Title: Leaving Forum
Post by: Goonybird on 04 September 2010, 20:47:26
As posted in gallery thread I have gone back to a Skoda after an enjoyable 18 months of my miggy.
Now, my point is I understand the reason behind not being able to advertise before making 250 posts, but I have barely managed 100 in the 18months.
I have had to list my car elsewhere  :( , and I will have to list other related Items elsewhere.
I am not allowed to mention anywhere on here, which to me disadvantages other forum members and not me as I will just sell through other channels, as against offering items at a reduced price to other Forum members.

I think the mods maybe need to review the posts required to clear selling. This is way higher than other forums I have been party to.

Anyway been fun.

Stef

You don`t need to have a problem or query relating to an Omega in order to post. I would have thought that if you had joined in the various discussions/banter during your 18 month "membership" your post count would be far in excess of the 100 mark :-? Restrictions on the selling of cars/parts are in place for well documented reasons :P

I'd encourage a periodic review!  What seems to be a good idea at the drawing board stage, may not be the best when put into action. :y

Sad to see you go Stef - although there's no need to :y

As RobG said, had you joined in some of the varied discussions on here during your period of membership up to the moment, you would have had well in excess of the number of posts required.

Interesting point, but the post limit was decided it would benifit those that got involved and were regular posters, and lots of members just joined and started to welcome newbies just to get thier count up, that was then frowned upon after the 1st page as the newest members were just getting pushed down a page or 2.

Getting into some banter can easily add 20/25 posts a day, so 250 is easily achieveable.

I think this should be reviewed.....

I've got a low mileage 3.2 Elite which I am thinking of moving on at some point this year (no rush) just to get something a bit more reliable for the family, and keep up to date. It's the best car I've ever had and I would buy another like a shot, if I could get a newer one....

I'd like to offer others here the chance to buy it when the time comes as it is in good nick - I'd do a good deal for someone who is interested....

Now I don't get a lot of time to post on forums; I read this from time to time and have really appreciated the help I have got. 250 seems a bit high and could actually create more dross on the forum as I might feel inclined to post about nothing in particular to reach this number - not sure this is what you want....

I would have thought 50 or 100 would be a more reasonable number......?

BTW, this is not a masked attempt to sell the car; I may not move it on, haven't decided, just contemplating, so no mails about that please......

(but I'm 1 closer to 250 too....!)

The 250 posts is there for a good reason and its to protect our members.

We have run for some time with a lower limit for car sales but, its proven to be a real issue for the mods and an unwelcome overhead.

I have no say so anymore in this forum, but if I did the post count would be 100 not 250. I really cannot see the point in that at all.

Having said that, I have posted over 50 times in a day or so, so if I go mental this week I could list by teh weekend. That won't happen because I don't have an Omega now and never would again.

It is still a good forum though.

The for sale sections are not our primary focus. Its not realy part of the core of what OOF is about.  It is already very intensive of moderator time and effort.

Some people see OOF purely as a free way of shifting their cars/parts for free - sign up, sell, disappear (sometimes without sending parts out).

We need to put in some level of protection for our members, and our view is that 250 posts should be enough so that buyers can look at past posts and get a feel for the individual before sending money off to an Internet stranger. Personally, I'm not convinced that 250 is enough, and I feel we should only provide a place for free ads to those members that contribute back (not necessarily on technical subjects). But thats my own personal opinion, and doesn't necessarily match the Admin Team's view.

We initially thought that 50 posts would be OK for car sales, as buyers will view car, so less chance of seller doing a runner without suppling goods.  However, we have found time and time again, some idiot will post 50 pointless posts in a night, 51st being the ad for his car, before buggering off never to be seen again. So we lifted to 250, as its tedious work to undo the mess these idiots cause.

Being able to 'buy your way' into those sections is against the ethos of OOF, and has always been internally rejected every time we have discussed it.

My 2p's worth: This is the best (motor-based) forum I have come across. The mods go to incredible lengths to keep it going. It has worked really well for over four years now. I wish folk would accept the rules for what they are and stop trying to get them altered to suit their own ends.
250 posts is easily acheived by simply joining in for a few weeks and, TBH, I wouldn't 'trust' anyone to sell me a car without doing all the necessary checks, forum member or not.

Your point was spot on
250 is a good target I also think that all sellers should be required to provide contact details(name address and land line number in there profile) for the mods only incase things go pear shape.

Thanks for the replies.
I wasn;t crtiticising the decision of 250 posts just the consequences of it. Some forums have Mods approve ads before posting. Am more than happy to pay to list stuff on ebay. Just been easier, and probably more helpful to other OOF members if I could have offered items on here first.
This has to be the best car forum. Brisk*da is good but still a way to go in terms of specific support.
I have supported the OOF forum as much as possible, but I have other forums to visit, Mostly Diecast Models, Aviation, Radio, Photography related stuff which is why my post count is probably on the low side.
Won't leave it completely. I'll just pop-up from time to time.

Your point was spot on
250 is a good target I also think that all sellers should be required to provide contact details(name address and land line number in there profile) for the mods only incase things go pear shape.

Not a good idea on a public forum. :-/

plus HUGE data protection issues  :y

My 2p's worth: This is the best (motor-based) forum I have come across. The mods go to incredible lengths to keep it going. It has worked really well for over four years now. I wish folk would accept the rules for what they are and stop trying to get them altered to suit their own ends.
250 posts is easily acheived by simply joining in for a few weeks and, TBH, I wouldn't 'trust' anyone to sell me a car without doing all the necessary checks, forum member or not.

I think people expect too much. The mods are not here to hold your hand as you go through the buying process. We are all big boys now, and it's up to you to look after your own interests. Can you imagine all the legalities that would have to be considered? The mods would be acting as a kind of 'escrow'.
No. Buy a car, sell a car, but the responsibility is all yours, not the administators.
