Title: XBox advertised on TV
Post by: Mr Skrunts on 31 July 2010, 12:27:12
Apart from a black case and 250GB hard drive has anything else changed.

And it is ready for the new Kinect system that turns you into a controller.

There are but 3 reasons why you re-design something

Market trends
Obsolesecence
Cost.

I suspect its for 1 and 3 above.....

I guess also:

4) to overcome the RROD damage that has plaugued the machine, even though the 'Jaspers' pretty much solved it anyway.  But by making it appear a 'new' design, it should loose some of that historic baggage.

But cost is probably primary, as they need to reduce prices to restimulate interest after Nintendo have wiped the floor with the lower specced Wii.

Sony can command a higher price for their (equally bad) gayStation, partly because Sony consumers are like BMW consumers (as in loyalty, not willing to see beyond their preferred brand), and partly because everyone loves to hate Microsoft.  Also, gayStation can do BluGay (and is the only BluGay player worth buying as Sony keep changing the bloody spec!!)

I am tempted to get a new slim one, as they are supposed to be virtually silent at idle, and have WiFi.

Seeing as I only uses Xboxes as MCE extenders, these are vast improvements to me...

Rather jaded comments there.

I don't see any negatives in owning a PS3.

If you don't like it don't buy one, but I really fail to see why you would call it gay?

That's interesting (having two MCE Artisan/Scaleo boxes) how involved is it?

You connect the 360 onto your network, authorise it with the MCE and away you go, watch live and recorded tv and any other media the MCE can play on your 360.

PS3 controllers are appalling, i can play COD MW2 or GTA4 all day long without issues, big comfy controllers easy to aim. PS3 ones are too small and i find my thumbs hurt after just a short while.

PS3 is over priced, i don't need blue-ray (never will) its just as un-reliable  as xBox, the press just hate Microsoft so its issues are well published.

Current prices, PS3 is £250, regular Xbox is just £100, the slim is just £180

Aah, that seems to be very straight forward Capt. :y  I can see immediately where that would help me.

Having zero knowledge of games and the machines they're played on can I assume that this arrangement would work with previous models of the Xbox?

You can even buy infra red remotes to operate the xbox when it's being an extender if you prefer it to using a controller.

Well you having big hands is not a Sony problem is it?

Take off the price of a buget Bluray player and the actual price of the consoles are the same. Again not Sony's fault you don't want one.

I don't know of anyone with reliability issues, PS3 or Xbox. No different than any other product. Some people have problems others don't.

Depending on what you want, I guess both consoles suit any number of consumers. But to say it's crap because I don't like this or that bit is stupid.

We have both in the house BTW, plus two Wii's. I didn't buy it because I'm a brand buying sheep, I bought it because it does what it does, and as stated before, I don't have to pay to play over the price of buying a game.

Wired Capt., as I took the oppurtunity to lay cat5 cable all over the house when I ripped up the floors to install hard wood.

We've got a Wii here as well  :y - Love bit of Mario Kart

But for a proper games console Sony is way over-priced, always has been, and its  reflected in sales, outselling PS3 by 10 million units per year. Also xbox is backwards compatible with old games (no chipping needed) unlike PS3.

Sony's online play while free, lacks decent numbers, a mate struggles with online games at certain times of the day, as most people just buy them for the blue-ray player.

Piece of cake then, you just need a 360 plugged into your telly in the remote location and plugged into the network.
IIRC the extenders bit of the MCE settings then walks you through the authorisation process and away you go.

Wired is much better  :y

Got Sky on my xbox (another advantage over PS3) and i stream movies and live TV over it, on WiFi it struggled (admit router is old) along with other traffic. But wired can stream movies no issue on my 8Mb connection  :y

May be worth picking up a cheap 360 on the bay and having a play about with it. Just ensure you get a HDMI model if your tv supports it.

If you're not going to be playing games HD size isn't an issue but I believe having a drive connected speeds up response slightly (stores some info rather than downloading it from MCE every time) and who knows you might decide to play a few games which is where the HD comes into it's own.
Copying a game to the HD makes it quieter, faster and saves wear on the dvd drive and disc.
But the HD are a clip on unit so can be added later or replaced with larger at a later date.

Thought the HD only stored game results or info, and you didnt play the game from the HD (other wise people would group  together and buy a disk  and all copy to thier HD)

Are you sating the HD (as in Hard drive) is not standard as you say it will cipp on afterwards.  Mentions 250GB Standard. or are you saying tou can add a 2nd one.

You can copy the game to the hd and run it from there, the flaw in your plan being the game disc must be in the drive whilst playing similar to a pc game where the game data is installed to your hd but needs to see the disc before it will play.
The arcade boxes don't come with the hd module the others come with varying sizes of drive from 20 to 250Gb which plug onto the side of the 360. The new slims use a different type of drive module which lives under a panel on the side of the box and uses a different type of housing and connection.
The new drives just look like a laptop sata connection whereas the older drives use a proprietory ms sata connection.
Whichever you have the 360 will only take one 360 drive at a time but you can now use usb sticks/external drives for playing media/storing game info.

I've got the 120Gb elite model downstairs which is great for gaming, if anything the 250 hd would allow me to have more games copied on the drive at once but it's hardly limiting.
Upstairs I have an arcade with a 20 Gb drive and remote control which is more than enough to run as just an MCE extender.
The drive size is less of a factor for an extender as media is played from the main MCE box.

I suspect Item 4 will actualy be cost to.

I suspect they have done a die shrick on the silicon to save costs (more chips per wafer). This should reduce power usegae and would require new lower voltage core supplies (hence new psu).

Lower power should make them run cooler and hence a slimmer heat management solution cna be used....they may have improved the mechanics which might help the RROD but, the heatsinks should be lighter anyway as a result of the cost reduction.

Damn site quieter than the old 1 gig athlon box I had running before it.
Mind youI'm a bit deaf these days but it's not annoying when in use, can't hear it over the tv tbh.

Plus the 360 is only running when you're watching/listening to media. All recording is done on the MCE itself then streamed to the box when you're watching it.

Rather jaded comments there.

I don't see any negatives in owning a PS3.

  • Great, updatable Bluray player
  • Same games you get on the Xbox
[/highlight]
  • Free online gaming (unlike the Xbox)

If you don't like it don't buy one, but I really fail to see why you would call it gay?

As i recall ps3 have a similar rrod as xbox not all xbox games are availible to ps3 and vice versa

some expansion packs for certain games come out on xbox before ps3 several months in some cases

Xbox has a better online gaming than the ps3 in my opinion I have owned both and prefer the xbox os much that we have 4 in the house 1 for me and the wife and 3 for the kids

BUT at the end of the day you pays your money and takes your choice personal preference will always guide you to what you buy

they have solved the rrod on the jasper console by making the heatsinks 40% bigger and redirecting the exhaust heat fans and extraction plus they run cooler due to not putting the graphics chip and processor chip next to each other

RROD is a non issue nowadays really, they've covered it by extending the warranty on red ringing and E74 to three years. Shame sony couldn't do the same on their consoles.

Only the PS3 can play GOTY 2009 :y :y
I'm not even gonna bother working out what that is. It sounds every bit as gay as the gayStation it runs on...

Simply because Sony are the scum of the earth, and know people will always buy their junk.  Much like modern BMW really ;D

If you want BluGay, PS3 is the only real option, as other BluGay manufacturers are, even now, struggling with constant updates that Sony insist on.

Read the Wiki.... various sites / magazines give GOTY, above is just Game Spy's opinion (which i agree with!) Uncharted got the most there for over-all winner  :y
