Title: printer ink-the thieving idiots
Post by: redelitev6 on 05 August 2010, 17:36:38
 >:( been having a bit of trouble with my printer ,put it down to the fact that it hadn't been used for ages,so i thought the ink cartridges may have become clogged up,in my "enthusiasm" to unblock the cartridge i put a hole in the bottom of it,no ink running out so i assumed it was empty,"took" the top off to have a look inside only to find a FOAM SPONGE that had been soaked in ink,be lucky to have a tea spoon of ink in a cartridge, not bad for £25!!, how much profit are these sods making out of us? >:( >:(

Equivalent cost of a gallon of ink is.....£5,200, which I understand is greater than the cost of a gallon of human blood.

Yep, it's a racket. >:( >:(

Now you know why printers are so cheap to buy. ;)

I`ve got to the stage of simply chucking printers away when they run out of ink....I usually can find a replacement 'of some sort' for half the cost of a couple of new carts.......I know it`s madness, but consumer electronics is a mad world. :'(

There are bargains:
Presently running an H.P all in one (printer/scanner/copier); bought online recently for £18.....which included two ink carts. a ream of paper and free delivery. :y

Epson are getting nothing from me. I use one of these:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continuous_ink_system

First fill lasted about 2 years including plenty of photo printing. Can't remember what it costs to refill, but it's peanuts.

Another idea is if you do mostly b&w printing then get a cheap samsung laser printer. They come with a trial cartridge that you can then get refilled for peanuts.

Alternatively I've stuck with Epson because you can get replacement inks really cheap (with no faffing). Like so:-

Yep, i've been running a CIS for over 6 years now, firstly on my R300 (best printer i'd EVER owned!) & now on my R360. I couldn't afford to refill it with even cheapo cartridges given the amount of photoprinting I do. Buy ink in bulk & save an absolute fortune! ;D :y

Nope, that is for generic cartridges to fit the printer. Depends on how much printing you do.

The amount of ink is always stated. HP, for eg, are 15ml or 25ml normally.

If you don't like it, there is plenty of consumer choice ;)

For info, a general rule of thumb is the cheaper the printer, the more expensive the ink.  Also remember than consumer printers are sold at a loss (in a similar way to games consoles etc), with the ink (or games in case of consoles) being the money maker.

R300 is what I have. Gets grumpy if left for a few weeks without printing but it was as bad if not worse on gen. ink.

I mostly use a laser, but have an Epson PX700W for colour stuff. Doesn't get used much, but rarely gives ink trouble. Nor did the HP 895CXi I had.  The Epson R950 though, that was a sack of shite

My R300 always kept blocking up on the light magenta print head but judicious use of isopropylene injected with a syringe always fettled it. What finally killed it was a power surge  :(

Had a rep. from Epson bring their latest and greatest to the local photographic club of which I'm a member.

Kept going on about how the world would end if you use non-gen ink in your printer. ::)

Half way through the second page it started bleating about low ink so he reaches for his duffel bag full of spares, lobs one in and it lunched the whole set of cartridges claiming they were "out of date". Wouldn't print a thing until he changed the lot. ;D

Nearly all my stuff is printed in black on the laser.

Occasionally want to print photos etc, so have an HP photosmart 7762 sat ready and waiting.

It behaves beautifully despite often going weeks / months without a print.

On my previous various Epson's its always been a hassle getting a decent print out till its cleaned several times and printed a few pics.

My next solution will be a colour laser, and will pay for proper printing as and when the laser isnt good enough.  (not often)

I do tend to stick to genuine cartridges, they have been good to me, and dont cost that much considering the use they get.  as always much cheaper online with a bit of shopping around.

All my document printing is done on an HP LaserJet 6P which has performed faultlessly since purchase.  Good economy from the toner jobs as well.

I have an cheapo HP OfficeJet I use for copying, colour printing and so on.  This isn't used much, but prints without hesitation on the original HP cartridges each time I ask it to.

just upgraded my home printer to a kodak wireless jobby, part of the reason was the cheaper inks, under 20 quid for both cartridges and good yield which helps when you have two kids printing a4 pictures on ordinary paper :-X

I think most printers have overcome the blocking due to lack of use issues now.

My brother just bought a colour LaserJet all-in-one device, and it actually works quite well.  Even photos are pretty reasonable on decent paper (but not as vibrant as modern inkjets on photoglossy).  I would highly recommend it, but he's been on phone to me all morning, as the thing won't fax ;D  (we think we've pinpointed to the phone cable)
