Title: Pakistan floods.

I find offensive humour extremely funny, even when the subject is me.

Obviously, real people are dying, real people are homeless, real people are in complete anguish, but a joke is a joke and had it been another nation, another disaster, another completely different circumstance, jokes would be manufactured to suit.

You arent actually laughing at the dead/dying/homeless/anguished people, you are laughing at some funny buggers quick wit.  :y

It's been reported over the years that finding the humorous side of anything pretty awful is a typically British thing & just our way of dealing with it. World wars, Princess Diana, our footy disgraces & any other unfortunate disaster. Laughter is the best medicine.
I think the pretentious office types would call it a coping mechanism??? ::)

yep plenty in circulation (few of them new of course, most did the rounds on previous disasters). Like many, I'm afraid that I too have the guilty secret at laughing at "sick" and definetly nonPC jokes. Great British humour or just our way at coping with the horrors that the world keeps throwing up ? I dont know. But I do know that I dont want to be branded insensible to the REAL victims of such tragedies . Because Im not. I can tell the difference between make-believe violence in movies and the real thing too and my enjoyment of the former in a film context doesnt make me want to go out and emulate it in the real world either.

LOL!  I love that little chestnut.

Still it's a point well made. I don't watch rallying then go out & try to emulate it in the real world...no really i don't. I hate the train of thought that something should be banned in case the weak of mind see it as reality.
Lock up or treat the weak of mind accordingly. Most folk can distinguish between reality & lala land!!!! ::)

yep, that's the first thing that occurs to me when watching the news of people dying - hmmmmm, how can I turn this into an unamusing text? peurile, sick and in my opinion I've never met anyone who finds this stuff amusing that isn't a knuckle dragging, f-wit :o

I'd be interested in knowing how old you are.  Some of us remember when 'the camera didn't lie' and suchlike.

Not only are modern kids brought up in an environment where the truth is concealed, but where there are large teams of people working on methods to conceal the truth even more.  I'm thinking of games programmers and VR-developers, but certain solicitors and barristers might well be on the list. ;)

'fraid that relates to my "oh shes eleven" post. See, I was right to get my coat !Seriously though, as Banjax said, it would never in a million years occur to me to think up  a sick joke on the back of any horror/tragic news story, and I have only ever been sickened/saddened/angered/horrified etc in my reactions to such news. HOWEVER, I still laugh at many of the "sick" jokes that follow. Go figure.. :-/Be interesting to see how many people on here would say that they too laughed at them . Maybe we should start an annonymous poll?

Still a joke is a joke if your offended by them then don't read them :y

how do you know its offence until you read it, exactly?

i think it takes a certain level of intelligence to find jokes about natural disasters funny, thankfully I'm above it - but whatever floats your little boat  :o

it's weird, but I find the people who take most offence at the slightest perceived insult or change to their way of life, the most sensitive and precious souls are the very same ones who cry foul when someone doesn't see the funny side of their childish humour.

the handy thing about idiots like you is, they easily give themselves away the minute they put pen to paper (or crayon to wall)

BJ i think you’re taking a strong view on people that find a joke funny at the end of the day every one is different and what you find funny other people wont necessarily find funny. I read some comments on here that make me very angry but I just let it go. There is no point insulting people because they laughed at a joke or disagreed with your opinion on something. Comedians make a living out of jokes, if there is a comedian that is to near the mark for you you don’t go to there show you don’t shoot the man.

time for a bit of chill/ "agree to disagree" methinks now. Our laughing at such "jokes" (and I stress that we are laughing at  the "joke" not at the actual event that spawned them) doesnt  make us crayon using idiots with our knuckles dragging on the floor as you would suggest Banjax (well, not all the time) and neither does it mean that we dont catergorize such a joke as "sick". Can understand how such reactions to said "jokes" could offend others however. Truce now? :y

I'm not saying people cant make jokes about it, I'm just saying I find people who laugh at it are morons. Surely I'm allowed to do that? I doubt anyone could possibly take offence  ::)

i thought we were pushing the boundaries here? 1000's dead - fair game but call someone an idiot and it's frowned upon?

i'm just fascinated by where the limits are - doesn't seem balanced if you ask me ::)

Im not worried at all by you calling someone an idiot if they deserve it but I find it very obtuse to start an argument over a joke that someone didn’t find funny. A joke is a joke and it wouldn’t be funny if it wasn’t aimed some where. Spitting the dummy out the pram over this matter in my opinion is childish. And categorising everyone that laughed a moron is just plain stupid and in writing that I think you knew what response you would get and wished for.

yeah, I do see that BJ, just thought we were getting a bit heated for a while there. For what its worth, my wife never finds these things funny and gives me the "look" if I repeat any in her presence (which I obviously try not to do !). Never a bad thing to have discussions on "tricky" topics like this though is it as it should generate a bit of thought and questioning on how we view various things. Guess the key thing is that most of us really do not intend to offend anyone which is surely a positive at least even if we have different views :y

I agree it is good to disagree some times ive had a couple on this forum before and they were both with tunnie but i must admit i read some of his post a laugh and i don’t dislike him for it and its only words punched into a keyboard and if we were standing face to face im sure we would still disagree but disagree with and pint in hand and have a laugh about it.

yes i find them funny. yes i think they are "sick". i tend to find them funny, not for the situation a person/people/things are/were/or will be in but because of the way the joke is said, its words used and the "imagine if..." factor about the joke. one of which i have heard i did find funny because i could "picture" the joke and it was an image that would probably look very similar to something else.... i think it awful what has happened and given the time and, without trying to sound selfish, if i didnt have my own life to worry about, i would be out there trying to help in what ever way i can. never the less, as said, a joke is a joke, its not meant as a way to cause offence or hurt, and if it did, then the person telling said joke does not mean it (name calling is the most common one... an example is my cousin who is in the navy, now you can see the stick he gets  :y :-? :-X ) but at the end of the day, as the old saying goes, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me"  :y
