I've heard that if you slip the guys behind the counter a bit of cash at USA car hire companies that you can often swing a "upgrade".
My question is has anyone tried it, does it work and how much is "a bit of cash" on these occasions ?

youve got to ask yourself how much would you risk a bollocking for or even dismissal,if i knew i could get away with it id want at least a meal out for me the the wife and kids

Thats 10 bucks at McDonalds then ?

I'd suggest you have heard wrong. The likes of Avis, Hertz, Dollar etc have so many staff in their offices, it would be impossible to 'bribe'.
I generally ask politely if they have anything available at no extra cost. It's rare I end up with the same 'class' of car that I booked..... then again, I always book something 'half decent' anyways.

In the US I have always obtained an up grade without even asking! 8-) 8-) :y

Last time I was in Florida, went to the rental building at sanford airport where I was asked if I wanted an upgrade to a Saturn Vue V6 (basically a Vauxhall Antara) for free - had booked a small family hatchback.
Well chuffed and loved driving the Vue for 2 weeks.
Got my card statement later and was charged $210 for the 'free' upgrade, so rang Mastercard, told them, they took it off after seeing a copy of the agreement (the one I was emailed) showing a 'small family hatchback' I had booked.
Result!
Really can't remember the company, but Dollar rings a bell.
