving my cancellation letter, reduced my bill to undercut Sky, gave me a free HD Box, gave me more channels, were thoroughly pleasant when I called their freephone customer services number to activate the HD channels - got me back as a customer with the vow never to let Sky near my house again. And the TV pictures better too.
-
I wouldn't let a sky
Gibbon installer anywhere near my property. ;D

Good to hear someone got the better of them....I am hitting a brick wall so far >:(

Well, the guy from sky turned up to take it all away today. He moaned about not wanting to seal the hole in the wall up, saying that we'd have to get in touch with their office and log a complaint about damage to our property from the original installation. When we pointed out that it was him that installed the daft thing his attitude did a 180 and couldn't have been more obliging - even to the point of going to the local B&Q to get the necessary materials to make it all right again.
I agree with KW - they'll never step on my property again.
-
Put it this way, my Freesat cabling is a lot neater than next doors Sky cabling

The trouble with these companies is that their existing customers get shafted while the new ones get the deals.
I've just signed up for sky, I've got a better deal than my mate who has only had it 3 months, I hope I'm treated better than you were :o
-
We dropped sky some months ago, they did not try to stop me ::) ::) freeview and now freesat, we are not serious viewers just find the choice of nothing to watch a little smaller, save £42 per month...... :y
-
Just received my magazines from Sky. They are going to increase my Sky World Package by £2.50 per month.
I called Sky and mentioned the lack of deals for existing customers and the fact Virgin are cabled through my street.
I was promptly offered a 25% discount for 12 months. That is good enough for me. :y :y :y
