Vice Grips though are what you really want - the Rolls Royce of vice/mole/etc grips, avaliable with straight or curved jaws.

I think that it was Vice Grips that invented the tool, rather like Bacho and the adjustable spanner.  I have several types of Vice Grip and has always been happy with them.

By far the best "mole grips" i have ever used are made by FACOM tools they have four jaw positions and can grip items upto 100mm, i will try and post the web address for primetools.co.uk and look for stock code XF501pb-3. Hope this is of some help. Cheers, Jez

Mine have no brand name and just say 'Made in Taiwan',  :-[ and I found them somewhere around 10 years ago  :y - I think they were under the floor mat of one of the company cars I used to drive, probably left there by a machanic working on the car at some point of time...

As for your question....

mole grips
lock jaw pliers
self-adjusting pliers
self-locking pliers or (just locking pliers)

Amazing how items are known differently in different enviroments.....

can you imagine my curiosity when being shown around my hotel room in Amsterdam when i was told the boiler was situated in the bathroom  ::) ....The Dutch often talk about a kettle as a boiler.... :-/

Oh and STMO123 no chance of £1 shop stuff - one doesnt do cheap tools  ;D
